Just wait, polaris (amds) is coming out in a few months. Everything dx12/vulkan is using Asynchronous compute and the perfomrnace diffierence is huge. Also, nvidia can't do Asynchronous compute so the gtx970 stutters like shit in dx12/vulkan (like quantum break for example) while lesser amd gpus perform better. Nvidia bet on the wrong horse, and amd capture the console market and with vulkan the devs will solely focus on that as well as moving it back to pc.

Many people also have a Mac, why don't you get one as well?

People in general are stupid. Those who brought a 970 even after knowingly being fucked over in ram by nvidya are just retarded fanboys. Don't be another retard buying meme card just because it's popular.
>>
>>54201499
> Anyone who wants to play DX12 games are shit out of luck as well even the new 1080 series doesnt have async compute.

I won't be so quick to judge the 1080 series. Lots of things are fixable. Nvidia actually pushed for async back then but then dropped it for whatever reason.. probably to save money.

But I do agree with how current nvidya cards suck balls for DX12.
>>
>>54201399
How's AMD drivers? I heard they fuck up often. I also do GL stuff on Linux and I know AMD distributes fuckall for Linux drivers.
>>
>>54201547
That's fair, but again the problem is that AMD owns both PS4 and Xbox oner (and nintendos NX is using amds gpu).

Furthermore, polaris is being used on the PS4.5k coming out which has improved async performance, and all games going forward well take advantage of it including when its moved back to pc.
>>
>>54201059
> I checked the archive before asking this question and more posters on this board have 970 than 960

Next time, instead of researching what's popular, you should just research benchmarks or frame tests.

For starter, go to digital foundry and look up frame rate videos.

Not having Hardware Async Compute cant be fixed by driver magic they are absolutely Fucked

Ashes of the Singularity may be a older game but the benchmarks perfectly prove how useless Nvidia GPU's are for current and next generation DX12 games
>>

> Not having Hardware Async Compute cant be fixed by driver magic they are absolutely Fucked

I'm not saying they will fix it with a driver, I'm saying the 1080 series isn't even out yet and we don't know exactly what is in it yet. And I believe nvidia won't make the same mistake on that. I think they will put hardware async on their new line of cards.

Nvidia fags are in denial.

i just tried to play Quantum Break with my 4gb 770 oc and it was murdered couldnt even keep up 30fps same as ashes of the singularity.

I cant wait to get a 490 and crash nvidia come june
>>
>>54201754
Well i do hope they have it for competition sake, cause honestly if they don't... its an amazingly dumb decision. Async is the next step of GPU future. Being able to use multi threads to properly render at the same time is going to give huge advances in framerate and also sync time which is needed for VR.
>>
The 970 isn't worth the $300-350 at all. Get the 390

>>
>>54201871
The 290 is known to be relatively unreliable and riddled with defects desu.

Best to save up for a month or two and get a new card that suits your needs, or better yet deal with it until the new cards are released.

>>
>>54200827
Why would the price rise?
>>
>>54202210
I've got the money, but refuse to spend it on a new card now. I mean, 980ti would be overkill, 980 is terrible price/performance wise, 970 is gimped. The 390 is based on 5 year old technology, the 380 is already too weak performance-wise to keep modern games at 1080p and 60fps.
So, all in all it's a shitty situation.
>>54202213
Would be nice, then I only need to decide between AMD and nvidia. Both kinda suck at the moment.

>5 years old

>muh 7970/7990
So? If its a good base why not keep it?

Its exactly what nvidia did with the 600 series

Ironically even the oldest GCN had async compute Nvidia fucked up badly by not adding hardware async in the 900 series and it shows the 700 series was just a rehash of the 600 series like t he 900 series brah
>>
>>54202219
Which is why I said I'll wait
>>
It's "worth" getting an R9 380 over a 960, especially if you're going for the 4GB version. It's cheaper, and better. 390 > 970 also.

That being said, unless you are unable to stuff right now, this is one of the rare times where waiting may actually be the right call. Not to buy new stuff because on launch there's usually a very high premium, but because when it does launch the old stuff usually gets heavy discounts.
>>
>>54202334
I doubt their will be a 3rd Gen VR

We will probably see 4-8k VR but if the games and interest isnt there it will fade away like it did previously.

i still remember the 3D glasses push and that died almost as quick as the hype for avatar sequels.

