My sister wants to get a laptop for general facebooking. What manufacturer should she go for?

Honestly, >>54276642 is onto something. The iPad is a fucking great general-purpose computer, especially at $400-600. It's light, it's long-lasting, it's stylish, it's functional, and the new Pro models even have a keyboard port and a digitizer.

Here's the thing: if what she wants is a laptop for general light use, she probably values portability, aesthetics, and battery life over power. In light of that, you'd want an Ultrabook or something similar, were you to consider a PC. Ultrabooks, however, tend to run $1000+, making the price distinction between one of them and a Macbook pretty fuzzy. So, yeah, if you want to spend $400-600 on a Facebook machine, I'd recommend an iPad Air 2 or a 10" iPad Pro.

Cool counter-argument, bro.

Seriously, if I didn't play porn games in a Windows VM on my laptop, I could just get rid of it and use my fucking iPad Air 2 for almost all of what I do day-to-day. The peanut gallery is selling it short, don't take their word for it.

A "Facebook machine" needs very little power. A person who wants a "Facebook machine" is likely to not give a flying fuck about computers, and care more about how it looks and how easy it is to carry than how many niggerwatts you can squeeze out of the processor. Therefore, the thinner, lighter computer is going to appeal to them more. An Ultrabook fits these desires, but they're expensive. Tablets get the job done nearly as well, and are much cheaper.

How retarded do you have to be to not understand this? Normies don't want two-inch-thick Thinkpads or five-pound Dell Inspirons. They only buy the latter because they're cheap and you can get them at Wal-mart, and they usually end up hating them afterwards. My wife hates hers. She's mad jelly of my three-year-old Macbook Air.
>>
>>54277557
What's your definition of an ultrabook? I'm curious. I always assumed that class of laptop was defined by 'large screen, high specs, fancy integrated peripherals, and not enough cooling'. Kind of like a foolish man's desktop replacement. I could be wrong.
>>
>>54277653

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ultrabook

>Ultrabook is a specification and trademarked brand by Intel for a class of high-end subnotebooks designed to feature reduced bulk without compromising battery life. They use low-power Intel Core processors, solid-state drives, and unibody chassis to help meet these criteria. Due to their limited size, Ultrabooks typically omit common laptop features such as optical disc drives and Ethernet ports. Ultrabook is a portmanteau of words ultraportable and notebook.
>>
>>54277675
TIL
The Chromebook is still a better internet machine though. Most normies eat up the idea of an ARM device with attached keyboard.
>>
Who cares. They're cheap enough use for kindling and obviously you or your sister aren't smart enough to know what is good.

If you listen to these faggots they'll try to talk you into a mac. Just get her a Toshiba, they typically have decent keyboard in my experience and that's all that really matters, they're all too cheap to care.

Just don't get a chromebook and don't get a ThinkPad.
>>
>>54277725
>they'll talk you into a mac
>don't get chromebook

get out, obvious Toshiba shill
>>
>>54277721

The Chromebook would be my second choice, yes.

That said... I don't know... I don't like recommending obviously low-quality computers, because they create preconceived notions in people's heads concerning what computers and technology are/do. I don't want people to dislike their companion tech.
>>
Does she care about having a keyboard built in / having a laptop form factor?
Yes >>>Chromebook
No >>>Android tablet

Or, if you don't care about money, get a nice ultrabook so she'll have more processing power than she needs rather than barely enough like she'd have with either of the above.

I knew that would happen, I was going to just say hp or dell but I went with Toshiba. I really don't give a fuck what OP buys. But I think chromebooks are shit, ThinkPads are memes, and apple is overpriced shit with the worst fan base in the world.
>>
>>54277821

>Android tablet

NO.

I owned both Nexus 7s, a Shield Tablet, and a Note Pro. FUCK Android tablets. It's a world of blown-up phone apps and related horse shit. Android tablets are a second class citizen.

If you are getting a tablet, get an iPad. I promise, I'm not saying this because I'm in the tank for Apple. I'm saying this because I've spent a lot of time in both ecosystems, and one just isn't good. Doubly so for normies.
>>
>>54277787
>create preconceived notions in people's heads concerning what computers are/do

Agreed. However that is one of the sins I believe Apple products, especially iOS devices, are guilty of.
>>

Get a $1399 macbook. Rose Gold. Literally a facebook machine.
>>
>>54277221
>it's functional
.can't even download files
top zoz
>>
>>54277907
Tru dat. An iPad is more of a companion device to be used with a Mac, not so much a standalone tablet computer like a Surface would be.
>>
>>54277907

You usually don't need to. Especially if you're a normie. If you're a normie, you're usually either saving an image (can do that) or downloading an app (we have the App Store for that). PDFs and shit can be viewed in the browser, or opened from cloud storage.
>>
>>54277953

The Surface is not a tablet. It is a laptop that happens to have a detachable keyboard. It's dramatically less useful/usable without its keyboard, because Windows is a convoluted pile of shit that doesn't know what it wants to be. Windows doesn't even have a good comic reader in its app store.
>>
>>54277221
Lol no. I have a 10" iPad Pro. It's not a laptop replacement. Also, decent ultra books are down in the 600 range.
>>
>>54278013

What do you do? Are you a normie? Because OP's sister is. You can sit there and pound your fists on the keyboard all day about how you can't write code or run engineering software on the iPad, but that doesn't fucking matter to most people outside of this board.
>>
Get her a used Thinkpad X220
>>
>>54277976
>Windows doesn't even have a good comic reader in its app store.
Then don't use its app store. The Windows store is shit. Instead of one of the countless normal Windows programs you can download from all over the internet.

