OP, you want a very modern distro, because drivers are provided through the distro and not through nvidia/amd/whatever. So things like debian are shit, Ubuntu is okay. If you want something easy to use probably something like manjaro.

It really depends on your hardware, but don't expect a big difference between distributions.

Ubuntu (or whatever desktop environment derivative you want) 16.04 if you have a NVIDIA GPU
Ubuntu 15.10 or 16.04, if you have an AMD GPU. Some games do better with fglrx, some do better with amdgpu.
Ubuntu, Debian or Fedora + proprietary drivers + light graphical environment like Xfce, Lxde or openbox. If you're not familiar with linux I'd suggest Ubuntu + Xfce and default Steam installation + PlayOnLinux.
