IRC: #/tpg/ on irc.rizon.net

Other business laptops are also welcome in /tpg/ (e.g. Dell Latitude/Precision, HP EliteBook/ZBook).
----
If you're looking for purchase advice, READ THE BUYERS GUIDE FIRST. Then post, stating budget and requirements (e.g. size and performance).
Don't buy anything OTHER THAN T, X AND W/P SERIES if you want the Real ThinkPad Experience™

Recommended models:
T420 - 14", normal size
X220 - 12.5", lightweight
----
Why ThinkPad? (also applies to other business laptops)
>Used machines are plentiful and cheap.
>Excellent keyboards - tactile feel and quiet.
>Great durability: chassis uses a magnesium rollcage for structural integrity, with high quality plastic body panels.
>Utilitarian design: e.g. indicator LEDs, 7 row keyboard layout on older models.
>Docking stations that easily turns your laptop into a desktop.
>Easy to repair, upgrade and maintain thanks to readily available service manuals for every model. Spare parts are easy and cheap to obtain.
>The best trackpoint (that red thing in the middle of the keyboard). Great for those who type a lot or hate swiping their fingers all over a touchpad.
>Excellent GNU/Linux & *BSD support.

goodwill is practically the only consumer electronics recycler in town that sells to the public, the rest of the places apparently disassemble and sell the parts on ebay or ship crates of old PCs to China to be melted down.

Why aren't there stores for old computers like there are for video game consoles? Imagine walking into a shop with an entire aisle of used Thinkpads.

I have a thinkpad x201 which is quite old but I don't wanna change it just yet

It keeps overheating (
/sys/class/thermal/thermal_zone0/temp
reports 100 sometimes) and when it's over 100, it just shuts down

In idle mode it ranges about 44, but I often run long machine learning algorithms and that's when it dies. In order to clean it, I just open it up a bit and blow into the fan, and surprisingly it fixes the issue for maybe several days, after which it starts overheating again

what do?

Anyone with an eGPU setup here?
I need to know which one I should get, and which one would provide the most bandwidth. It would be for my T420 and W520 for a full x16 GPU.

I have been looking at the PE4C v2.1 because you can hook two PCIe devices, expresscard and mPCIe, making it a x2 adapter.

The X240 spec lists a msata connection, does this mean I can fit an SSD alongside the current HDD, or just as an alternative. Would having both be detrimental to battery life?
>>
>>54295999
yes you can put in an extra SSD alongside the HDD (but i thought the x240 used m.2 not mSATA)
>>
>>54295999
mSATA slot is open (assuming you don't have WWAN option) and you still have the 2.5" drive bay.

In my x230 I have a mSATA SSD for OS/programs and a 1TB spinning rust for donkey and midget porn.

>battery life
Sort of. Your OS can put the secondary drive to sleep after a period of inactivity to conserve power. However, putting anything in a hole you don't need is going to drain some power.

If you don't need the storage and already have an SSD, keep what you've got.

If you don't have an SSD, get mSATA and do or don't keep the spinning rust in the main bay. That allows you expansion potential for the future if you do need the storage space later.
>>
>>54296102
Thanks, do you think a £25, Transcend 32GB m.2 SSD for the OS would be a worthwhile upgrade?
>>
>>54296245
You of course *can* get by with less for linux (32GB would probably do), but I would want at least 64GB for Windows just to have a little breathing room.

Personally, I think if you're already rocking an x240, save your pesos and don't cheap out on an SSD. 120GB would be my minimum, but I dual-boot, have some gayms, and fuck around with a couple of VMs.

Its ok, the classic dome trackpoint sucks, but my soft rim one works really nice. Its weird using a trackpoint thats right on the edge instead of having the palmrest like on a thinkpad. Took some googling to configure on xubuntu, but it works nicely now. I do want one of those M13 clones (or a black/black m13 like this https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9rHOAX4FlB4 ) though.

ok i only got this bag yesterday so i haven't had the chance to use it and only just opened it up to look inside after posting this

it can hold two thinkpads, the main compartment has removable padding so you could probably even fit a W700 in there comfortably, there's two pockets for ultrabay drives, and about a million other various pockets and compartments for whatever other equipment your international business might require

every aspect of it feels very high-quality and well-designed. the strap is comfortable and easy to adjust, the zippers are smooth, the handles are comfortable but not spineless

no idea what it's called but if you see this bag for a reasonable price fucking buy it

>>
>>54300999
Don't bother. Take it from a fellow winfuck who tried this myself, if you want a minimal install use Debian netinst instead.

