You're a retard, I can afford it. VR is a joke just like 3D. Unless you're in the game it's shit. Fuck playing with a controller, I mean it's better than not being able to play at all but VR is so overhyped it's stupid.

You don't keep it on the desk for VR--you mount it to the visor, and this is only the first generation of the technology.

I have one now and the detection is really phenomenal and immersive. By far the best control method I've used and about 10,000x better than waggle sticks.

A good developer could get a lot out of it.

The Wii was popular early on, and Microsoft & Sony rushed to copy the motion controls, but then it turned out that motion controls were just a fad, and nobody uses it anymore.

I predict VR will turn out to be the same. There just aren't enough normies who will want to strap a screen to their face.
>>
>>54219389
>The price point was a huge failure.
>The hardware requirements were a huge failure.
>Proprietary systems with online requirement and botnet features are a huge failure.
>Motion sickness is still a problem.

Then there is the huge learning curves devs must not only learn but develop from scratch to make anything interesting for the platforms.
I don't see any way VR will become common in less than 15 years. Till then it is just a gimmick for tech enthusiast.
>>
>>54219963
Im not worried about normies.
All VR has to do is get on the market level of steering wheels and hotas sticks till photorealism VR and cordless headsets gets here.
>>

>>

>The price point was a huge failure.
Some aren't bad, the OSVR at $300 sounds neat, and if it was better it'd be worth the money.
>The hardware requirements were a huge failure.
Most gamers have descent systems, doubt this is so much of an issue.
>Proprietary systems with online requirement and botnet features are a huge failure.
My major problem, OSVR, SteamVR, nVidiaVR, OculusVR. Pick a damn API, not doing the whole OpenGL/Direct3D crap again...
>Motion sickness is still a problem.
another reason I am scared of it, would suck to spend the money and have to sell it...

Heck I will add a few!
>Screen door
>limited FOV (90 degrees seems weak, scuba goggles all day)
>no idea what games it supports...
(seriously can I play Portal? Wow? Tomb Raider? only the low res indie dev games? Do I have to use a wrapper? does it depend on what VR system I have?

which brings up a whole different set of questions... but whatever
>>
>>54220378
>Proprietary systems with online requirement and botnet features are a huge failure.
That's the whole point of OSVR. Supports every headset and there are already OSVR<>Vive&Oculus wrappers that let you play "exclusive" content on the OSVR.

The real problem is a colossal failure of imagination among software developers. There just aren't visionaries today who want to deliver an inspiring product at a good value or even just free.

Everyone is looking for the low-effort, wide-appeal gimmick crap and DLC nickeldiming.

>VR is a joke just like 3D
no one said 3D is / was a joke. Its great tech, it just wasn't adopted by consumers (it will be though)
>>
>>54220452
This. They're using it to enhance the existing stuff.

3D movies failed because of the same thing.
>Wow, a 2D movie in 3D!
>Who cares?
Also, instead of 2D + depth it ended up being 2D + nausea. VR has full 3 dimensions of nausea, though, so I guess it's progress.

VR has great potential in simulations and I'd really like to have a VR desktop where I could have as much space as I need to do stuff on the go.
Obviously, it will be wasted on porn and gaymes.

VR is now a content platform like Amazon or Netflix, and has support for porn. It's never going away but will continue to be a niche product until manufacturing costs lower.

been using a Vive since april 6th.

shit looks stupid on a 2d screen. roomscale looks retarded when you see it on a video.

be in there. walk around something interact with it with 1 on 1 tracked controllers and you no longer give a shit about how it looks for you peasants without it.

It is amazing. even games that look like retarded children games like audioshield becoming immersive behemoths. all you do is stand there and use your hands(shields) to block colored blobs from hitting your face to the beat of the music. but you are in there you are a badas you are feeling like you are on top of the world. all this because of some sensory tricks and a screen wrapped to your face.

you can be negative about this all you want but once you've tried it things change. yes sitting in a chair looking at some platformer ala lucky tails on oculus is not going to be succesful.

walking around in a holodeck interacting with shit is going to be the future. In a few years now you will look back at this and laugh
>>
>>54221461
i had the vive since april 6th. tried as i might i cannot lose tracking on the controllers short of lying on top of it. i've crawled around in my living room looking retarded to the outside world and it doesn't matter when you're in there (be sure to close the curtains though)

you can call this a gimmick all you want but try for yourself it litteraly is 1 to 1 tracking.

it's nearly impossible to justify true presence to a cynical fuck like you because you read 1 part of an experience and base your entire point one that. blobs he must be crazy i'm right it sucks buyers remorse etc.

i wont waste time trying to convince someone who has already decided it sucks. go to a store near you where they demo the vive. try it out yourself. thats all i can say to you.

by all means post a source where people need to register to prove your point to make sure no one will read that article. gives you a very good basis for conversation.

meanwhile i'll just post a link that people can acutally read
http://www.gamesindustry.biz/articles/2016-04-20-superdata-downgrades-vr-forecast-again

yes its been downgraded to a whopping low 2.9 billion for this year. mostly cause of occulus causing ultra shit shipping problems.

wow VR is surely doomed. you are so right. 2.9 billion for first year release of an early adopter project is so horrible.
>>
>>54222146
it is doomed. Remember when journalists everywhere said that 3D was going to be inescapable? Well, that fizzled. This is the same, but even worse for the consumer.
>>
>>54222146
>Y-yeah it's the f-future

You'll get bored of your toy in a week or two, break it out for some Garry's Mod tier bullshit, then shelve it permanently.
Should move it to some other sucker while you have the chance.
>>
There's really no point arguing this. I have the vive, I love it. But if you haven't tried it, you probably won't understand or be quite skeptical. I don't consider it the same as 3D TV cause when I tried that I felt like it was shit.
>>
>>54222268
>>54222274

I get that you think this is the same as 3d screens. but for 3d screens people didn't say. you have to experience this for you to understand.
3d screens where readily availlable and its easy to show how they work and what it looks like on 2d screens.

