I've been wanting more screen space and was wondering it was better to get a big fuck off monitor or multiple monitors. And if I get multiple where's the sweet spot?

I have three monitors two of which are 1920x1080 and one is 2560x1440 (center).

It's amazing for productivity, I love it and I don't think I could ever go back to a single monitor set up. For gaming I only use one monitor. It's a hassle to configure surround and it taxes your GPU. I tried it once and quickly figured out it wasn't worth the effort. I don't game much anymore anyway so it really wasn't for me. I will say it is nice to have the game open in one monitor and stuff open in the other two at the same time though.
>>
>>54273255
thanks anon. How much did this set you back though? and in a three monitor setup do the borders effect anything or do you just get used to them?
>>
>>54272899
Woah!!!!!!!!!!! I've never even dared to dream this big, and there you are. Is that your setup? Can you tell me about the hardware driving that monster? I want to know all about it please

I originally had three 1080p monitors and I think those where around $140 a pop cause cheap ASUS eIPS. I started with one and bought the other two later.

I got the 1440p panel for somewhere between $300-400. I don't remember since I've had it for awhile, I may have gotten it on sale but like I said it was a few years ago. Going multimonitor will set you back a bit depending on how much you cheap out on your monitors. Higher res IPS will cost you more, cheap TN less. If you're a super poorfag you can always go to goodwill and pick up an older 4:3 LCD screen for around $10, res will probably be around 1280x1024, or maybe 1600x1200. It's not great but it's better than nothing. Test it and make sure it works though.

I just got used to the borders. It doesn't really bother me. There are monitors with slimmer borders but you'll usually pay a premium for it.

what gpu do you have and which games do you play on what settings?
>>
>>54273386
I had a GTX 670 at the time, now I have a 970 and I largely don't play games any more. When I do it's usually not graphics intensive, I'll do something like Civ V or Cities Skylines which I max out.

Most graphics intensive game I've played recently was probably Fallout 4 last Nov/Dec and that I think I had maxed or very near to it. This is at 2560x1440. I don't plan to upgrade for several years since I am not gaming as often as I used to.
>>
>>54272683

It depends man.

Started with 1x24 +2x17 portrait, upgraded to 3x24 and then went back to 2x24 16:10 which was ideal for me.

I have a multi-monitor set-up that spans about three physical computers, two consoles, and anywhere between 3-6 VMs.
>3 21" Acer 1920x1080p monitors stacked vertically on the left for VMs
They have their own dedicated wireless mini-keyboard with touchpad (no mouse because there isn't enough room for that)
>2 24" 1920x1080p stacked vertically on the right
One is for my network monitoring computer, the other is for lightweight browsing (my always-on computer running a Pentium J1900) and shared with my PS3 and PS4. Again, they have their own dedicated wireless keyboard with touchpad.

Got 2 additional monitors, almost never use them.
If you have good window management and a modicum of short-term memory, you don't need more than 1 good monitor.
>>
>>54273297
It's a single 980ti, any GPU with the display port options could drive it.

Though at this point you should just wait for polaris/pascal as the 980ti gets no performance gains from DX12

If you like tiling window managers, go with one highres big screen, if you are stuck on windows multiple screens might be useful.

you are looking at 2 video wall controllers and enough monitors to test the feeds.
I'm using this rig for animation and testing, it's for a projection mapping project using 12 10,000 lumen projectors, to be distributed over a large site.

You know I have been interested in getting into this. We have a display using it on our museum at work. I got a copy of VPT7 and a projector. I think this would be a pretty nice field to get into myself. How do you like it?

You guys are very limited in your thinking. My girl is in Finance and no fucking way can she do her work on one monitor. I have had a triple setup for 12yrs..that's one fucking long life for a meme huh? Maybe, cause it is not a meme is why.

"Duh, my limited thinkin capacity can't see a value to something, so how can some people see value in it"

You kids are special here alright.

Yeah it's pretty good fun as far as work goes, the money's in advertising with this stuff.
Make a show in a city centre that gets attention then stick a brand name or logo on it or whatever, that's the game.
Using Resolume and mad mapper currently, always on the lookout for new things though, cheers.

Just get 2. Then if you feel the need for more, get a third.
>>
I could never go back to a single monitor, but I found when I tried out 3 monitors I never used the third one.

I game on my main monitor, and use a second on the left side for displaying chat, twitter, web pages, afterburner, etc.
>>
>>54272855
you want 3 monitors. As a student (biology, lots of large datasets) it was almost crucial to have that amount of screen space. 1 monitor for your report and draft work, notes, etc. 1 monitor for your data and any analyses you are performing, and 1 monitor for any research, journals, etc.
>>
>>54277785
>multiple screens never work well
literally retarded
>>
>>54272683
>I've been wanting more screen space and was wondering it was better to get a big fuck off monitor or multiple monitors.
Multiple monitors have the benefit of better screen organization and the ability to turn them off when not playing. I am currently using three 1080p 24'' monitors, and use various combinations for different tasks.
>And if I get multiple where's the sweet spot?
You're gonna have to figure that one out yourself, it's different for everybody.
>>
>>54284854
multiple 1080p monitors is also typically gonna be cheaper than a big 4k monitor

also gaming at 4k still requires really expensive GPU setups right now, and playing at native 1080p is much nicer than 1080p scaled to 4k.
>>
It's the best time to get 3 since sub $200 cards can do it all from one GPU now. You can find a mount if you need one for $100 or so and each monitor should also not be more than $120 each depending on what you want. If you already have a desktop with one monitor then this means the upgrade to go to 3 would be less than $500. That also means if you were starting with nothing you could make a 3 monitor build for less than $1K.

Alternatively even most pre-builts and even the shittiest integrated video cards come with support for two monitors now and a USB graphics card for #3 would be $40 or so. However you can't do gaming on this. If you only care about working then this is the cheapest choice for you as a $300 prebuilt would get the job done.

I say if you're gonna go for 2 you might as well do 3 because you're paying just a little more for a whole lot. You can't do multi-monitor gaming on 2 since your viewpoint would be between the bezels. Make sure your game or app isn't impossible to set this up with, best site is http://www.wsgf.org/ . They also have apps there too, not just games.

Currently rocking 5760 x 1080 and it's fucking great, I'm basically banned from /vr/ because of how anti-emulator they are and how in the case of the N64 it's 20 times the original res and they just shit their pants every time with rage. Dolphin looks fucking glorious at 4x internal res and it's also possible but annoying to get PCSX2 in this res with hex hacks. All the 3D PC games I want work great. Can also do 2D emulators on this for a fun joke and every game becomes sonic fast due to the stretching.
>>
I have a tripple monitor setup and think it's worth it with at least two monitors. So if you can aford it then buy three just because it looks much nicer and might be somewhat more useful. Otherwise just get two ang get the most of it anyway.

Protip: if you get two, place one vertical to read the mangos easily. The only thing I miss from only having two.

>1 for gaming
>1 for movies/music while gaming
>1 vertical for facebook/skype/coding/browsing for shit aobut the game im playing
the only time im using all 3 monitors is when im playing video games
other than that i only use 2 at any given time
