Welcome to /fglt/. We are always open to users of all levels, including absolute beginners.

There are four ways to try GNU/Linux, you can:

0) Install a GNU/Linux OS on a VM (Virtual Machine/VirtualBox) for "safety purposes"
1) Use the Live ISO directly without installing anything, that way, you can get a "full GNU/Linux experience".
2) Dual-boot GNU/Linux with Windows/Mac (recommended if you want to learn more about GNU/Linux)
3) Go balls deep and overwrite everything with GNU/Linux

Before asking, please search for answers to your questions in resources.

Please be civil, notice the "Friendly" in every Friendly GNU/Linux Thread.

Understand that much of your software from Windows will be unavailable, although maybe WINE can make up for it.

Apologies, I jumped to conclusions and can't read.

It appears you have an ancient version of pkg-config in /usr/local/bin, and the installer is trying to use it. Removing /usr/local/bin/pkg-config should PROBABLY fix this and is PROBABLY safe. Alternatively, running `export PKG_CONFIG=/usr/bin/pkg-config` should also work.

None of those are Ubuntu specific. Hardware support is determined by the kernel. Most of the distributions ship a generic kernel, with as much hardware support enabled as possible (apart from the free distributions like Triquel).
The only thing which can make a difference is the kernel version. In your case there won't be much, since the latest Ubuntu ships with kernel 4.4 (compared to 4.5 which is the latest stable).

you don't need a config, just add compton with the right flags to your autostart. to test if it is good just run it and watch https://youtu.be/uNOKWoDtbSk?t=3m25s in mpv to see if it works.
to find out which flags read https://github.com/chjj/compton/wiki/vsync-guide

Mac OS has way worse hardware support than GNU/Linux. since you bought a computer specifically made to run mac os it's no wonder that specific laptop works with it. fortunately appe doesn't produce a lot of things themselves so the problems can be fixed.

What's the difference between using Kubuntu, and using Ubuntu with KDE slapped on?

Install Ubuntu 16.04.

kubuntu 16.04 should exist somewhere i guess. otherwise just aptitude purge unity-desktop(or however the metapackage is called) and install kde5-desktop. or do a minimal install and install kde on it. or go with a distro that has a better installer like debian netinst.

Which touchpad do you have? Did you try using libinput instead of the synaptics driver?
Do this to find out which one you're currently using. Note that the Xorg log could be stored elsewhere on Ubuntu. What does it say for your touchpad?

grep -i "using input driver" /var/log/Xorg.0.log

Either way, you can check out the available options for your device with xinput. It's explained on the Arch Wiki how to do it and make permanent.

What should I do if I want to switch to Linux but half of my vidya aren't supported by it?
>>
>>54223270
dual-boot, play other vidya or something, get creative.
>>
>>54223064

Try these two:
>install xserver-xorg-input-libinput
>remove xserver-xorg-input-synaptics
>reboot
>see if it works

You might also want to uninstall xserver-xorg-input-evdev and use the libinput driver for the keyboard and other stuff.

If just switching to the new driver doesn't fix it, run "xinput" and look for the ID of your trackpad (should be the bcm5974 thing). Then run "xinput list-props id". See if anything multi-touch is disabled or other options you want to turn on. Make sure to do this for the libinput and synaptics driver, because both expose different options.

Dualbooting is for cucks.

What does "best" even mean? Don't be one of those idiots who ask "what's the best X" and then just blindly use it because someone else told them to. There are plenty of standalone panels/taskbars to use. Check them out and decide for yourself. Tint2, lxpanel, xfce4-panel, the list goes on...

>>
>>54223777
I'd just like to interject for a moment. What you're referring to as Linux, is in fact, GNU/Linux, or as I've recently taken to calling it, GNU + Linux. Linux is not an operating system unto itself, but rather another free component of a fully functioning GNU system made useful by the GNU corelibs, shell utilities and vital system components comprising a full OS as defined by POSIX.

Many computer users run a modified version of the GNU system every day, but do not realize it. Through a peculiar turn of events, the version of GNU which is widely used today is often called Linux, and many of this userbase are not aware that it is in actuality the GNU system, developed by the GNU Project.

There really is a Linux, and these people are using it, but it is just a part of the system they use. Linux is the kernel: the program in the system that allocates the machine's resources to the other programs that you run. The kernel is an essential part of an operating system, but useless by itself; it is only operational in the context of a complete operating system. Linux is normally used in combination with the GNU operating system: the whole system is in actuality GNU with Linux added, or GNU/Linux. All the so-called Linux distributions are really distributions of GNU/Linux.

how huge is the stuff you usually compile?
make sure the mobo has proper hardware with free drivers and go for something like an i5 6600 or i7 6700 because they are good for cpu+igpu and have very good drivers.
just check the hardware support.
>>
>>54225092
Why exactly do you want a new PC?