For VR you are actually inside the environment. for the vive atleast you can walk around an object examine it from any angle in 3d it's not comparable to 3d screens.

its very easy to say that this will fail like that even tough 3d screens didn't blow people away. when you tried it people thought it was cool but it wasn't giving you presence in a whole different environment.

But like i said. Once you try it yourself walk around with a Vive and you'll notice for yourself this is not even close to comparable to 3d screens.
>>
>>54222324
Yup i honestly don't know why i even bother. people here on 4chan come up with the same sentence every time its like 3d TVs thinking they got it all figured out. Only way to show them what tis is like is strapping it to their face but they will never try it for the chance that they have to admit they are wrong.
>>
>>54222327
>For VR you are actually inside the environment.

I'm glad you resorted to this though since it just means you have no real arguements.

it's kind of like Godwins law for 4chan.

I just hope other users can see through this, i owe nothing to HTC if anything their support is utter shit, they handled shipping and credit card payments very badly. Maybe one day you wil get to try and see for yourself how it works. before the day 1 preorder customers get it.

To be honest you probably won't find any demos until a few months later when they are being sold in stores. Right now they are shipping out all the pre-orders, which was a ton and will take time. Hell the Vive sold 15,000 in the first 10 minutes going on sale. Give it time to reach stores.

VR is dumb as fuck, when are we gonna get some good AR advancement? Google Glass was cool technology but it had Google attached to it and its own fair share of problems; if anything, AR is the one in need of fine tuning and free money.
>>

i didn't bring up the business analyst as a form of proof. it was a reaction to a guy using the same kind of analitics to prove VR would NOT take off. i merely posted a version where you didn't have to register to view it.

I wouldn't put too much trust in them either. either it's going to work or not guessing the cost / benefit is never going to be accurate with brand new tech.

this all started because i was so tired of people comparing it to 3d tvs. i can understand why people think they are the same. but if you've tried the Vive you'll see what is different. it is very frustrating/difficult to convey how amazing a VR experience really is

Why do you guys want some glove or other motion control for VR. This is as stupid as Kinect and PSMove. Sure it looks cool and is probably super fun to play, for first hour. But no one will ever want to stay 6h waving his hands in some fast paced FPS.

More like, instead of doing budget crappy VR for everyone they decided to make high-end HMD.
I think it was pretty stupid move, consumers' computers aren't ready for VR yet, they will sell much less, developers won't want to make games for such a small market and whole VR hype will die.
On the other side they could release cheap VR for everyone, make HMDs popular and then release next generations, more and more expensive but better.
>>

It's okay that they sell less, because we will have to wait for good games and programs to arrive before it will take off anyway. Really good games, especially ones tailored for such a new and uncharted territory as VR, takes more than a few years to produce, in other words longer than modern VR has existed yet. So if Oculus uses this first generation to show that there is interest for VR even at such a high price, content creators will be convinced enough to invest the money to create AAA titles for generation two. And if Oculus also manages to price generation two cheaper, it will be a slam dunk and they will sell shitloads of units

I was always surprised that a babbie tier tech company like LEAP ended up making this based thing.
>>
I think that hologram stuff is way more interesting than the Oculus-type VR

This. AR > VR

If you want to see the fate of these machines, all you have to do is look at the Nintendo Virtual Boy. Big clunky device that gives you serious eye strain and makes you look like an idiot.

If the Virtual Boy came with a headstrap I bet people would've actually used it
>>
>>54226110
Yes, let's compare tech from the fucking 90s to today's tech. Not only that, but the virtual boy was less than $200. The Vive will likely set you back $2000 if you factor in the PC. They are nothing alike

The problem with those games is that the resolution is so poor that you can't see the next corner well or the ground from your plane etc.
>>
I'll buy it when there's a killer app. Do you hear me Valve? Make a VR game that I can't not play so I can justify spending that much cash on a headset. I want to buy it.

Half-Life 3 :^)
>>
>>54227588
It doesn't even need to be a Valve game. They just need to partner with someone to make something so good I can't ignore it.
>>

All it would be would be a museum-like building with the website on the wall, catalog style, and you'd throw up from trying to read the text versus a stable monitor not moving at all.
>>
>>54227481
who cares? VR is for porn, not games
>>
>>54219389
Oculus is the gimmick VR.

Vive is the actual VR.

If VR fails now, it will be because of Oculus being terribly mediocre.

i'm the "blobs" guy he was talking about and i think its pretty obvious now he's just a troll.