>The Surface is not a tablet
https://www.microsoft.com/surface/en-us
>The tablet that can replace your laptop.
>tablet
Even Microsoft calls it a tablet. It's a wide flat mobile touchscreen computing device with no physical keyboard attached to the main unit. It's a fucking tablet.
>>
>>54278074
>Thinkpad for normie use (i.e. A Facebook Machine)

lol
>>
>>54278081

>use normal Windows programs

Normal Windows comic readers suck even worse than the ones on the app store. Believe me, I've been down that road.

>Even Microsoft calls it a tablet.

If Microsoft called it a motherfucking didgeridoo, would that make it one? Fuck no, it wouldn't.
>>
A modern thinkpad! T450 or t460. Treat your imouto right, none of this applefag crap
>>
>>54278123
>Normal Windows comic readers suck even worse than the ones on the app store. Believe me, I've been down that road.
I don't read comics often so when I do I just use a normal image viewer. But ComicRack looks breddy gud.

>If Microsoft called it a motherfucking didgeridoo, would that make it one? Fuck no, it wouldn't.
But they don't call it a didgeridoo, because it isn't a didgeridoo. They call it a tablet because it is, and just about anyone looking at one separated from the keyboard would call it a tablet.

Laptops have all the computer stuff in the keyboard part, with the screen permanently attached on a hinge that supports it.

The iPad, which I'm pretty sure you would call a tablet, has all the computer parts in the screen. If a keyboard is desired, it can be slid into optional cases that fold open, use a stand to prop up the iPad, and include a keyboard.

The Surface has all the computer stuff in the screen with a stand on it, with an optional and sold-separately keyboard that clicks on and has nothing in it but keyboard and trackpad.

Which does this arrangement sound more like, a laptop or an iPad?
>>
>>54278074
This. x220 should run you 200-400 currencies. Hit it with a new battery and ssd, perfect.
Alternatively get a t420 if it's for stationary use.

>>54278092
>lol
ebin
>>
>>54278092

I've bought thinkpads for all of my family. Install mint and never bother with it again. 300 dollars will buy you plenty of computer.
>>
>>54278283

The t520 is infinitely better for stationary use.
>>
>>54278279

>ComicRack looks breddy gud.

You would think, yes. But it's terrible compared to something like Chunky on iOS.

>The iPad, which I'm pretty sure you would call a tablet, has all the computer parts in the screen. If a keyboard is desired, it can be slid into optional cases that fold open, use a stand to prop up the iPad, and include a keyboard.

The difference is that the iPad is designed from the ground up as a touch-first OS. Windows is not. Windows becomes considerably less useful when you take away its keyboard. Hence why I would consider a Windows "tablet" to be more akin to a laptop with a detachable keyboard. You can detach the keyboard and use the OSK instead, but there's no escaping that it, and almost all of its software, is designed for a keyboard and mouse/trackpad.
>>
>>54278326
A desktop is still better for stationary use.
>>
>>54278326
True, another option.

>>54278339
I would always pick a desktop for performance, but that's not necessary for a facebook machine.
>>
>>54278336
Windows 10 has a tablet mode, and modern apps are way more touch friendly. If you choose to run in desktop mode with all legacy apps, of course it's going to be optimized for keyboard and mouse.
>>
>>54278339

Sort of. It depends on your needs. A t520 with a dock is perfect for me as it allows me some portability when I need and, but the features of a desktop. I only really do light photo editing, browsing, and programming. A separate desktop would be a waste.

>>
>>54278398
Or put Linux on it and have a low-powered general use PC.

I'm pretty sure the old AspireOne I've been using lately is less powerful than a lot of Chromebooks. I don't ask a ton of it, but I've been able to pretty comfortably browse, watch videos, GIMP, and use an IDE inside of a VM to program.
>>
>>54278376

>modern apps

That's just the thing, there aren't enough of those for a Surface to be viable as a standalone tablet computer.

I couldn't even get through a 15-minute hands-on session with the Surface Pro 4 without discovering pain points relating to the app gap.
>>
>>54276611
a laptop for memebooking? wtf, get her a decent smartphone
ur welcome
>>
>>54278482
The surface pro is nice cuz u can cum on the screen after masturbating and wipe it off no problem. I prefer Windows 8.0 to 10.
>>
>>54277221
This speaks a lot of truth. Truth that /g/ won't be able to get the through their autistic heads

Whilst, personally, I don't see the point in tablets/iPads, you cannot deny their place in the market.
Normies love them because it why they need it to do in a graphically pleasing, simple manner.
They can get trusted apps from the stores, mostly for free, without having to worry about fucking their device up.
The closed "can't do anything" nature of them keeps them safe and keeps the device running decent.
A chinkpad with a tiling wm isn't for everyone /g/. If you truly are interested in tech, you should be able to appreciate the normie tech for what it does for people.
And iPad probably would be a great move.
>>
>>54278283
