So what laptop would be the best laptop for college below 1k?
>>
>>54300666
A T500 Satan
>>
Razer Stealth Blade, not even memen'
>>
>>54300666
what're you doing in school?
a STEM might need more hefty hardware, for example
>>
>>54300676
No idea if you're being serious but it's not within my budget :/
>>
>>54300711
I'm starting my first year this summer actually so it going to be basics, the first few classes will involve a lot of writing though
>>
>>54300715

The base model is $999.99 anon, and still better than most of the shit you see out there.

2k screen
8gb of ram
i7 6500u
SSD(128gb? In base model)
>>
>>54300750
something with an i5 or i7 (try to get HQ SKU not U if you can, but not a huge deal)
8+GB of RAM
1080p or better screen
battery life battery life battery life

now go use google and you should find 5 or so laptops in this spec
>>
nigga

pen and paper

>>54300666
Thinkpad x220 with a 850 EVO.
>>
XPS 13
>>
>>54300862
any laptop with a 850 EVO will be snappy enough for school use.
thinkpad is a good base though.
>>
asus zenbook ux305fa

don't spend the maximum of your budget and get some peripherals to have on a desk with it so as to save your back from it being fucked up while hunching over the laptop for hours
>>
>>54300870
Yeah but OP should also take in consideration a 2-1 tablet or a PC with an Atom CPU so he can have 8-10 hours bettery life unless he does something that needs a good CPU.

A college laptop sounds like a MS Office laptop for me.
>>
>>54300666

X200, X201, or X220 in good to perfect condition.

Get a new, genuine 9-cell (there are some great "ghost shift" bargains on ebay, mine was $40), and replace the HDD with a modern SSD.

Start using the laptop and your preferred OS at least a full month before you take it to school and start relying on it.

This will handle 5000% of your first-year needs. If and when you need a better laptop, like for CAD or some shit, go out and buy one, you'll make a much better decision then after observing what your T.A.s and professors actually use. Also talking to classmates/upperclassmen about what they like and do not like about their fuckhuge CAD/Facebook machines, 95% chance they will express regret that they bought some xxx_killerSpec_xxx machine with horrible creaking plastic and shitty build quality.
>>
2-in-1s are a fucking meme, nobody in the history of the world has EVER accomplished anything on a tablet. They just end up being worse laptops.

You won't remember anything from reading shit online, if you don't want to feed the book publishing jew then just torrent your books and print them out at a local print shop/kinkos etc if you can get a good price.

I'm not even a performance fag, but Atoms are sort of frustrating to use as a general purpose or only computer. You're honestly better off with a late model C2D.
>>
Don't really know anything about all the specs you guys mention but I appreciate the info & suggestions
Probably shouldn't get a Mac though right?
>>
I use an $80 craptop with a bay trail atom and just do all my compiling and shit remotely. Cheap laptop + nice desktop is best setup.
>>
>>54300666
$800 - Desktop PC
$200 - Chromeboook
>>
>>54301109

You've just TRIGGERED the resident trolls.

Macs are fine, you'll just end up paying the Apple tax, especially if you want something new. You'll end up paying $700+ for a laptop that won't be able to run CAD or specialized (horribly written, nonportable) engineering software. If you're going to buy something expensive like that, the thought goes that you might as well keep your options open.

If you're going to get a laptop that won't work for that stuff, you might as well just save your money and get a $200-$300 thinkpad that can at least run those programs, if slowly for stuff like CAD.

A mac is an okay choice if you're more likely to gravitate towards a *COUGH BULLSHIT COUGH* field where you'll be writing essays all day, or handwriting shit like a math degree. It's actually a good choice if you're going into music or the arts.

Just forget about the macbook air, fucking garbage, or the very latest oneport macbook. The 2012-2016 macbook pro line is where it's at if you go down that path.
>>
T420
>>
>>54301147
wtf? why would you pay 800 dollars for a goddamn desktop? he is going to school, not playing your fucking video games. shit you could build a powerful pc for way cheaper than fucking 800 dollars.

don't listen to this guy OP, he is retarded.
>>
>>54300666
Option 1: Spending all of the cash for best laptop - used rMBP from 2014 or even 2013. Air for maximum poorfaggotory and battery life.

Option 2: Spending minimal money for a "good enough" laptop - used X220 with SSD.

>>54300896
>Atom CPU
Absolute haram. Even basic shit is annoying as fuck with it.
>>
>>54301204
Well being able to run CAD programs only matters if you're going to be working as an engineer or work in construction. It would be important to know what he will be doing in college. And after college if you're going to be those types of jobs, they usually give you company computers regardless.
>>
>>54301204
What normal sized Thinkpad with respectable battery life can run CAD better than MBP?
>>
>>54301034
CAD laptops are not huge

You can get the m3800 with a quadro for less then a grand now. It was my old laptop and handled SW well.
>>
lenovo W560
>>
>having $1000 to spend as a college student
Have your daddy pick it out for you instead, considering it IS his money. Or use that money to pay off your 'murican school debt and buy something cheap like a chrome book considering that's all you fucking need.
>>
>>54301352

Please link to where I can find an m3800 for less than $1,000 burgers

Also OP already said that the Razer Blade Stealth (~$1,600) is out of his price range, so I'm assuming he's looking at more "reasonably" priced laptops.