I somewhat doubt your current one doesn't let you do the scripting/compiling, and movies should only be problematic if it's really old.

Now, if you know what's lacking, you know what you want from your new PC.

As for Linux compatibility, you can try and google your chosen parts + Linux. There isn't really much of guides out there.

As far as I know Ubuntu and kubuntu have the exact same repos

the debian repo is bigger and better. the ubuntu repo is basically debian testing with weird patches that make it break when updating sometimes.
debian can have stable in sources.list and stay on the stable release forever.

APT doesn't have a reliable way of upgrading to a different release.
Iirc ubuntu always adviced to do a fresh installation and keeping the existing /home partition.

With debian it's a less of a problem since you update releases every now and then, but with ubuntu's release cycle of 6 months it's always problematic.

for example older fedora's had a fed-up tool for handling this, recently they've switched to DNF's plugin "system-upgrade"
>>
>>54226978
I was told that debian is stable. All I want is a system that doesn't break THAT easily. What would you recommend?
>>

OpenSuse Leap
>>
>>54227043
>All I want is a system that doesn't break THAT easily
It's mostly up to the user.

Amazuntu and derivatives are *ok* for desktop use.
You did the mistake of upgrading between releases, which like I said - due to APT being garbage is not something that goes well.

If you're comfortable with Amazuntu, consider using LTS releases, they're maintained for few years, kernel/xorg/systemd version are upgraded rarely (mostly security backports) making system failures less often.

openSUSE leap adheres to a similar philosophy.

If you want a very up-to-date distribution that you should forget about anything APT based.
Try Fedora. DNF is great. I've been running the same installation since Fedora 20 (now Fedora 23) and upgraded between releases with no problems at all (Well just one, I had cmus installed but It doesn't exist in rpmfusion repositories anymore, so it refused to continue until I removed the package)

then install the kernel you desire by
dnf install kernel-<yourpreferredversion>

If the kernel version you desire doesn't exist you go
http://koji.fedoraproject.org/koji/packageinfo?packageID=8
download the kernel version you want and install it with

dnf install ~/your/download/path/kernel-version.rpm

Good luck.
>>
>>54227293
Bear in mind that Fedora by default keeps few the current kernel and the last two (iirc) releases so even after updating the kernel in case something goes wrong you can just boot the previous (or 2nd previous) version from GRUB.

lmao how.
if drivers for linux exist - they're included in the kernel (if they're licensed under a free license) or as a kernel module (if they're binary) in a standard distribution.

What "different" drivers?
Could you post a link to them?
Installing drivers is really putting a .bin firmware file in the correct directory and loading a proper module with modprobe.

>Even before then the keyboard and trackpad were only half-working
Could you elaborate? Half working meaning what, half of the keys weren't working?
Both external and internal laptops keyboards on 99.999% consumer laptops/desktops are generic USB devices.

Why isn't there any goddamn distro that has a satisfactory set of features?
I'm looking for:
-no systemd
-binary package manager (some source compilation is OK, but the whole thing being source-based is just too tedious)
-(preferably) muh freedums (either FSF-approved or easy to block non-free packages)
-(mostly) up to date (no debian wheezy w/o nonfree repos, for example)

I'm tempted to look into Slackware, but Frugalware is also looking nice (worried about support, though). Any suggestions from you, /fglt/?

Again, I'd be OK with something non FSF-approved, as long as it's easy to tell if I have any non-free software installed.

I've used Manjaro OpenRC before for a bit as well, but the difficulty of distinguishing free from non-free software without researching licenses for every package on the system is less than convenient.
>void might be the best bet.
I've considered it, but again, no easy way to check if there's non-free software. It's a little more reasonable to hand check Void (fewer packages installed on a fresh install), but still not the most favorable thing.

Looks like my options are either stick with Parabola w/OpenRC, or switch to Slackware/Void and be mindful of the packages I install.

Having some trouble using a webm convert script with mpv https://gist.github.com/Zehkul/25ea7ae77b30af959be0

When ever i try to make a webm I get this error:

I'm not really sure how to fix this. The source is just a standard anime.mkv

Duh. I completely forgot about that wiki page. Must've slipped my mind.
I'll give it a try. Thanks for the input!

