Enjoy defeating the purpose. dns leaks and selling of your information are rampant with with free vpn's. Pay for a decent one if your interested in using one.

OpenVPN on both sides.

Every free one I've tried failed a DNS leak test

that is your fault, not the VPN software's. If you don't fucking configure the DNS servers pushed by the VPN Server you connected to, it's no surprise.

Then again, with the bullshit NetworkManager on GNU/Linux pulls no surprise there.

Anyone know whats special about DNS packets that causes them not to get routed through the VPN like any other?

If its free YOU are the product

There are no DNS packets. The issue is that after you connect to your VPN you are still using the DNS servers provided by your default gateway -- i.e. your router, and the router uses the DNS servers provided by your ISP.

So even though IP is the VPN's, you still translate domains to IPs via your ISP's DNS servers. You have to adjust how your system resolves domains, depending on the operating system the instructions differ.

If you are using GNU/Linux check out /etc/resolv.conf.
