seriously, fuck this retarded shit. fuck this stupid fucking horseshit. i can figure it out eventually but absolutely nothing is worth this waste of time
>>54261167
welcome to the world of free software, my friend
It's not like you have something better to do.
>filter google for the last month
>retards going on and on explaining about secure boot when the question wasn't even related
>still no answer, not even close
this is hilarious
>>54261167
sudo gedit $file
friend
i wouldn't even fucking bother with using linux as a desktop os but i'm prepping a dualboot laptop for dad
i don't even care anymore, i'm leaving it with xubuntu as default, i'm just venting about how retarded this is
>>54261294
that's what i did
the file is empty. even though is see it there
i used sudo nano
sudo nano does see the grub.conf in the first location, though
and it says
>hurr don't edit me, edit grub.d
because systemd right amirite guise? making 10000000000 answers on google INFUCKINGVALID
the file you're looking for is /etc/default/grub
you probably stumbled on to a help thread from more than five years ago
make sure the help is relatively recent next time
>>54261353
This
I'm as clueless as the OP and I edited my grub config file no problem. Set it to default the last booted OS
>>54261353
i found the correct file, the EXACT file that is mentioned in the grub.conf
i cd into the folder that contains it,
i type ls
i can SEE the fucking file, THE ONE MENTIONED IN THE other file
i type sudo nano grub.d, and BEHOLD, it's fucking empty
i'm done here
this isn't even about it being a recent search result, because this is what the file in the fresh OS says
>>54261394
>clueless
oh excuse me for not knowing some random-ass filename, location and method of resetting the grub config that some retard thought up
the point is that even googling for answers on google with the "last month" filter IS NOT FUCKING HELPING
>>54261167
Nigger, do you realize that you can change the UEFI bootloader order inside the UEFI boot order menu?
>>54261461
thanks for playing, but this is a dualboot on the same hdd on an older laptop with no UEFI
>>54261429
You should at least look at the date of the forum post before following the directions, you get no sympathy from me for being a dipass
>>54261167
It's a bit sad how easily you gave up on such a simple task.
>>54261477
Oh, well in that case all you have to do is boot back into Windows from Grub and install EasyBCD which will restore Windows Boot Manager as your primary bootloader
>>54261410
I gave you the full fucking filepath right there. grub.d is a directory. for other things.
I am being more patient with you than you deserve.
```
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:danielrichter2007/grub-customizer
sudo apt update
sudo apt install grub-customizer
```
>>54261167
linuxfags will try to convince you its because they do AWESOME STUFF which windows simply cant do
in reality, its just easier for then to script things, like their anime waifu moan .wav playing every time they left click, or its just to keep them distracted so they dont hang themselves which the majority of them wish they had the balls to do.
others use it because they have too.
>>54261515

first result i've seen and i dropped it just because of that fucking name
microsoft has this AMAZING feature for probably >10 years now
>>54261544
it's fine
>xubuntu has proper "install alongside windows 10" option right in the fucking installer
>can't add a fucking default graphical boot order manager
you people defending this, please get it through your fucking thread that this is not right
>It's a bit sad how easily you gave up on such a simple task.
how about i keep complaining until the autists add this as a GUI feature?
>>54261553
It's also the only way to do it, that also probably doesn't support other operating systems.
Good luck changing settings business-wide in less than a month.
>>54261599
the point really flew over your head, didn't it?
>>54261167
/etc/grub.d is a directory
>>54261626
then why the FUCK does grub.conf tell me to edit grub.d?
>>54261648
Because the files in it effect grub.
>>54261747

kek
there's nothing of use there either. really, i'm just leaving it as it is
what a piece of shit

We shouldn't have to spend 2minutes looking for a solution to a problem that shouldn't be there
>>54261648
because grub.conf gets generated from the stuff inside grub.d
>>54261353
> the file you're looking for is /etc/default/grub
this
OP, you're probably following an outdated guide
so if i go to an official ubuntu/xubuntu and complain about this and request the feature to be built in it will be of no use, because i'm sure thousands have already done the same
>>54261873
i'm following guides from 2016 and what the actual grub.conf file from the fresh download of xubuntu says. anyway, do you really not see the issue here beside my alleged retardation of not being able to "follow a "simple" guide"?
this is SHIT software design, that's the issue
>>54261814
>>54261832
I don't even use linux m8, but editing grub files is retarded easy and extremely well documented.
Also you must be completely retarded if you're blaming linux for this. You do realize windows doesn't support this at all right? Like if you install linux first and then windows it will just nuke the whole drive. So clearly this is the fault of linux, for even giving you the option of playing nice with windows and setting up a default boot loader for you.
Put it in >>>/g/sqt/ next time or gtfo
>>54261873
>following outdated guide
>looking into the actual files in the OS
why are there outdated files in the OS if what you're saying is true?
>>54261914
you know what, i used to edit grub just fine years ago before this systemd horseshit
>you must be completely retarded if you're blaming linux for this
haha
moron
>You do realize windows doesn't support this at all right?
even if the windows boot manager only supports microsoft systems, guess what. I CAN FUCKING MANAGE IT IN 6 SECONDS without going on a wild goose chase for god knows what fucking file that changes every fucking year
>>54261307
>i'm just venting about how retarded this is
At least you aren't trying to install it on an HP desktop/laptop. It is even more stupid.

@GreatEmerald thank you! After struggling with this issue all day on my HP Envy, your instructions were the solution. I'll be researching the next laptop I buy more carefully, and will avoid ones with this "feature".

no, it's just common sense to include a fucking select option in the settings GUI for the fucking default boot option, but apparently it's preposterous in autist-land
>>54262541
If you can't handle a bit of grub then just virtualise one of the OS and fucking get on with life.
I had this probelm too, there's an app in the store that can change your boot order. Wish I had found out about it like a year ago but oh well
on gentoo its /etc/default/grub
then grub2-mkconfig -o /boot/grub.cfg
never touched xubuntu..
git gud

Fedora used to have a GUI for setting the default boot, but that's probably long gone now that Fedora's systemd.
>>54261256
How does editing Windows or OS X bootloader configuration work?
>>54263382
I haven't done it in windows, but I have a great guess:
>some random settings window->"advanced" button
>"This program wants to make changes to: the hard drive on this computer"
>click OK
>"To continue, type the administrator password"
>enter the password
>get to another settings window
>click on the "boot settings" tab
>the tab contains literally no settings, but has an "Advanced boot settings..." button
>click the button
>a new window opens up
>select the "boot partition" tab
>click apply, close the window
>click apply, close the window
>click apply, close the window
>>54261167
you didn't Google hard enough, there literally is Linux software called grub customizer that can change the boot loader in 3 clicks
grubcustomizer giu ffs op.
