is this worth getting if i dont know anything about how processors work and the most i know about 6502 assembly is LDA and STA?

OP is that book any good? I was thinking of getting it but bought Black Hat Python instead.

So far (three chapters in) it's absolutely garbage.

Why is it so hard to learn some basic hacking shit? I just want to do some simple things like install a rootkit on a USB drive or attack computers over a network.

Is it a goddamned secret or something?

Someone please point me in the right direction.

You don't want to be a hacker, you want to be a script kiddie.

Yes, that's a big differnce.

Script Kiddie:
>bush button
>Imma chargin' malaysia
>damage done
>lol

Hacker is kind of an umbrella term (pentester, phreaker, spoofer, ..) but generally you'll need:
>Computer Skills (being decent in Linux, general plattform knowledge, being able to set up network parameters, ..)
>Programming Skills (Python, Bash and C are mandatory, a little Assembly or PERL wouldn't hurt either)
>Hardware Technologies (networking skills, wireless technologies)
>Web technologies (how to redirect traffic)
>Database skills (SQL injections and so on)
>Security concepts (Intrusion Detection Systems, at least some basics in cryptography and forensics)
>thinking creative, meeting other like-minded folks, getting new idea, trying out new stuff, being persistent

So you don't have to know all this stuff inside out and you don't get decent in one week. But generally this is what you should aim for to learn in the next year.

If you don't want to, you won't be a hacker, it's as simple as that.
>>
>>54269204
That was just one example from a list that you need to know for doing something related to hacking

>attack computers over a network
you find exploits in the code of a program that allow you to execute malicious code on the target. Most of the time these kind of exploits work on memory allocation errors that lead to your normal input being executed as machine code.
When you are just trying to exploit old software with known bugs, you use packet scanning software to find out network services and in the best scenario their software version. If you find outdated software and know of an exploit affecting it then you can try using it to execute your code (e.g. rootkit) on the machine.
The Metasploit framework documents exploits and allows you to rapidly find and utilize vulnerabilities. It is primarily meant for penetration testers to scan corporate networks, but it can obviously be used for malicious purposes too.
>>
>>54276477
Also forgot to mention that it is never that easy, computers nowadays come with several different technologies to prevent arbitrary code execution and literally everything has a firewall that makes it hard for remote addresses to scan and connect to targets.

I like it because it really emphasizes why higher level language techniques won't work. I wish it covered countermeasures more, but the included demo disk is Ubuntu 7.04 (on purpose so you can practice exploits - a lot of the countermeasures for buffer overflows don't show up until at least Ubuntu 9.04).
>>
>>54269204
Literally this. Which is why I love OP's book because it emphasizes the parts of C that need to be paid attention to in order to mitigate attacks and build stable low level programs.

Just reading the books? Probably not that great. Coding is like painting or learning an instrument. You can read about it all day, but you don't learn how to do it until you actually sit down and do it. Essentially, just write about 100000 lines of shitty code, then you might be able to write a couple lines of alright code. If you're lucky.

>Special Forces candidates are weeded out in the “log pit,” where they roll back and forth for long periods of time. A candidate becomes physically ill during the process and is hazed by the instructor. While these assessment techniques may have proven effective for selecting Green Berets, this approach would fail when selecting the most capable cyber warriors

Such wisdom.
>>
>>54288664

I think the point that's being made is that the standard selection criteria won't fit.

> We feel obliged to add a caveat to our mention of certifications. Certifications, no matter how hard to obtain, are not an endstate. The same is true for a college degree. Human resources personnel love to use certifications and degrees as screening criteria for hiring decisions because it makes their job easier.
>However, a college degree nor a set of certifications are a guarantee of success, particularly in cyber security where many great people are self-taught. We encourage you to look holistically at each individual before making a hiring decision, otherwise the larger bureaucracy of the US Government may force hiring of the wrong people.