OP: The main takeaway you should have is that build quality is important, don't blow your whole wad on some cool "spec monster" that has shitty, bendy plastic and a three-hour battery life.

Also don't get something you'll be embarrassed to take out in public, for me this included 2006-looking fat POS as well as xXx_Gaming_xXx laptops with red/green/blue edgelord keyboards
>>
>>54301257

Any of them?

I am under the (possibly mistaken) impression that major programs such as Solidworks and CATIA have absolutely no support for the OSX platform.

"but but but VMs/Parallels/Bootcamp"

I am also under the impression that these solutions are fine for CPU-based applications, but that graphics drivers are poor or nonexistent for macs running windows. Running CAD with software graphics on a thermally-limited system sounds like a fucking nightmare.
>>
>>54301416
My money actually but thanks for your input
>>
>>54301416
Where did OP say that he is an Americuck? Also what happened to having a job?

Just how bad do you have to be with money to care about $1000 in the first world?

PEN PAPER AND CALCULATOR
>>
>>54301491
I am under the impression that you can just use newer drivers with Bootcamp. Sometimes it's trickier than it should be but absolutely doable.

Also I am under the impression that OP didn't even say that he needs CAD.
>>
>>54301416
$1000 is way easy to save up for if you're not some impulse-buy cuck like you are
>>
>>54301496
>Daddy's gift money
FTFY
>>54301499
Majority of people are americucks on here, so I'm assuming. He's in college, unless his daddy is rich then he needs that money for more important things. His part time job isn't going to work too well paying his $800 rent, plus ramen and vidya.
>>
>>54300676
>Razer Stealth Blade
>IntelĀ® HD Graphics 520
lol.
>>
>>54301535

desktops are literally only for gaymers and professionals at this point.

OP is a first year student, he's not going to be running simulations or anything. Even if he's an engineer, the most "computationally intensive" stuff we did was 6x6 Ax=b shit that my TI-83 handled just fine, everything else will be the symbolic shit where a computer will only hurt his understanding of the material.

Depends, my friend made 1k in a week as intern. (She's mechanical engineer)
Although in Cali, so the rent is crazy too.
>>
>>54301658

>She

It's fucking disgusting how much easier the girls in our program have it when it comes to hiring
>>
I live at home with my dad, my part time job just pays for my phone, Netflix, Spotify, & car insurance.
He's paying for my classes that's it

All over ebay, i bought mine cert. refurb with 1 year on site warranty from Dell for $999 shipped. Here are 2 I quickly found.

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Touch-Dell-Precision-M3800-FHD-i7-4712HQ-500-GB-Nvidia-K1100M-16GB-1-Yr-Warranty-/282014877775?hash=item41a965884f:g:IWMAAOSw3ydVz94n

>>
>>54300715

Base Model is $999 and you'll get $100 off the Razer core which you could use to make it a gaming laptop in the future.
>>
>>54300666

not sure if you really need to spend the entire grand, if its just office and light gaming and this should be fine.

>>
>>54301748
Thank you but I'm not really interested in making it into a gaming laptop console fag :/
>>
>all these old thinkpad recommendations
jesus fucking christ can't you virgins stick to your containment thread?
OP you can get a decent ultrabook for that price. Check out some reviews on youtube.
>>
>>54301785

So then you still have the best laptop on the market under 1k i don't see the issue desu senpai

Also a laptop wouldn't be a console fag
>>
>>54301717
Take an internship every summer. Not kidding, pretty much a guaranteed job if you don't majorly fuck up
>>
>>54300666
OP if you don't need to do heavy computation just get an x220 with an SSD. the keyboard is honestly the best one ever designed
>>
>>54304115
i expressly got a x230 because the floppy old thinkpad style 220 is unusable.

don't get me wrong the common x or t series pads are great but that old keyboard style is fucking archaic and unusable. also at op if you're doing stem just get a *30 series thinkpad and max out the ram and put an ssd in it until you feel it isn't powerful enough.

If you're studying art or music, get an rmbp with the best specs you can afford.

cheers and good luck on your education.

Taking advantage of this thread.
What's the best 14" you can name in terms of display quality and battery life?
>>
>>54304808
honestly whatever 13" mbp before retina was common. the 2012 models were really solid and they're cheap used.
>>
>>54304825
maybe chase one of the t4*0 series with ips and a 9 cell or two if you want stallman 9 hour desert battery lives but for real a used mbp will probably be a better value.

I'd prefer to avoid any macbooks, forgot to mention it in my post but they retain value like motherfuckers where I live and I'm not the kind of guy to refresh his tech ever 2 years so I have no interest in that aspect, I'd just be pumping out money I don't expect to get back
>>
>>54304848
This.
Or a Dell Latitude.

External batteries are King if you need shitloads of battery life.
>>
>>54304861
i've had mbp's for over a decade in a couple cases and they're solid comps and run *nix.

>>54304873
latitudes are ok if you want sharper monitors. the stock dell monitors are a little prettier than thinkpads imo.
>>
>>54300666
Dell Inspiron 7559 if you're not carrying it around a lot, good cheap powerful all rounder.
The Razer if you need portability. Or the XPS 13/15, might be beyond your budget though. Dell do student deals I think.
