I install os and software on it - I also keep small cache on it.
Big cache for software like adobe suite I keep on a hard disk - but with modern SSD's I would keep everything on them.
A friend of mine who has an 4 year old Samsung SSD has 100 tb written on it from adobe suite and has literally no problem with it.
Rule of thumb is usually get an Samsung.

Storage access has nothing to do with FPS. If you want higher FPS upgrade CPU and GPU.
What did change that you probably didn't pay attention to was load times. Try using a hard drive after using an SSD with games that have noticeable load times, you'll drive yourself nuts trying to downgrade.

My Arch Linux install is snappy as fuck works flawlessly. I'm really skeptical of how much performance gain I'd make. I don't think it'd even be noticeable to the human eye.