Arch makes you do everything, and there's no guarantee it'll ever work. You're gonna be under a lot of duress and headache. Base debian (meaning no desktop environment, no "Standard System Utilities") is very compact, and reasonably stable, AND it comes with an installer, so if you fuck up you just try again, no extensive wiki cross-referencing required.
>>

Hi /tpg/,
someone asked me to reccomend them a laptop. It'll be used for:

* AutoCAD
* Photoshop
* watching movies
* Internet
* maybe some PS1 emulation

I think a T420 would be a good choice. The thing is, they come in many different configs and I don't want to reccommend an overkill.

Which of these upgrades do you think I should get and why?

It wasn't that important. I could afford even the best-spec option, but why waste money on something too powerful? It'd be like buying an i7 1000W box with 2 Titans and 1TB SSD just for Facebook.

Fujitsu Lifebook T5010, T900, T901, or T530/T531 if you have access to eBay.
Just as powerful as a Thinkpad T420 and often very affordable, though they don't come with discrete graphics, they do have quite powerful hardware and I can emulate up to N64 with no problem. Very compact too, and of course they convert to tablets with Wacom digitizers which work beautifully for drawing. As with Thinkpads, the extra digit on the model number implies a Sandy Bridge CPU, while the ones ending in 0 have a Penryn CPU. They are all upgradable too and will take up to 16GB of RAM despite Fujitsu's claims otherwise. There's space for a mini-PCIe SSD where the WWAN card normally goes.

They're functionally similar to the X200/X201, but the build quality is better, even if the plastics used are not as durable. T5010 has a nice borderless drawing surface, but the other models have a normal bezel. They have very bright 16:10 screens as well, and unlike the X200-series, the screen rotates in both directions. The T900 and T730 series come with HDMI out, but it's quite nice to simply flip the screen around and open the lid a little to let the machine stand freely in tablet mode, as I've done here

So I have a bad habit of only using my right thumb to hit space. This over time has caused the right side of the spacebar to not always work.

1. Can it be fixed?

t420s is thinner, is lighter, has a metal body, has a generally more solid build quality, a USB 3.0 port, and in general looks sexier because thinness.

This is at the cost of an expandable battery, and less ports. I'm posting from a t420 with an ultrabay battery expansion. Very comfy.
>>
>>54307512
what do you currently have. If its a t430 you could get a new t430 keyboard or you could get a classic keyboard and do the bios mod to make it work. pretty much any board from the last 4 generations before and including the xx30 series will work.

My Thinkpad doesn't start downloading torrents through Deluge instantly or at all to be fair. Usually torrents start downloading after few seconds after adding them, but now they randomly start downloading like several hours after adding them, usually I've turned off and on the laptop at least once in that time. Any ideas ? I've only recently came into possession of this laptop and I did a clean win10 install, haven't had much chance to fuck something up I hope, did several virus scans and it was clean too

I'd say just buy an IPS panel and replace it yourself, but I take it since you're buying refurbished from jewegg you're not much of a DIYer.

So, it seems my yellow USB port on my X230 stopped detecting peripherals. It delivers power just fine, even when the laptop is turned off (always on enabled), but it simply doesn't detect anything connected to it.

The other USB's on the left side work just fine.

Do you fags have any idea of what's causing this?

