Hello, just a question (well, two). I have here, an old laptop of mine that was bought in the age of Vista. So I just formatted and reinstalled the OS (I wanted a blank slate) but now I'm in the damnedest situation! Because Windows, for some absurd reason, refuses to install its updates. It's been stuck "looking" for them the whole day...Is it actually still possible to install Vista in AD 2016? Or should I somehow procure a key for a newer OS?
>>
install the gnu/linux operating system
>>
I wish, but I can't, I need videogames... :(
>>
>>54308399
Like games doesn't exist on Linux. Please. Most recent games have a Linux/Mac port and WINE does the trick
>>
>>54308296
Known issue with VistAIDS and 7. Need to manually install some patches first.
>>
i dont think vista actually recieves new updates anymore

but the old updates that vista needed since release should still be downloadable from the windows update program

i recently reinstalled a friend's pc and they insisted they keep the original vista key and all that and updating to new service packs and fixes wasnt a problem
>>
>>54308296
Vista is dropping support in early 2017 anyway. Your laptop is slow and old, there are like a billion patches. That's why it takes so long.

Just find and download, install Service Pack 1 and 2, rest should fix itself from there

https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=16468
32-bit

https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=17669
64-bit

I think you actually only need to install SP2 since it should include fixes from SP1 too BUT I CAN'T CONFIRM SOMEONE CORRECT ME ON THIS
>>
>>54308573
Ok I found out, SP1 is required before installing SP2 on Vista

https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=30
32-bit

https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=21299
64-bit

Install this first, then install >>54308573
Good luck
>>
>>54308573
I already installed a version with both SPa already included
>>54308543
which?
>>
>>54308669
Then chances are there simply arent' any more updates left to install if you can't find them or windows update isn't finding them

Microshaft stopped making updates for vista a good while back

you're done
>>
>>54308296
1. Download and install service pack 2 for vista
2. let windows update search for updates, it will take lika half a day the first time, this is normal.
>>
>>54308780
>Microshaft stopped making updates for vista a good while back
Wrong
>>54308546
>i dont think vista actually recieves new updates anymore
wrong
>>
Same for me. Fresh Windows 7 x64 install. Searched for 6 hours and found no updates. This is Microsoft way of trying to get people to ditch older version of Windows. Or make peoples systems vulnerable to get pwned so when they re-install or buy a new computer they get 10.
>>
>>54308786
theres an update for 7 at least that fixes this so it only takes a few minutes for the first search. not sure what its kb# is though.
>>
>>54308786
>half a
It took at least 12 hours up to now. And the laptop ISN't slow. It's a pretty good gaming laptop from a few years back. Used to run Crysis (2) and Total War...
>>
>>54308822
Still OP here. Yea, I'm starting to think to throw the towel and use it like this. But there's a catch! It seems, this useless "search" is quite taxing to the processor. The fans are always full force! And i cant install the .NET framework for some reason...
>>
>>54308296
Install gnu+linux
>Vista
>2016⅓
>>
>>54308905
B-but i want to play World of Tanks...
>>
There's this
https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/913086

And there's also this
https://www.microsoft.com/en-US/download/details.aspx?id=3132

Make sure to stop the wuauserv service in task manager before installing these
>>
>>54308953
Second link for vista:
https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=504
>>
>>54308953
Ok, let me understand it better: all I have to do is install: http://download.microsoft.com/download/0/6/A/06A9B448-12E3-4DC7-AA14-D3260574C2A0/Windows-KB913086-201604.iso
to have ALL the updates up to April 2016? Is it really THAT easy?
Also, I'm going to try the second one later. What does it do?
>>
>>54309007
The first one are just security updates, no normal ones
The second one is a pack that updates important things so that windows update can find updates faster (will stake some hours, but it will work)
>>
>>54308360
>installing a hacked server OS in a laptop
>>
>>54309032
so is the first one really needed, or do i just skip to the second stage?
>>
>>54309053
Just try both
>>
>>54309066
Ok. I'm starting now, hoping that it will finally work. In the meantime, thanks a lot in any case! You guys was really helpful indeed.
>>
>>54309066
one thing: it seems the security updates from the iso, don't install! They actually end up "searching for an update" too, whatever it means. I did stop the wuau service btw...I think i'll try the second step.
>>
>>54308525
real games don't. sure if you want to play old outdated shit games.
>>
>>54308296
why not install 7 on your laptop? it should run better than vista
>>
>>54309720
I don't want to spend money on something I will use only until my main laptop (that broke the other day) is finally replaced from Amazon. It sucks that my whole country is in holyday till tuesday... :(
>>
1.) Get a win7 iso from a digitalriver mirror
2.) Use wsusoffline updater to update it
3.) Profit??
>>
>>54309873
>digitalriver mirror
First question: is it legal?
Second one: will it actually make a difference? Some people here seem to tell me, W7 tends to have the same problem... (mmm, what if I update to W10? Will I be able to run it...)
>>
>>54309873
I forgot the part about using Windows Loader (Daz) to register it. Make sure you format the drive to MBR.
>>
>>54309942
wsusoffline updater fixes the updates. Yes the isos are legal. using windows loader is the illegal part but no one cares
>>
>>54308919
install XP then you JERK
i heard even win10 runs well on shitty computers nowadays so if you dont mind the spyware there's that
>>
>>54310026
Win7 is the only acceptable version of Windows period.