>no systemd

Why? You still have all the bloat of udev in the form of eudev, freedesktop.org's X server with all its bloated extensions, polkit/consolekit, and so on

All the arguments against systemd apply to other freedesktop.org software, and also the kernel itself

Everytime I open firefox this black screen shows up.

Any ideas?

Try resetting your monitor res.
>>
>>54231953
Naw it's a gtk/X.org bug

The same thing happens to me with firefox and other gtk programs, but the window quickly resizes over the black space

I'm glad this thread exists in perpetuity.

As soon as I've given up on something after an hour or two and start typing my question and admitting my failure as a human being, I figure it out and backspace out my post.

So thanks /fglt/, sort of.
>>
>>54231929
Yeah, bloat is inescapable with that sort of thing.
It's more the iron grip systemd is holding over modern distros (and the GNOME desktop environment) that leaves a bad taste in my mouth, I guess.
>>
>>54232004
Systemd is only holding a grip over distros as the default because DEs depend on it

Kind of like all the other freedesktop.org crap. A lot of other software has been phased out in favor of redhatware.

Systemd is just another one. Only caring about systemd is ridiculous. Oh yeah, after device management and ACPI fell, we only care about init.
>>
>>54231929
>All the arguments against systemd apply to other freedesktop.org software
They really do. All that overly bureaucratic xml loving xdg shit isn't welcome on my pc.
>>
>>54232129
the systemd scare is a false flag to distract users from the real problems underlying typical ganoo/linux userspace so more redhatware can move in with the benefits of not being integrated with systemd

>guys, you can use wayland without systemd, no need to use UNIX-compatible X anymore. X was bad because our implementation was bloated. That means X was bad, period.
>>
>>54226615
You start it and select your resolution. If that id too much just type xrandr into a terminal and show us the output.
>>
>>54218427
Make a Gnu/Linux that can play up to date games, then we can talk about your shitty OS.

So what system monitoring and info tools do you guys use?
Ive installed
Conkey
screenfetch
Htop
Psensor
CPU-G
top by default

I have also read the arch program list on things like this. What do you guys suggest?

Standard web dashboard thing. Very performant considering how much shiny graphs and shit it has.

What's the fucking point of autossh if it doesn't always try to reconnect?
I rebooted my VPS and get this shit when I get home. What the fuck?
Last line was command I ran.

Fuck it, bash loop it is.

>>54233259
Should work just fine. Although udev (at least on debuntu) will give you new network device a new name so you should delete /etc/udev/rules.d/70-persistent-net.rules then reboot.

How do I get a bootscreen like this in my Arch installation?
>>
>>54233870
It is probably in the knoppix initramfs so have a look in there and see what they are doing.

Really. Does no one on latest ubuntu want window controls on the right side? What fucking sheeplings and macfaggots they appear to be.
>>
>>54227043
I've run debian stable for years and years on multiple servers and never once have I had things break apart from systemd faggotry at 7->8.
>>
>>54234237
First thing I did is uninstall ubuntu-session and install cinnamon. I haven't even seen that monstrosity aside from the weird gedit bug I got, but reinstalling gedit fixed it
>>
>>54234237
Maybe there are no fags here running unity. I heard that there is a unity tweak tool, have you looked into that?
>>
>>54234257
7->8 what might I ask? Is systemd rough to work with or is it just something you gotta know?
>>
>>54226129
IIRC KDE 3.5 could put them either side or center...

But you know options are literally Hitler.

I'm a Lubuntu noob.

My trackpad is highly sensitive. When my palm hits it while typing, it registers a click.

I've tried a couple of terminal commands including synclient MaxTapTime and xinput --set-prop "SynPS/2 Synaptics TouchPad" "Synaptics Noise Cancellation" 20 20, but nothing seems to do the trick.

Any ideas?
>>
>>54234316
dude, I've used dozens of distros in twenty years. I've used debian for the last 10 years. Haven't tried ubuntu since they forced unity down everyone's throat, but now decided to try it out. And guess what, it's appears to be pretty good as a daily driver. How many years it took? Five?

But I'm not going to keep unity installed if I can't move my window controls to the right.
>>
>>54233870
If you're talking about the tux icon, it's from linux. It's in the framebuffer configuration options.

I don't know if it can be built as a module. If it can, I don't know that arch has it.

I can't get f.lux to work on linux.

I've made it a startup application so this pic related shows up every time I log in, however absolutely nothing happens when I click preview or put my geolocation.

I know redshift exists but my eyes are accustomed to f.lux so I'll insist on it for now.
