This is true. C# is incredibly efficient and a well designed language for programming on Windows, cross-platform it's not quite there yet. C++fills that hole.

C and Java are just garbage. Enjoy your vulnerabilities. C++ is C improved in every way. C# is Java improved in every way.

Pretty accurate OP.

Mostly correct.
>c# and c++ top tier
c++ is fine, c# should probably move down to Java's tier.
Possibly slightly below it within the same tier.

These are right where they belong.

You're right for the wrong reasons.
Visual Studio is the best IDE ever created, and .NET one of the best, if not the best framework ever created. The C# language is mediocre. any language that forces you to use classes is inherently bad.

What about ASM op?

C# in comparison to C++ btfos it purely as a language.

Better readability, much quicker to develop with, much better in many features, can write 1 line of code in c# equivalent to like 10 lines in C++ which ends up being a jumbled, confusing mess.

>>54271535

Nobody in the industry cares about this language anymore. It was nice to learn just cause it forces you to learn proper OOP while not being quite as irrelevant as Smalltalk... So I still recommend it for learning purposes just like I recommend Lisp (or maybe even Haskell) for similar reasons. And i think more schools should teach their mid-advanced level OO courses in Ruby (back when I was an undergrad, I was taught in Smalltalk, but outside that one class, I haven't used that language even once).

Bioinformaticians outside academia use R too.

>>54272430
R - Daily bread and butter for data analysis
Java - mostly Java EE, wrapping up our group's work as web tools or otherwise things even a biologist could use; as the primary maintainer of our group's tools I end up using it a lot
Bash - Daily duct tape for our servers
Matlab - used a lot in my student days, now I barely use it, displaced by R (which is generally shittier but more common in my field and with a wider code base for my purposes)
Python - Daily scripting tool when Bash is not enough and/or I need Biopython
C - Used for performance critical bits of our tools and/or small self-contained tools, second language I have learned after Pascal as a kid, I feel very comfortable with it
Perl - Daily scripting tool back when I didn't know Python and Biopython could not compete with BioPerl
C++ - Learned when I tried to make more complex programs in C as a teen and wanted to dabble in vidya programming, these days I mostly just use C though
Groovy - Learned it because some bioinformatics project used it and I was going to contribute, but since I've been disappointed with both the project and the tool
ActionScript - Made some flash games as a teen
php - Dabbled in web stuff as a teen
Pascal - First language I have learned as a kid in the early 90s, switched to C quite quickly though
>>

It's definitely still being used, but it is being slowly displaced by Python, and has lost ground significantly since its heyday in the 00s when there were few alternatives to using BioPerl. Many older bioinformaticians still use it though.

I would say it's worth knowing on a basic level because quite often an interesting tool/pipeline from some paper will turn out to be some jury-rigged series of shell scripts wrapped around some Perl scripts and you will have to fiddle with it to get it to work properly.

For your own code it's probably better to use Python where you would earlier use Perl though.

ITT: college-level language holy wars.

Working at a big silicon valley tech company you'll likely be required to use Java or C++. It's good to know the tooling around them. I've made a career for the past 8 or so years from moving to Java/JVM languages. It's better suited for extremely large and global teams. I've also managed to be generally pajeet free in that time. YMMV.
