For a technology board you really don't talk about tv's very often.

Let's talk about home theaters. Post set ups if you have them, talk about favorite TV's, best speaker brands, your media centers, etc.

I'll start. Here's the tv I'm looking to start my setup with right now. Vizio P65-C1. Anyone have experience with vizio tvs? I know its more of an off brand but I've heard good things about the P- series. Sadly they're not being offered in Canada right now...

what about OLED? LG really leading the charge here. They should be more affordable within the next two years, but I'm worried about buying something that might not last. I've had my current led tv for about 8 years now so I feel more comfortable with them.

I have a question about setting up a media center with a raspberry pi. I'd like to get one and mount it on my wall behind the tv. I know it can't decode 4k, but as long as it's just streaming 4k content from another computer/server is that alright?

no

Excellent thread. I'm looking to finish my sub basement and need a TV. I'd like to plug my PC in and browse the web but I'm not sure if I should get a great 1080p screen or jump on the 4k train.

I'm looking at getting a decent 40-46" set, i do quite like the android ones by Sony, but it might be worth waiting for the 2016 models to drop with presumably better processors.

Any anons that build their own Ambilight?
I've been shopping around for the following:
>CEC HDCP enabled hdmi splitter
>HDMI to composite converter
>Composite video capture
>5m WS2812B consisting of one strand
> Raspberry Pi or a Orange PI One
>5V power supply, running the whole deal.

Should be right around 80$ with the added benefit of a media center
>>
>>54272421
I'd say if you're looking at 55" or bigger then 4k is the only way to go. Unless your couch is really far from your tv.
>>
>>54272495
what are good places to get good speaker reviews or recommendations? what do you personally use?

>>54272519
Hello anon. Please tell me your experiance using the PC on your TV. I am curious for a near exact setup.
>>
>>54271260
If the 4k decoding is done on a proper machine and the rpi is basically just a receiver then yes. Otherwise no

your led tv surely degraded in color accuracy during the years.

as long as you don't have static content on your oled, it's gonna last just as well
>>
>>54272863
It seems after reading more that it's more of a myth that they don't last as long

still would be worried about burn in on sports tickers and stuff
>>
>>54272787
the only way it will work is if the server transcodes it to 1080p h264 or less
decompressed 4k video is fucking huge, and you won't be able to transport that over fast ethernet
>>
>>54270083
I use Kodi DSPlayer with madVR, it's fucking awesome.
Nnedi3 and Crispen Edge are amazing.
>>
>>54272976
so it'd be better to build a rig and just put it under my tv to set it up directly?
>>
>>54272451
A bigger house
>>
>>54273043
if you want to stream 4k video, use something that can decode 4k video on the tv
even a standard desktop won't do for transporting raw 4k video, i found it's ~2.39Gb/s (over twice the bandwidth gigabit ethernet can sustain)
video compression is pretty amazing
>>
>>54273074
to be clear, you only want to transport compressed video, be it the original file, or transcoded by a server
i don't believe the rpi can decode any kind of compressed 4k video, and it also has no means of receiving uncompressed 4k video, so you can stratch that idea entirely

http://mymediaexperience.com/updated-htpc-recommendations/

It says you should build to support H.265, so you need a 960 at least?
>>
>>54272451
rtings.com is good for sorting quality tv's by price.
>>
>>54272495
Do you actually have some knowledge about loudspeakers and rooms and their interactions? Do you provide services like room treatment and/or DSP with installation? Or are you just going by loudspeaker prices, manufacturer claims and "they sound great to me" -mindset in the store? What about displays and projectors? Do you do calibration to them?
>>
>>54271006
still have my 50' panasonic plasma from like 2009 shit is gorgie
>>
>>54273220
that link is garbage, my i5 4590 can decode h265@4K without any issues
>>
>>54273220
it would be a good idea to get something that can do h.265, or at least can be upgraded to support it later on

wikipedia says the 950 has HEVC (H.265) decoding support as well

it might be more cost effective right now to get a cpu that can decode 1080p HEVC, and worry about 4K HEVC a bit later, as content comes out and cheaper video cards with support for it are released
>>
>>54273401
yeah I won't be building this right away so I can at least wait for the next gen cards to come out, which should bring a drop for the 950/960. Thanks for the help though.
>>
>>54271260
Spend the extra 100$ or so and get an embedded celeron board with a cheapo video card. Remember to get a Pico PSU

I love Home Theater threads but they're rare in /g and even rarer in /v.

Currently I've got an old 2006 Sony Bravia XBR2 that has served me well for a DECADE now. I'm about to get married and have been building up my theater tech.

I'm planning on one of the new Sony 4k tv's, they're pretty amazing. Perhaps a Samsung as the secondary, but maybe a Vizio seeing as in the last several years they've really come up in quality.

Onkyo for receiver and surround system. I'm got a 7.1 system waiting in the basement. I like their components although I know Denon is supposedly still top tier. I've heard good things about Dolby ATMOS but haven't seen/heard it first hand yet.

I plan to have my mancave with a 75-85" LCD, dual towers storing game systems and components, Logitech universal remote, and Sonos hooked across the house for music.

Probably will furnish with 2 LoveSacs I've gotten at big discount, and a nice L-Shaped sectional.
>>
>>54274726
>LoveSacs
Das it mane.

Looking at those new Vizio's myself. I've only had experience with the budget series but I hear a lot about the upper end.
>>
>>54275393

Have a CitySac and a SuperSac. They have sales around the year if you know when to shop you can get them up to about 50% off. I may go for a Big One eventually. The dream is to have a finished basement mancave that allows for ultimate hanging out, movies, gaming and game-watching.

Vizios are tight these days for the best bang for buck but those new Sonyyyys

Just what I was looking for.
Gonna pull a philips 40in 4k display and run it on my rig (4790+690x2)
In my living room with probably an xbone wireless controller using kodi and steam big picture.
>>
>>54275615
40in 4k
How far back you sitting? Just curious, if I get 4k TV for PC and how big I would need.
>>
I have a Demon 7.2 Receiver, two Pure Acoustics floorstanding speakers, and the rest of the surround sound is leftover from a home theater in a box I got from Onkyo many years ago.

I'm slowly upgrading my sound system, ideally I'd like to replace the subwoofer and center channel soon but I'm not sure with what.

After that it's going to have to be a TV. I've been waiting for 4K content to expand but there just isn't that much out there yet. When there is I'm hoping to grab OLED, but not curved because I have a large sitting space so if friends are over sitting on the sidelines they won't be able to see the tv screen.

The one home theater tech I don't like is Bose. They are extremely expensive for proprietary systems that you can't really plug other speakers into. If you have a small theater space I can see the appeal, but you'll probably benefit from a really good 2.1 setup more than what Bose has to offer.

I'll share a picture when I clean up the place, had a party last night and haven't gotten around to fixing things up yet.

40in if you want to use 100% scaling. Anything smaller and you'll have to use and 125-150% scaling.
>>
>>54275649
I'll be sitting both in desktop use, and on a couch about 2.5m away. U can get very good scaling with a 40inch 4k so it's optimal for both.

Hey I was wondering if there are any television enthusiasts in here who might know something about my tv.
It's a Samsung PPM63M7FSX Plasma 63 inch TV.

All I really just want to know is if it's worth anything and maybe if someone knows the original price too, that'd be cool, as i bought it used a couple of years ago.
Pic related.
