Yeah because 3TB SSD are $120
>>
Left. I have that exact drive and it is fantastic. HGST always.
>>
It shouldn't even be a question.
Just buy the fucking HGST.

HGST. Not even a question. Unbeatable reliability despite being acquired by WD.

Are you fucking dumb? Those hdds are specifically for storage, it even says "NAS" on the fucking box.

Impregnation, usually
>>
>>54259250
You get a buildup of pressure and premature failure. Hot air expands. HDDs heat up. There is empty space inside an HDD. There are delicate platters spinning very very fast inside an HDD.
>>
>>54259250
It would be very painful
>>
>>54258883
shhhhh..... don't tell 'em we can do that.

>>54259250
that hole is for adding coolant/lubricant.
you can also put cleaning fluid in there too keep the platters shiny.

Right is 5400

Left has some of highest reliability you can get

Left in a heartbeat
>>
>>54259988
For you
>>
>>54258684
WD Reds for storage, stuff you will never touch, also for NAS.
HGST if you will use the data on the HDD.
>>
>>54258684
Left is a bit more reliable but unless there's a 24 hour load they will both be the same
>>
Are the HDD prices waiting for SSD to be 1:1 to start droping prices?

I bought one of those like 6 years ago and it was the same price

Why fuck people keep buying them just to feed the happy merchant?
>>
>>54262636
Probably not soon.

They are a luxury and will be for a long time, they are too superior to HDDs, selling them for cheap would be stupid.

They should make cheap slow SSDs with storage in mind.

Why the fuck do you idiots keep going for 3 tb drives? Leave that garbage alone you fucktards.
>>
>>54263172
What the fuck is wrong with 3TB drives, they are the best ones in storage/price ratio
>>
>>54262689
They do have very high reliability. They're owned and made by WD now. Get with the times faggot.

>>54258684
OP I've got 5 of the ones on the right in my NAS and haven't run into any issues with them at all so far. If you're looking for a low-powered NAS/server drive, get the WD Red. Especially if it's just a media or file server.

If performance is more your concern, get the one on the left, but it will have a higher power draw and if you're just using it for file and/or media server, you won't really notice a performance benefit. But using it for something like a remote rendering storage or something - you'd probably find a good use for the extra speed.
>>
>>54262728
They're both NAS oriented drives, dumbass. There's also nothing buzzword about them - see how well your consumer drive fairs in a RAID array when one of them runs into error correction and doesn't have TLER in the HDD firmware.

Have fun rebuilding your RAID array.
>>
Why would a hkme user buy NAS stuff
Just go with the cheapest seagate
>>
>>54258684
I have the one on the left in my server. Pretty fast, though HGST has always been kinda loud for me during write operations.

You also have to remember that a WD Red (regular, not Pro) is just a WD green with TLER enabled for RAID support. So it's shit. Go with HGST.
>>
>>54263749
reliability. or lack thereof. the storage/price ratio goes out the window when you need to replace the drive. since their launch, drives of that size have proven to be the worst in terms of reliability. wd is the worst in that size, but not by much. just get 2 or 4 tb. forget 3 tb ever existed.

>>
>>54265196

what, are you so new that you don't know to stay away from 3TB drives?

2 and 4TB drives are the only thing worth buying right now for mass storage.

the ideal consumer system has a 'big enough' SSD and a 4TB 7200 rpm, 2TB 7200 rpm if you don't need as much. 1TB 7200 rpm drives cost as much as going out to eat and that's the bare minimum.

Worked at WD.

no shit that's what i'm referring to, that's what most 3TB drives sold are. they're cheaper. people buy them more. and they fail more. gotta get rid of them somehow.

Yeah, and you completely ignored that in longevity tests, other brands were fine. The Seagate 3TB models failed significantly faster than the other brands. The rest of their hard drives were fine, the 3TB models were notoriously failure-ridden.

desktar are reliable as fuck, more than 3 years running almost nonstop (only has been shutdown like 30 times) zero problems unlike my two 1 year old Seagate barracuda and WD blue.

WD Reds are trash. Had the 2TB version, died with less than a year power on time, got it replaced under warranty and the new drive only lasted for about six months, dying exactly a month after the warranty ended.
>>
>>54270291
Brutal senpai. I have 4x4tb WD red of which two have about 15k power on time and so far they're good, albeit slow.

Are the 2tb more likely to fail? I don't think I've come across any statistics for reds.

Air.

Helium drives will fail sooner than air as they can't vent.
That's why they're usually pushed toward to enterprise cold storage, replacement is expected.

>>54269023
Among other things, I have almost 150 GB of /tg/ stuff - and that's just PDFs. Obviously I could probably delete 90% of that since I'll never use those(and redownloading the ones I do end up needing after all would be a fairly simple matter), but why bother when storage is cheap.

Doesn't really mean shit in today's world. Just look at Seagate/Samsung.
You can find Samsung Spinpoints in Seagate Portable externals and Seagate Barracudas in Samsung desktop externals. Samsung Spinpoints are still made in Samsung's old factories, just with a Seagate sticker label.
HGST factories are still run by the HGST subgroup and WD hasn't really made any effort to swap their production lines over to those factories because retooling the factories in a declining HDD market makes no fucking sense.
