Best Distro For A T420

Just snagged a T420 and installed arch on it. Manjaro specifically as I wanted a quick install to tinker with. I notice a lot of minor issues and wonder if I should try another distro. I have tinkered with settings but when I close my lid it does not properly suspend the laptop. When I looked at the wiki it showed a lot of issues with T420 and functions. Battery charging threshold is among them.

TL;DR Which distro is best out of box for a T420?
>>
>>54294698
install gentoo
>>
>>54294721
well played. Now some real answers.
>>
>>54294749
no, seriously.

http://www.thinkwiki.org/wiki/Installing_Gentoo_on_a_ThinkPad_T420
http://www.funtoo.org/Lenovo_Thinkpad_T420
https://wiki.gentoo.org/wiki/Lenovo_ThinkPad_T420s

I don't see any known issues.

if you're allergic to Gentoo, try Debian.

Distro doesn't matter if you don't know how to configure the functions that give you trouble. Install gentoo.

Fair enough, I thought it was something specific to this distro. My mistake. I recall having zero issues with my x201 and arch, I will do some more research.
>>
>>54294883
this mainly

I've had debian, fedora, elementary, ubuntu, arch (3 times), and now i have Antergos.
I recommend arch, just because its a favourite of mine, and i don't seem to have any trouble other than occasional screen tearing, and the nipple scrolling doesnt work. I'm also too lazy to fix these, but you could probably.
>>
>>54294698
Arch, Gentoo, or debian. Arch and Debian are pretty easy, if you install a DE like gnome3 it'll do all the power lid shit for you
>>
>>54294995
did it suspend upon lid close out of the box? I have checked settings but this is not working. It's a pretty frustrating issue.
>>
>>54295025
I will give that a try, I'm not a fan of gnome but apparently the XFCE power manager is not doing its job.
>>
>>54294698
Literally just dealing with the exact same suspend issue on Manjaro right now. After troubleshooting for a cuppa hours I believe it most certainly is kernel related, possibly a missing module.
>>
>>54295030
Nope, but i've heard that many people have that problem, but i've never had it. what distro are you using?
>>
>suspend
What does it do when you close the lid?
>>
OpenBSD. Unless you're prefer freetardism over a quality product.
>>
>>54295282
I prefer having actual choice in software selection.
>>
>>54294698
Debian. The only OS worth using.
>>
>>54294698
>he hasn't even flashed a custom bios
>you are now running AMT arent you anon?
>>
>>54295202
manjaro with xfce, newer kernel too. 4.4 if i recall right
>>
>>54295274
turns off screen. Then if i try to set it to suspend it shows the moon icon light up when I close lid, then it turns back off and when I open it there's nothing. I press power and I have to totally boot back up.
>>
>>54295333
I have not flashed a custom BIOS. I am familiar with flashing BIOS but did not see a reason to do so with this unit. Sorry if I am a bit ignorant to this idea.
>>
>>54295995
Is the moon icon flashing? Slowly or rapidly?
>>
>>54295979
nano (or vim) into
 /etc/systemd/logind.conf

then uncomment ( or comment) the
 #HandleLidSwitch=suspend

That might work. Also excuse me if my code tags didnt work.
>>
>>54296074
What if you didn't have systemd?
>>
>>54296096
try this then

nano (or vim) into
 /etc/acpi/handler.sh

then around line, like, 60 or something there should be a string of code that looks like this:
 logger 'LID closed'

add this line below it
 systemctl suspend

Try that. Or you could scrap manjaro and switch to antergos, or arch.
>>
>>54296164
systemctl is a systemd command.
>>
>>54296200
i figured that out as soon as i hit post, ignore it.
>>
>>54296200
>>54296096
did you create swap space when you installed manjaro?
>>
>>54296276
Of course I did. I've triple checked the size too. I've just tried a Manjaro-openrc Xfce 15.12 live session from a USB stick and suspend works OOTB on it. My current HDD install is from the 16.03 version and suspend is fucked up.

hell, i really dont know what to say then... What does your

look like?
>>

If you want to tinker:
Install Libreboot and gentoo

If you want it to just werk:
install debian / fedora / mint / manjaro / bunsenlabs / Cup Of Linux OS

well then nothing is wrong there.
You just have a buggy distro.

You can try reading this https://www.kernel.org/doc/Documentation/power/states.txt
>>
>>54296465
How the fuck does it work from the live USB then?
>>
>>54296479
I have no idea, man.
I've had kali work from a live disk but as soon as i install it, it doesn't function.
>>
>>54296074
Did exactly what you said and it worked! It was set to "ignore" x.x. Thanks so much!
>>
>>54296465
>>54296489
Also I've just tried
echo platform > /sys/power/disk
echo disk > /sys/power/state

and it still works the same (goes to suspend, can't wake up). So, kernel fuckery then?

Just tried alternate hibernate method via uswsusp; this time it doesn't even go into sleep. Log shows the classic pm-utils shutdown dance, then "s2disk: Could not stat the resume device file. Reason: No such file or directory" and then the wakeup sequence. Dafuq?
