hello /g/. I come to you today with a genuine question and im honestly not shit posting. ive been running my current build for 8 years and its time to upgrade but i really am this out of touch now. which should i buy, AMD or Intel?

my current build is;

AMD Phenom 8450 tri-core 2.1ghz (i know)

Sapphire Hybrid CrossFire 780G motherboard

Radeon HD3650 512mb video RAM (yeah, this is my life)
now 2G PC2 8500 RAM because one stick shit out last week.

Been running this abortion for 8 years without too many complaints, but its time. im poorfag but my goal is future proof if at all possible. Do any of you upstanding members of society have any experiences or recommendations to share?

hold out for AMD's Zen CPUs if you can, otherwise intel.
>>
>>54247939
6600k 4.6 ghz here
10140 cpumark on my machine
2685 single threaded score

you decide what you need
>>
>>54247975
I saw they were coming out but that may not be until next winter before i can buy one, since i lost that ram stick its been painfully slow with this thing. ive seen some decent reviews about the fx series though
>>
>>54248051
is that i5?
>>
>>54247939
you could probably get amd kabini quad core and a mobo for under 100 that would let you surk, watch 4k, and shitpost better than that thing you have now. 8gb of ddr3 is like 30. Play games, probably not so much.

Buy AMD,
Keep being pleb and keeping the Nvintel prices low for us.

Fuck it. Go Intel/Nvidia

I've been Team Red for most of my life. Hyping up Bulldozer, and the Fury series. All my computers still run (4 of em, 2 in my apartment, 2 in my parent's house when I go home). But it's just undefendable anymore. They've refocused their efforts for mobile and console peasantry shit.

Go Intel/Nvidia for your build for the next 2-4 years, while AMD finishes up their mobile-gaming focused Polaris, Launch Vega, and then fix Vega. Because AMD can't make shit right first-gen

this

What's your budget
>>
>>54248147
Polaris is not exclusively mobile gaming, kid. 480/x is 1440/60fps at 150ish watts.
>>
>>54248063
Buy a replacement RAM stick and wait it out nigga. We're literally on the cusp of a major CPU release. At the very least you could get this gen's shit for much cheaper.

>>
>>54248129
i was thinking of that one, compared to other intel prices it didnt look like a bad power to cost ratio.
>>
>>54248194
nothing is set in stone, but roughly 600, if i go intel ill probably use on board graphics for a bit untill i can find a deal on a decent used card.
>>
>>54248239
problem with AMD (or any company really) is i never trust first gen shit. always wait a few months for the reviews to roll in.
>>
>>54248484
i should also mention im keeping my microATX case, hard drive and PSU
>>
>>54248147
>refocused their efforts for mobile

Intel is doing this full blast right now
>>
cheapest 'future proof' build you can do right now would probably be a cheap used sandy bridge cpu with appropriate mobo/ram and the best gpu you can buy (980ti currently, gtx1080 in 6 weeks)
>>
>>54248540
go intel. amd's current processors are so far behind its not worth it.

here's a part list i quickly put together to build off of.

absolutely get a new power supply indeed op. don't try to use your antiquated 8+ year old one.
>>
>>54249348
intel rules Desktops right now, mid range, and high range. Intel can do whatever the fuck they want.

AMD is the one scavenging for scraps of the industry while Team Red tries to get out of the bus
>>
>>54249381
i tried looking for used cpu's & mobo combo's. theres literally none where i live, let alone ddr4 support, which seems would be more future proof.
>>
>>54249445
Oh i had to replace the power supply almost 2 years ago, its a newer EVGA 500B. original one grenaded, but i gotta give it credit the main fan for it never worked and it wasn't until another fan in the case went that it finally cooked.
>>
>>54249424
why a 960 and why not a 380?

Thoughts? Not so sure about the clearance on that cooler though since its an mATX case.
>>
>>54248118
I vote for kabini or similar as well. Since you don't seem to need lots of horse power, just keep it simple. I run a AMD 5350 on MSI am1i with 12gb ram, ssd, and pico PSU. Turn off the fans at idle for complete silence and plenty of power to browse and do school work.
>>
>>54249572
Because 960 is a gimped POS that without driver optimizations will choke on newer games. 380 is better all around.
>>
>>54249771
i dont do that much gaming but i do have Beamngdrive, would be great to get smooth play out of that game, but it demands so much of your system.
>>
Another few months won't matter. Wait for AMD Zen and Intel Kaby Lake, then make a decision based on how each turn out. If Zen is as competitive as it seems to be, Intel may act aggressively on prices to compete, which would make it a very good time to buy a PC NM o matter which you get.

Bad
>How many times do ye have to tell you AMD's CPU's are bad? Get a 6600K
>Better yet, get a 4670K, should be cheaper, the motherboard should be too, you'll only lose less than 10% of the performance (and still be better than any AMD CPU(for gaming and single thread tasks (which is everything)).
>Most coolers account for case clearance, should be fine.
>Just get the cheapest RAM you can find. It all just werks.
>I'm not murrican, but over here the R9 380 is much better value for money than the 380X, it's sub $200 I think. also your PSU needs to have 2 six pin connectors.

>>54247939
Right now, the best build is an Intel CPU with an ATI GPU. That will likely change if you're willing to wait for the new amd cpus and nvidia gpus though.

6600k i5 and a 390 is just about the best performance/price there is right now if you're into video games.

>>54248540
Don't reuse an 8 year old, hard worn PSU with new equipment man.

Any high end Intel CPU today is future proof, there is no reason to wait for the AMD release. You shit is extremely outdated, you've waited long enough.

with intel, your hardware is never obsolete!
>>
>>54251042
The PSU is roughly only 2 years old, i bought it with upgrading in mind, and it definitely hasn't been abused.
>>
anybody have ideas on a good value GPU?
>>
>>54254149
wait for the new generation if you can. If not GTX 960 or R9-380
>>
>>54252072
It doesn't matter why high end intel CPUs are future proof, what matters is that they are.

The reason they're future proof is because intel has no competition in the x86 space.
Intel isn't competing with AMD, they're competing with ARM, so they're developing to get performance/watt up
