Sell it and buy a $130 refurb netbook with a bay trail atom and 2 GB RAM.

I run Universe@home, Seti@home, and a couple other distributed computing projects.

Uses my spare CPU cycles and all I pay is the ~$0.30 a day more I pay for electricity.

Do you like PS2 games?
Because you have a high end processor so software rendering and avx2 help you run basically any.
You can also load Ubuntu 14.04 LTS and play around with neural-style.
You can also design circuit boards and auto routing will just breeze by.
You can also fill it with virtual machines.
You can rice Linux and brag.
You can really just do a lot of creative shit instead of wasting time with video games.
You probably wont even have to upgrade till the next big change in computing architecture if you don't really play games.

Really OP, just use your fucking head, it shows with how you spend your money.
>>
>>54300073
Sound like you've just grown out of video games. Sell it and find a new hobby.
Also, please don't ever post again.

> Bu many never have seen games maxed out except briefly 5 years ago because they paid double what they needed for a CPU but got a mid tier GPU

Its what /g/ does to people.
>>
>>54301884
the 2500k was at a perfect price point even on launch day. You could fit it in an $800 build and still manage a mid range discreet GPU.

The fact it's still able to max out almost every game at 1080p still to this day if you have kept recent on GPU upgrades anyway, just shows how good of a buy the 2500k really was.

Most based CPU intel has released since the Q6600.

A $200-300 GPU upgrade a year or two after you bought it and another one last year would have kept you gaming at full 1080p for the past 5 years for under $1500.
>>
>>54301884

I'm still running a 2500K and I have seen literally no reason to upgrade on the horizon.
>>
If I hadn't skimped so hard on my motherboard, and had I actually got around to buying a CPU cooler, I would have never upgraded from my 2500k.

Now that I've made a proper 6700k build, I can't imagine upgrading more than the storage in the next 8 or so years.
>>

>Now that I've made a proper 6700k build, I can't imagine upgrading more than the storage in the next 8 or so years.
I will get a GPU upgrade when Pascal comes out, but this is where I am at as well, and I just got a new 5TB drive the other week, so i'm good on storage for at least 6-12 months.

so what was a better buy at the time then since you seem to have all the answers. And if you say AMD just know I wont even bother to reply.

I have a question for ya'll. I recently got an Asus X540 laptop, as a gift. The cpu is pretty ass. It's a Intel Celeron N3050. Can I upgrade this laptop to a better cpu and what should I upgrade it to, if I can?
>>
>>54301918

>q6600
>based

the q6600 was also a $500 CPU. the real based CPU of the time was the e8400
>>
>>54302135
yeah but if you had a Q6600 you could have held out until just the past year or two, hell there are still a few people using them, though generally OC'd to 3.5Ghz+
>>
>>54302132
very few laptops allow upgrading the CPU, and because of this laptop CPUs tend to be fairly expensive to buy aftermarket. Further, most laptops don't have a BIOS that supports more than one or two CPUs, and on lower end Laptops that only come with 1 CPU SKU, they probably only work with that CPU.

Also, some mobile CPUs are soldered directly to the motherboard.

Basically you're shit out of luck.

What a fucking stupid question.
Any cheap CPU with a mobo bundle on sale at the time over 100$usd or so.
And i3 2100 would fucking work today for just about fucking everything Id bet at or near high settings for fucks sake. You are fucking deluded if you think the the 2500k was for anything but wasting money, Multi GPU setups expect for a very narrow selection of games that ran like shit on everything.
And yes, Often AMD phenom IIs at the time had killer combos because they where so unpopular because of shitty consumer memery, Stores everywhere tried to dump their AMD stock with sweet deals. They consistently had amazing performance for the dollar and never actually had any issues with gaming until you spend many hundreds on SLI setups.

I said AMD, You can stop memeing at me now.

What a POS. My work stations has 2 x Xeon E5's (32 threads), 512 GB SSD, 2 x 2TB 10k RPM disks in RAID1, some NVIDIA GPU and 128 GB RAM.
>>
>>54302158
That's not true at all. Ex q6600 owner here. When I upgraded to 2500k the performance difference was fucking massive, both gaming and everyday desktop usage, because q6600 single threaded performance is shit. The q6600 was already bottlenecking my shitty mid end 2011 gpu. Also it didn't overclock for shit unless you got quite lucky
>>
>>54305556
what was it clocked at? I had my Q6600 until about 4 months ago.

planetside 2
it's CPU intensive and pretty badly optimised, but I'm getting far worse performance than I was getting with the older AMD I was using before

2.4ghz. Highest I could get it was 2.7ghz. I had and unlucky one.

That's almost unbelievably unlucky and makes me suspect you just had a cheap shitty motherboard without voltage control.
