Get a thinkpad x60(s)
They are cheap, small/lightweight, great gnu/linux support, very nice screen, supports libreboot fully, and you can shitpost/program. Whats not to love?

Shitty screen (colors, angles)
Shitty resolution (1024x768)
Shitty build (want to change thermal grease on cpu? Have fun flipping that mobo nerd lol!!)
Plastic on those cracks in multiple places, I don't know why but it does.

t. X61 owner, don't fall for this meme people. It works and it will serve you for years but you will be embarrassed to bring it anywhere in public.
Get X200 instead, less shitty, and supports libreboot too.

Personally I think mine is really nice, some model thinkpads have different style screens, and the main reason I said get a x60(s) is because OP asked for a 'cheap' machine. Also what do you mean cracks in multiple places? I've had my x60s for ages and the chassis is in great condition and I use it as my daily driver.

It means what it means, my palmrest cracked near the right bottom corner. I've looked over auctions for replacement and noticed this defect happens quite often. Other "vulnerable" places include ribs on the cpu vent holes and express card reader (I think). Bottom line is, X60/X61 are actually not nearly as well built as some people think. There is plenty of laptops, including other brands (hp elitebook, dell latitude) that are more strudy.
Worth mentioning that I never mistreated my X61, never dropped it and such.
Overall it's not a bad laptop but I would pick x200 over it any day.

You must be one of those hipster javascript "programmers" who can't for the sake of literally holy mother mary herself program a single line of useful code. I can imagine your skeleton fingers on top of your shitty ultra mobile keyboard doing low tier webdev shit bloating the internet a little more -thanks for killing the only good thing left feaggit - only to impress whally the landwhale mistress with her neon blue pink hair who haven't shaved her armpits since Adam's exodus of Eden. Fuck you little creep are fucking disgusting me. But one thing is for sure buddy, you can't code your skinny lil wiener into her soaking sea depth. Do you comprehend that?! You won't trigger her cherry with your handy keyboard and your "programming" skillz since your not even in the slightest resemble a male form! The Asus EEE 900A is pretty good, though it might be a bit bigger than you are looking for if you want something pocketable. Also, while the keyboard is large enough to use like a normal keyboard, it's small enough that I can hold it by the sides and use my thumbs for a lot of the hotkeys that I use, making it extremely comfy to use while reclined in a chair.
>>
>>54203629
That looks interesting and with unlike the Zipit Z2 appears to have enough RAM to actually do something with (64 MB vs the Zipit Z2's 32 MB). What would be the best way to acquire one?

>>
>>54205783
Well, looks like I got the RAM wrong, it only has 32 MB of RAM same as the Zipit Z2, it also lacks any wireless connectivity (though you can apparently use some USB adapter). On the other hand, the Ben Nanonote uses entirely free as in freedom hardware released under the GNU GPL. It seems the only way to get one though is to import it from IDA Systems in India, where they cost ~$60 new (doesn't say how much shipping is).

Wut? I'm the anon who posted the Asus EEE and even though the thing has specs worse than my phone (same RAM and a significantly worse processor) it runs better than my phone ever did due to me being able to pick programs that don't hog tons of RAM while still running full desktop programs instead of dumbed down "apps" with features stripped out. Just Android on my phone with anything unnecessary stopped uses more RAM than my install of Linux+my browser+my email client on my netbook, while still having support for security updates unlike my phone.

Beats Droid 3 in everdyay use (droid have enormous advantage of easily accessible special characters, perfect linux keyboard), beats HTC Universal and its enormous slab of comfiness, beats Blue Angel, beats Desire Z (that's beaten by Droid 3 anyway).

God damnit I want one. Why cant the developers upgrade it to at least 64MB of RAM so I can use a graphical web browser or 128-256 MB of RAM so I could use something that would support javascript? At least the lack of wifi problem can apparently be solved with SDIO cards. Hopefully shipping isn't to much. Wonder if it would be possible to pull out the LCD and replace it with an E-ink display.

this is actually the best answer. i have the c300m and its great. i cant really go below 13.3", its my ideal size as it is.

i also have the toshiba CB2 and that is also a solid option. 2GB of ram as well.
>>
>>54210746
also x86.

and you can chroot a DE environment next to the chromeOS if you dont want to flash a bios or do a fresh install. its really simple and leverages all the custom bullshit/drivers/whatever already present from chromeOS.
>>
>>54210811
>chroot
Why do people talk about this like it's meaningful? You just end up with two OSes consuming resources instead of one and might as well have went with an older, cheaper device.
>>
>>54203629
What type of ARM or x86 processor is the processor in that thing comparable to?
>>
>>54210889
because the resources used are only above trivial (because so much is shared) and its FAR easier than a bios flash and bare metal install.

its a lot easier to just plop xubuntu down on top of chromeOS than it is to walk yourself through the other method. its also reversible. all around its just less complex, and that is a huge plus for people new or inexperience with linux
>>
>>54210889
>cheaper
>older

why would i want some old chunky tank of a machine when a cb is light and easy to use. and its plenty powerful for the tasks OP is talking about.

even if i just ran chromeOS and didnt install linux, its still a superior choice for all of the mentioned criteria.

and cbs are like $150-300 new.
>>
>>54201417
I write Haskell on my phone all the time, just don't use a shit language that requires large amounts of boilerplate code and has an overly complex syntax.
>>
>>54201577
i would use this as a daily driver phone if it were a bit bigger and ran stock android.

does such a phone exist? i heard the latest blackberry was poorly made.
>>
>>54211002
>older = bigger
Except that's wrong, a lot of older netbooks from back before the thin=small craze are actually smaller than newer "small" laptops. My Asus EEE 900A is smaller than any Chrome book I'm aware of and about a full pound lighter than the models listed here >>54210746.

>>54206124
>T-Mobile will never make a Sidekick Smart Phone
>>
>>54211207
yes, that is true in the case of some netbooks.

but then you are dealing with a clearly inferior machine.

i guess thats a personal preference thing. id rather carry something with a chassis like a magazine than a chassis like a dictionary, even if it is a bit lighter.
>>
>>54210946
Found the answer myself and decided to report back. It's comparable to the original Iphone which used an ARM11 clocked at 412 Mhz. For desktops, it's comparable to a 200 Mhz Pentium Pro and the PowerPC processor in the original iMac from the late 90s.
>>
>>54211226
The world is a sad place sometimes...

But seriously... A sliding landscape qwerty keyboard... About the same
general dimensions as the original moto x and I would sell my LG v10 (and my wife's too likely) without a second thought.

Bonus points for a old blackberry style trackball haha.
>>
>>54206124
Landscape sliders are objectively worse than solid portrait ones. That's why palm and blackberry have portrait keyboards for adults and budget t-mobile garbage has sliders for retarded children

The one in that picture is running Archbang, though any minimal install of Linux should work well. If I ever start having problems with it I'll probably move to Debian. The most important thing is using lightweight software, like just a window manager instead of a full desktop environment and a lighter browser (I'm currently using Palemoon) as netbooks generally have limited amounts of RAM and some had very limited hard drive space. If you really want Windows, supposedly Windows POS 2009 is still supported and you can find codes for it.
