X is the window server, it just provides the basic drawing of windows.
A window manager is something like i3 or Openbox, that provides tools to manage those windows (tile them, minimize them, whatever). It uses X to do this.
A desktop environment contains a window manager and also a bunch of other shit, lock screens, taskbars, file browsers, settings panels, all that stuff.

True. The author is a former herbstluftwm user. Bspwm has the same system where you interact with the window manager with a commandline client. Bspwm allows for floating windows. It has a lot of extra features I don't really use, but I do use the nice query/event monitoring tools it provides for scripting. It also has a really nice rules system for setting up window layouts or doing whatever you want.
The hotkey daemon the author wrote is separate from bspwm (so it can be used regardless of whether you use bspwm) and is really nice.

I usually stick with a wm however. Only problem is with binary distros this often isn't any lighter because you can't build things without kde dependencies/gnome dependencies.
