I'd say I'm about a month from going to real arch, then a month or two more and I'll be on gentoo. By the end of this year I'll probably have moved to a *BSD
I'm afraid I might have contracted terminal /g/ from exposure to arch

I really don't get your point..

1) Install Mint
2) Google "first things to do after installing Mint"
3) follow insturctions

Wow, you are a Linux user!

Now if you are really really brave, open a terminal (don't worry you can close it with a mouse click anytime you want) and try some basic commands like "ls", "exit " or "rm -rf /" (don't forget the "/" here !).

And if something doesn't work you can still use "info [command]", "[command] --help" or just google it..

Congratulations, you are not a retard anymore.

if you ever want to try it on your own again, installing in a vm and using a popular distro with plenty of guides may help and you'll be pretty insulated from most damage you can do if you do something wrong

right, and how many people can say they were capable of installing windows and setting it up ootb before they ever used windows?

Basically all versions of Mac OS X over the years, can't be arsed listing them all individually. OS 9 is there too (and later than OS X) because I picked up an old Mac to screw around with Linux on PPC hardware, which required Mac OS to boot Linux. Damn NuBus PowerMacs...

I spent my entire life on Windows (3.11 to 95 to XP to 7), and hit the ground running without a hitch regarding mint.

https://sites.google.com/site/easylinuxtipsproject/Home

This was the first and last stop I made when researching whether to install mint, and what to do initially after installing mint.

I simply do not understand how someone with experience with Windows couldn't figure out how to run mint. I really don't.

which is comparable to most distro's installers, even for the slightly more complicated liveiso versions

my point was it's not intuitive to know what to do when something goes wrong when you have absolutely zero experience with the OS (i.e., the windows installer not listing any drives because there's a gpt partitioned drive attached to the machine, windows not having ethernet drivers, etc), it's fairly easy now as far as windows goes but in the xp days it was as much of a nightmare as it was for gnu/linux at the time

Why not trying both?
You can dual boot them:

Also "installing drivers" as you put it is much easier on linux than on win.

At the picture you see the update manager for Mint. Do you think you could handle it?

I fucking love dnf as a package manager and recommend trying it out. I find it so much better than pacman or apt, but that's just my opinion.

Also gnome looks great ootb, but I think my xfce looks a lot better after customizing.
