Emacs for email. Libreoffice for docs, files, and photos. Slackware with hurd, cowsay, wget, everything.

There is no good raisin to use Slackware for anything but building custom live images and such. Get Debian if you want to be free-as-in-freedom, or any other popular distro if you don't care.
