I'm torn between XFCE and KDE. I'm running kubuntu now that 16.04 came out and plasma 5.6 is finally stable on it. I'm liking it so far, but I'm just used to XFCE. I'll probably stick with kde for a while.

Eh, having shit like screen snapping showing a preview and not just doing it on it's own, windows being transparent when moving, and an icon-only taskbar set up by default are nice. I know XFCE can do all of that (once dockbarx gets updated at least), but it's nice having everything just werk ootb.

Unity.
Fuck GNOME Shell's absolutely abysmal performance.
KDE is pretty nice though.

As for Xfce, I fail to see its purpose.
If you want your DE to be lightweight, there are better options available, such LXDE, LXQt or standalone WMs such as OpenBox.
If you want a feature rich desktop, there is GNOME, Unity, KDE, Cinnamon, Mate etc.

This is for multiple architectures.

thats a dock.
A launcher is a small tool that lets you search for applications and do minor actions that doesn't require a UI other than a a autocomplete.

Like when you want to calculate something, you don't want a full UI.
Or when you want to switch to a window, you don't want to navigate the mouse to the right location.

That is what I meant by launcher

Gnome. I tried mate, but felt that the top and bottom bars were too thin, and that the file browser window top area had too many layers of icon rows stacked on top of each other.

Not a huge fan of gnome, but I somehow wasn't able to completely uninstall mate so I'm afraid of cluttering up my harddrive by trying any more desktop environments...

xfce is a good middle ground between feature heavy and minimal. KDE is too flashy for me. I can't comment on lxde, but lxqt was nice for the few days I used it. Mate and cinnamon are also nice, so I guess it all comes down to personal preference.

I use unity rn and I am constantly saying "oh I missed this in xfce," but stock Ubuntu "just werks" more often than not.

For example, xfce had brightness slider for my laptop, but the Bluetooth manager was shite.

>The default font is terrible, I remember Gnome 2.* had better fonts

>Try to find other computers in my network

>How can anyone know this without previous experience?
>Just to check search on Google on how to connect and I'm on some Ubuntu wiki telling me to type some cryptic commands in the terminals which are wrong because it doesn't tell me to create the directory needed for the mount command

Is Linux regressing?

I remeber back in the Gnome 2.* days the UI was fast, many themes out of the box, customisable everything

I also remember the users wanted to keep things simple, now the trend on tech related boards, youtube, etc is to add complexity
