What benefits does Windows 10 actually offer over Windows 7?

Windows 7 offers more control over your computer, but it is becoming deprecated.

I'll fucking miss it though.

RAM and OS compression if you're running on a potato.

It's supported until 2020 so we still have time.

It's faster. Loads up faster. Has more information. Native USB 3 and SSD support. The best driver detection out of every OS I've tried.

You can run it as long as you don't upgrade your hardware. No support from Zen/Skylake and beyond. You will not experience any kind of problems with software. Maybe there will be no more new gayms in a few years, but who the fuck cares.
But personally I prefer 10 Enterprise LTSB - trust me, this is the new meme os from MS as you get best of both worlds - full control over your system with gpedit and completely botnet-free version of Windows 10.

That's because 8, 8.1 and 10 shutdown only if you execute "shutdown" from command prompt, in other cases it is using hibernation technologies for core system components to boot up faster - no any magic involved here.

You can disable fast boot, you know. The boot times in 8+ are still faster than 7's even without fast boot.
>>

Hard to believe. 7 boots in like 5 or 6 seconds on a Intel 530 SSD.

It means they aren't bothering with Skylake specific features like speed step or xpoint. Does not mean it wont run w7.

Windows 7 does not support encrypted windows file shares. On a large network, this is a must.

I moved to 10 to get access to the latest server manager and rsat consoles at work.

I'm really curious about docker containers in server 2016

7 is comfy as fuck, I can control updates, it doesn't stop me moving bloat, it's practically minimal by comparison to 10, no App shit which I'll never use, cleaner, more consistent interface, still supported, still works, still fast as fuck.

I'm not saying I'm not part of muh botnet but there's no escaping that these days so why can't I use what I like?

Dumbass.

Not possible to remove most of Win10's bloatware without convoluted commands.

Not possible to install individual updates.

Sorry, I'm a corporate drone, wagecuck, whatever. I admin Windows systems for a living, so I'm used to using CLI for most of my tasks. I consider scripting more powerful than clicking, and I'm very sorry that you do not.
But thanks for the insightful shitpost totally missing my point.

No, but the thread is about Windows 10.

I'm specifically talking about comparisons between 7 and 10.

I like 8.1 It's like a nice half way point, but I prefer 7.

Seems you're the one missing the point.

Except I was asking what more "control" Windows 7 offers.
I specifically quoted the Windows 7 part. What more control does WINDOWS SEVEN offer?

Address this or fuck off.
>>
>>54298722
I did address it. Can't you read?

It might be very basic stuff compared to your muh commandline self-importance but it's important to the end user.

Yes, you quoted the Windows 7 part. Of a post about Windows 7 and Windows 10.

Windows 7 objectively offers more control in the areas I mentioned than Windows 10.

Windows 8.1? Maybe not. But I don't want to run Windows 8.1.
>>
>>54298751
So it's a black-or-white decision?

>But I don't want to run Windows 8.1.
Well that's fucking sad for you. Can't argue with stubbornness.
Time is ticking. January 2020 is nearing, old man.

If you don't want to run Windows 10, but you fear for the lifespan of Windows 7, you take what's in the middle - isn't that a rational thing to do?

>>54293999
>What benefits does Windows 10 actually offer over Windows 7?
A better command line experience
Better admin control through GPO
Better keyboard shortcuts
That's it. The rest is basic end-user stuff like the revised UI and UX, apps and integrated search.
You obviously already know the drawbacks, and you don't seem to care about the benefits.
>>
>>54293999
>Windows 7 offers more control over your computer
Only about updates, which isn't a problem with Enterprise.

Also 10 is obviously more secure due not being 10 year old shit.
>>
>>54298869
Well no, my preference for 7 is just that, a personal preference (that is, over 8.1).

8.1 runs out in 2023, which isn't much later.

I'll probably put 10 on my new build to ensure everything's up to date but my T420 can keep 7. 10 isn't overly compatible anyway, running the CPU at 97 degrees. 7 keeps it at round 50. Driver issues, I know.
>>
>>54298904
10 is still based on the NT codebase.

7 is still receiving security updates.

Does 10 Enterprise have the ability to check or uncheck updates?
>>
>>54298950
>10 is still based on the NT codebase.
But virtualizes a lot of shit.

>7 is still receiving security updates.
Only the most critical ones. Do you really think MS will spend too much effort on it?

>Does 10 Enterprise have the ability to check or uncheck updates?
Like individual ones? No, but it's more down to the way it works now I guess. You can freely choose when to install them and can roll with the more stable version if that's a concern, which is actually an improvement to 7.
>>
>>54293999
None
>>
>>54298904
Windows 10 can be more secure, but not as you portray it.

Windows 10 by default is no different at all. All vulnerabilties still work on all platforms if left unpatched. Enable UEFI Secure Boot, Device Guard, Windows Hello and Bitlocker and Windows 10 is finally somewhat secure.
>>
>>54295066
Pajert's meme is using Win7 at all.

Those fucking roadpoos can't fathom anything other than shitty ass Win7 so they spam the anti-win10 threads all fucking day.
>>
>>54299226
This isn't an anti-Windows 10 thread in the slightest.
>>
>>54299262
I'm not saying it is, I'm just saying that people have it wrong. Pajeets shill Win7, not Win10.
>>
>>54293999
it is faster in pretty much all regards. Faster boot times, faster searches, faster file transfers. But so is 8.1

I know 8.1 has better performance on legacy hardware than Vista or 7. Haven't tried 10 for that yet
>>
>>54294010
Then it eats all the benefit and more with shit it does in the background. Machine I tested on: AMD C-60, 4 GB RAM. Results: 8.1 > 7 > 10 on being ready to handle tasks. 8.1 > 10 > 7 on boot, suspend and resume.

>>54295120
We already have DirectX, just not 12. And if Vulkan wins we won't need DX12.

>>54295335
8.1 loads up still faster, has native USB 3 and SSD support, and does the same automatic driver search thing 10 does.

>>54295715
Even a full reboot is far faster than on 7.

BTW, easiest way to to a full shutdown is tell it to reboot, then punch the power button when it gets to the BIOS screen, using the boot menu key if it would go by too fast.

Wrong. It's under power options, change what the power buttons do. This applies to both 8.1 and 10.
>>
>>54293999
>Windows, control

DESU I went to 10 due to the visual appeal, I love a flat minimalist design but don't want to fuck with Arch or equivalent for games.
>>
>>54299748
>faster searches
Lies! Both 8.1 and 10's Metro search widgets are laggy compared to 7's start menu search and Classic Shell's. On slow systems, 10 takes longer to find anything. On fast systems 10 still has some lag as the results list scrolls into view and results appear one after another, before you can hit enter -- and if you hit enter before it's done loading results there's a good chance a different result will replace the top one as you hit enter, and you run something you didn't want.

Yeah that sucks. You have to disable pretty much everything, use powershell to slap all the apps around, O&O ShutUp 10, Spybot Antibeacon. Not fun. After all that it's better, though.
>>
>>54300340
Except it doesn't fully kill fast boot, and leaves the filesystem in a dirty state so you have to use shutdown via command line if you want to avoid it.

Have to do this or use ntfsfix to remove the dirty flag in order for the imaging solution that I use at work to image the machine from pxeboot.
>>
Reminder that the next iteration of Intel processors and beyond require Windows 10.

Checkmate, friends.
>>
>>54300375
I cannot tolerate windows 10 visually.

Maybe in 4 years when 7 is deprecated, they'll have finally bothered to finish the fucking metro GUI.

More likely, they'll have jumped on another new design fad, and it will be even more inconsistent.