>>
>>54312018

Does its svchost.exe seem to just stall, max out its CPU thread, and devour ~2GB of RAM without ever actually downloading or installing any updates? I've been having the same problem with Windows 7 installs as of late and I don't know what to do about it either. Neither fresh installs or new installation media seem to help.
>>
>>54312433
I'll have a look but I doubt its using 2gb of ram, theres only 2gb in the machine.
My issue is odd though because old forum posts show that people havent been having issues with installing win 7 but I'm -assuming- that those people went to a techie to load a lenovo oem disk or some shit onto it.
The lenovo service page seems to show little to no drivers available for x31 and x41 outside of vista, and god knows I REALLY don't want to put that trainwreck on

your question is a bit vague. Gookpads can generally take a large beating and still operate fine . This is more true for the older ones however before Lel-no-vo fucked up the line and made everything a ultrabook clone.
Hardware wise, you would start noticing failures if the fans were damaged or there was significant impact on the mainboard

The worst? You get a thinkpad with everything broken.
Less so? Bad motherboard
Even less so? Bad broken/cracked screen
Then a broken usb port, broken fan
even less important is bad ram, broken hdd, no power supply etc.

If the seller provides a picture of the bottom, there should be a seven-digit TYPE number listed somewhere on it, circled in red in pic related. You can punch that into this site: http://sm.krelay.de/tp/ to get detailed specifications on what that unit was equipped with when it came out of the factory. RAM and storage will likely be inaccurate since they're so easily changed by the user, but the GPU is unlikely to have been swapped, as that requires a full motherboard+heatsink swap.

I had an x200T. This isn't exactly comparable but fuck I loved it, and it didn't even have a trackpad. It was my little baby, cutest damn thing ever. If I didn't start needing the screen real estate for education purposes I would have toted it around forever.

Can I drop in a replacement password EEPROM on a T520 board and have it bootable? I ordered a new board for mine, but if I can just install a new chip onto the old board, I could sell the board as refurbished, yeah?

Chinkpads are for lowend hipsters who can't afford crapintoshes.
You can rice them all you want, but it's still a piece of shit affectation.

I'll make sure to post pics on here when that shit comes in

I'd always opt for the Nvidia in the T420, integrated is so shit it's not even funny if you want to any sort of gaming. Replace the screen eventually too, the 900p stock one is shit compared to the Alienware m14x screen.

Or for people who actually get work done. I just sold a few refurbished (memory upgrade+ssd) T-series thinkpads to guys who were leaving their companies because they wanted enterprise laptops that could actually be used.
Find me a shitty consumer line with a port-replicator dock. Ever.

This is super helpful, thanks.
Ultimately I'd like to assemble a T601F, but I might consider beefing up the T60 as is, depending on my eBay luck.
I don't want to pour too much money into upgrading the T60 if I'll eventually just make a frankenpad, though...

Depends, why did you buy a replacement?
Did it have a bios lock? Then presumingly yes, though I would still test it if it had problems, but that is just me.

It will be a pain in the ass if it was already dissassembled and you dont feel like reassembling it, but if you'd want you may get away with removing the LCD and keyboard to test it (thats all u need anyways, might work with connecting it to a monitor.

>implying Thinkpads aren't as expensive or more than MacBooks
Yes there are cheaper models that are below the Macbook price standard but Apple doesn't want to produce a cheaper laptop just like when they were discouraged people were buying iPad mini so much because they are the cheapest apple product you can get thats not an iPod.

All those upgrades would be transferable to the T601F anyway. You definitely want to replace that XGA screen, and a Merom processor is good to have if your T61 board needs Middleton's BIOS flashed to use a Penryn.

A Nike Lancaster rolltop.

>>54318660
I had already replaced the board because it was BIOS locked. I am wondering if I can just replace the EEPROM with a blank EEPROM of the same model.
>>
>>54318673
Yeah, I'm definitely wanting a screen swap if possible. And good point with the Merom processor, I didn't think of that.
Considering the prices you listed seemed pretty cheap, I just might look into those upgrades once the thing actually arrives.

Well if it worked fine and you dont botch the BIOS reinstall you should be fine.

This is a complete shot in the dark, but I have an issue with my T460p running Windows 10 where it doesn't recognize the HDMI audio. Funny thing is it worked yesterday and the only thing I did was install Ubuntu on it in addition to Windows 10 and a lot of stuff on that system like Nvidia drivers etc. How could that affect the Windows partition?

Can I play league with a T420?

Has anyone figured out where it's possible to buy a keyboard receptacle compatible with X220? Picrelated.

Buying a broken motherboard is one way to do it, but it's way more expensive.
