I just switched. It's nice and if you install a user friendly distro (*buntu, fedora etc) than it's pretty straightforward and you can't fuck it up.

Honestly if you haven't already switched than botnet is not a large concern for you. Do you have any other reason to go to linux?

I got Ubuntu dualboot on my SSD, but it lacks the software I need on my desktop and got OSX on my work laptop. Would love just to go Hackintosh on desktop too but I had to be a jew with AMD cpu.

That being said, performance wise, Linux/Unix flavors BTFO Windows for SAP usage. Windows has automatic memory management for SAP but that's about the main advantage (well, easier single-sign on as well).

Both IBM DB2 and Oracle outperform MSSQL handily as well (when installed on non-Windows OS).

I'm curious exactly what it is that you want to do on Windows 10 that you can't do on Linux.

Don't get me wrong, there are things. AutoCAD comes to mind. So does Photoshop. But it isn't exactly a huge portion of the population that needs to use those "industry standard" programs in order to make a living.
>>
>>54249827

Visual Studio, MS Office

I use both at least weekly.
>>
No reason to use Linux when Win10 with Classic Shell and Grid Move is the best OS available.

I pretty much only use Linux with an Xubuntu chroot on my Chromebook, and with a VM for testing a few things for work.

The only real use-case I have for Linux is on low resource hardware.
>>
>>54249848
You can't use those on Windows 7? You need Windows 10? (I realized I moved goal posts there, btw. Not attacking, just curious)

Also, Google docs and Libre Office both do the job of handling office docs.

As for Visual Studios, I'll grant you that necessitates Windows, so long as you are actually seeing money for using it, and understand your choice to stick with Windows in that event. But, moving goal posts again, is there a reason that necessitates 10 specifically?
>>
>>54247802
By now it's paranoid to think you're not tracked. How delusional.
>>

Windows 7 is deprecated.

>Also, Google docs and Libre Office both do the job of handling office docs.

They're shit and they mangle .docx. Also, editing in a browser is a meme.

10 is just the latest edition of Windows so I don't have any compatiblity issues.

10 is faster than Windows 7 so there is no reason to use Windows 7.
>>
>>54247751
I use both and you should kill yourself. Remember, down the road, not across the street with the razor.
>>
>>54249914
>Also, editing in a browser is a meme.

Except that it's not. I use it 40 hours per week for work.

>so there is no reason to use Windows 7.
Are you sure that's your stance? There's literally no reason whatsoever for anyone anywhere to not have 10 instead of 7?

It seems like an absolute, and I can think of plenty of reasons not to, from privacy concerns to the limitations of some people's hardware, to compatibility issues for some people.
>>
>>54249889

>Also, Google docs and Libre Office both do the job of handling office docs.

It's hilarious to me that this is what people actually think.

No, Google Docs and Libre Office aren't capable of handling linked sheets with all sorts of VB running in the background.

Docs, Libre Office, and Open Office are perfectly acceptable replacements for students and people that want to make bake sale flyers for the local Rotary Club.

They aren't anywhere close to replacing MSOffice in the workplace.

Same goes for Linux - way too much internal tooling that is Windows only, either VBA or C#.

And no, you can't use Windows 7 in any business that requires security audits or adhering to a security standard. Pretty much every industry security standard in the world requires using an OS "that receives regular security updates and patches" and mandates installing them within 30-90 days of release.

Windows 7 can't be used in tons of places because it breaks certification or industry compliance standards because it is past the Windows EOL.

What compatibility issues would those be?

You're advocating using an unsupported and depreciated 7 year old OS. The only compatibility issues are forward, not backward - Windows pretty much supports everything from the old iterations in the new version.

I switched to linux cause I quit playing games on PC. Had nothing to do with the spying stuff. Also I was tired of troubleshooting and repairing my PC and fixing any buggy software/firmware issues so I'm just using vanilla Ubuntu.

I'll probably end up selling off PC parts and getting a laptop either from Apple or another company that allows me to have linux installed and support. Probably Dell most likely since they have long warranties and allow linux laptops.

Using Windows 7 is honestly dumber than using a current Linux distro. Microsoft is dropping support for that shit, and you eventually won't be able to run any useful programs on it.

You don't need Microsoft's support to run programs. They actually are attempting to remedy this in Windows 10. Which is why people are sticking to previous versions.
>>
>>54250160
You didn't understand my point.

New stuff will be designed for Windows 10, not Windows 7, so it won't be compatible.

If there wasn't a single grain of truth in the memes, I would understand. Fuck, I would understand if the upgrade remained as an "optional update," rather than being moved to a "recommended update." I would even understand the "recommended update," if their terms and conditions were simple and easy to understand, rather than like the Terms of a credit card. Or, if the Terms stay the same, the "I do not agree" option explicitly states that disagreeing to the Terms will roll you back to the previous version.

I'd just like to interject for a moment. What you're referring to as Linux,
is in fact, GNU/Linux, or as I've recently taken to calling it, GNU plus Linux.
Linux is not an operating system unto itself, but rather another free component
of a fully functioning GNU system made useful by the GNU corelibs, shell
utilities and vital system components comprising a full OS as defined by POSIX.

Many computer users run a modified version of the GNU system every day,
without realizing it. Through a peculiar turn of events, the version of GNU
which is widely used today is often called "Linux", and many of its users are
not aware that it is basically the GNU system, developed by the GNU Project.

There really is a Linux, and these people are using it, but it is just a
part of the system they use. Linux is the kernel: the program in the system
that allocates the machine's resources to the other programs that you run.
The kernel is an essential part of an operating system, but useless by itself;
it can only function in the context of a complete operating system. Linux is
normally used in combination with the GNU operating system: the whole system
is basically GNU with Linux added, or GNU/Linux. All the so-called "Linux"
distributions are really distributions of GNU/Linux.

I installed Arch with AwesomeWM on my laptop to play around with as a hobby. In my shallow experience of using the OS, I won't be switching because:
- games. (Starcraft 2 and visual novels)
- texthooker and OCR software like kanjiTomo
- Epwing2Anki
- Mozc and Anthy is shit compared to Google IME
- I can't find a file browser comparable to XYplorer. Even clover for windows has double click to move up directory. Why doesn't Linux with all its amazing customisation have this.
- No Logitech Gaming Software to conveniently manage my G502's and G510 keyboard's macro keys on a per application basis
- Does it have something as good as Autohotkey, letting me customise keys on a per application basis?
- MS office

The last time I tried to use linux a clean install of it almost ruined my laptop
It ruined its read/write speed and the fan started spinning much much faster than normal all from using debian

I think these are the only windows applications I use that aren't available on linux now.

SSD Tool
MPC-HC
foobar2000

RivaTunerStatisicServer
BorderlessGaming
CheatEngine
daemontools (literally only for sega saturn CD mounting)

puNES
Project64
bgb
gambatte
KEGA fusion
SSF
nullDC
ePSXe
blueMSX

vidya

Clearly most of it is vidya related, but the first 3 aren't.

wincdemu mounting isn't supported through SSF, so it's useless for mounting sega saturn CDs. As I said, I literally only use it for that. Also, I use an older version that's before the botnet, supposedly.
