Alright /g/, your grandpa wants you to put a GNU + Linux distro on his laptop and his desktop because he's "tired of all the new Microsoft hooplah with the spying and the slow and the errors and the virus". What distro do you pick?
>>54296784
Windows XP SP 4
>>54296784
Xubuntu
>>54296784
Mint.
>>54296784
Fedora.
I literally just put it on a pawn HP computer with Windows 8 today for my old man. Fuck MS.
>>54296864
This. Or KDE if its a decent laptop
>>54296864
Kubuntu or Xubuntu
If he's tired of errors then I wouldn't recommend any Linux distro.
>>54296977
Ah, I see you use HURD as well.
Debian Stable (for exactly what it it's mostly designed to be, STABLE) with occasional source-level modifications compiled using apt-build.
Yes, I'll have /g/ start a community project for some of these right now with:apt-get source gnome-control-center
cd gnome-control-center_3.14.2
quilt new desktop-background-versatility.patch
quilt push desktop-background-versatility.patch
quilt add panels/background/background.ui
nano panels/background/background.ui
quilt refresh
cd ..
cp gnome-control-center_3.14.2/debian/patches/desktop-background-versatility.patch ./
git init
git add desktop-background-versatility.patch
git commit

I installed kubuntu on one of my grandmothers friends desktops once.
It ran ok for about a month then it ran into a bug and couldn't shutdown, The fucker ended up being stuck on a process using 100% cpu in a closed cabinet with no airflow until it eventually cooked the cpu.
>tfw ubuntu killed the poor mans computer
I should have just installed posready 09 on it and he probably would still have his pc today.

All of my grandparents are dead you insensitive bastard.
Also, Slackware.
>>54303982
Guess what, mine are too
You know what my grandpa said when he was alive
"Stop being a dick and grow up nigga"

that'll teach him about how easy and relatively to the situation windows is.
also hes dead
>>54296784
Somebody should make a "Mint Snuff" Mint spinoff for grandparents.
It would be like mint, but looking like win 95-XP
>>54296784
Xubuntu. My grandpa has been running that for years. Regular Ubuntu with Gnome 2 before that.
one more vote for xubuntu
Elementary OS
Put ubuntu on my moms computer (main reason being that the default is a big easy to click sidebar that I won't have to customize. Alot of distros come with these tiny or hidden menus, which I prefer, but they aren't really for old people.
>increased text size under usability settings
>symlinked all windows directories
>remove all traces of amazon
My only guidance was:
"internet doesn't work"
>click the firefox button
"oh"
