Appears the US can hold you for an indefinite amount of time if you don't tell them your passwords. Plausible deniability btfo.

That's different. I talk with a lawyer that explains that you can be hold only for suspiction for a definite amount of time (e.g. 1 year) just because you are suspected and waiting for the DA formalizing the accuse to you or to release you. The fact that the judge said that he will released when he'll tell the password is not relate with the fact he is hold.

Also the real problem is the 5th Amendament. He can not testify against himself as stated in this document http://arstechnica.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/04/effamicus.pdf but he is compelled to.

An higher authority should solve this problem. So even if this don't seem llega it's just because you don't know the lay, apparently...

>are you saying they will provide food, shelter, and medical care, in a non-prison environment, for life?
he's being held in the philly federal detention center.

Well God made the USA personally and he probably had a good reason for making encryption illegal. Are you questioning the authority of God?
>>
>>54276370
Liars burn in hell. Rev.28.8
>>
Actually it is possible they could hold him until he produces the password:

In re Boucher a border agent saw child pornograpy on a laptop but the laptop auto-locked. The courts ruled the defendant was required to provide the password as the password "adds little or nothing to the sum total of the Government's information about the existence and location of files that may contain incriminating information".

the fact that his sister testified she saw it may give them enough leverage.

if he's really smart, this is why he already provided non-working passwords.

>2016
>being fearful of authority

funny thing is, there are things you don't even know about, actions which are worse than any crime you can think of, which are perfectly 100% legal, and nobody can stop you from doing them

the government works for the people, and not the other way around.
maybe they are the ones who need to be afraid some times, and submit to citizen authority
>>
>>54278139
Veracrypt does that. OS X's FileVault does not.

>browse tor network to make feds suspect you

>get free housing, food etc for as long as it pleases you

>tell them password or have it leaked whenever you want to get out
>sue government for false imprisonment
>>
>>54276507
The encryption key is a literal get-out-of-jail free card.
>>
Isn't it more ideal to just use a regular encrypted container? At least with that they would need to prove that the file is encrypted in the first place. I take it the apple program this guy is using asks for a password the moment it's connected to a computer, making it obvious.
>>
There is a well-defined exemption to the 5th Amendment that allows judges to compel passwords to computers when the contents are foreclosed.

>look at my anecdotal evidence.

>>
>>54278810

It's not an abusive law. The government has to make a substantial showing that they already know what the drive contains before they compel someone to produce a password. This is actually a higher standard than a traditional search warrant.
>>
>>54278890
>The government has to make a substantial showing that they already know
Yes and they define the meaning of substantial showing so you better stop using encryption all together unless you want to learn just how far they can stretch its meaning

Nope.
You had the opportunity to clear yourself early on but chose to go to jail; your choice.
You would get NOTHING! Do you understand? NOTHING!
>>
If you're in the situation where your hard drive contains information that can put you away for life, why would you willing hand it over? Sure they can hold you but eventually they'll give up when nothing comes to surface.

Traditional search warrants aren't exactly a high standard, the laws are a blanket system so that you can be picked off when you're problematic to whatever the current agenda is

Does some guy smoke pot within a mile radius of you? Are you growing your local state's plant in your window in a pot? Have you ever connected to TOR ever, or torrented a Gentoo ISO? You must be an illegal drug dealing child trafficking terrorist. Law enforcement now has a free pass to do whatever they want.