Basically their only good application is for Sims and anything else that benefits from high refresh rates.

Save your money and get a 27" QHD or 4K display for like $400
>>
>>54202374
I think VR will change. Right now it's really fucking unique and great. Vive is amazing. What they failed to realize, though: Most people play games to have fun and relax. If you can't play the game while sitting down, you're not going to do it for long.
I mean, there will be an audience for that, like Wii Fit people, laser tag fans and so on, but the comfy PC chair / couch crowd won't really flock to the Vive.
>>
>>54202371
>AMD
>>
>>54202428
Vive needs like a 8x10 room to be fully usable though its not really suited to poorfag gamers or basement dwellers like me with a cluttered 3x6 room

That said if the vive 2 came out and was worth the weight (sorry) 4k and had no tracking niggles and was only say 500usd i'd jump at it just for sims alone but it has no support or sims.

a shame because i was really looking forward to 4k+ VR just purely for racing sims
>>
>>54202300
>the 390 doesn't profit from better yield rates
>>
>>54202613
So?

Thats like saying the 490 will have shit yield because its 14nm which it wont

Besides shit yields is more of a nvidia thing

Kepler anyone?
>>
>>54202610
Yeah, even rich people usually have stuff in a room. Only very few people will have either an empty room or a room they can repurpose in order to enjoy the VR at its fullest. It's ... a lot of work. Doable, sure, but it requires a lot of involvement and preparation.

I'm looking forward to seeing how the headsets themselves will evolve. How I'd be able to use one while sitting down and still get the 'VR experience'.
>>
>>54202635
i actually meant the whole refined production process hence the 390 uses less wattage at higher clocks. it's not like it simply has been relabeled
>>
>>54202300
>Nvidia fucked up badly by not adding hardware async

I hadn't really thought about it before, but this is kind of odd considering ATI built tessellation into their GPUs in 2001, long before Nvidia did. The ATI team has been pretty good about adding good features. I wonder why Nvidia didn't think this one was a good addition
>>
>>54202647
so basically what you want is a occulus rift but facebook can get fucked.
>>54202650
we wont be hitting 10-5nm until 202x at least
>>
>>54202663
Because they are cheapskates

NVIDIA recycle 5year old cards and just reduce the manufacturing process.

They used to have good drivers but now they have neither a good base for new cards (Pascall fucking sucks and they know it hence the sperging out about async benchmarks) and now their drivers are horrible since 364

i havent seen them fuck up this bad in over 6 years.

its what made me get a 6970 and now a 490
>>
>>54202151

My 960 and 5800k APU (kek) runs ark SoTF on the setting just below the max which would be named "epic". I think it's either "high" or "ultra".

Runs at about 32-50 fps max below 60ish and 24 min which would be just at the start where all the particle effects are when you drop down into the center starting area.

GTX 960 Price: ~$190
GTX 970 Price: ~$320

Assuming your primary use is video games, you yourself can answer the question if the increase in performance is worth the price difference.

Go look up more benchmarks so see the differences in performance
>>
>>54204847
Especially considering you can get a 290 that assblasts it cheap second hand. Or just get a 380.
>>
A ref 290 is $200 which trade blows with 970, actual 4gb, and full dx12 support. It is also does twice the performance of the 960.

It will take 10+ years for the 290 to equal the 970 in price.

AMD is no longer releasing fglrx support, if that's what you're asking. The OpenGL features on the radeonsi and radeon drivers are nearing compliance with 4.4 at the moment, so you're not losing out on shader features, that's for sure. In terms of performance and power profiles, on Linux especially, it's still a mile ahead of nouveau. AMDGPU-PRO is the binary being released right now to support the latest AMD GPU hardware on Linux and it's improving quite quickly, even though a lot of people seem to think that nVidia is the de facto for gaming on Linux. Just run DRI3, the latest versions of Mesa and LLVM.

On Windows the driver gap isn't big at all. It is expected that AMD lags somewhat behind on the later GPUs, like the Fiji GPUs seem to still need performance tuning to get up to par.

Bought a 960 a year ago. I only wanted to play GTA and I've moved to Linux since September 2015, full time.

960 is a very nice htpc card, h.265 HW accel, 970/980(ti) can't do that plus quiet and less power hungry.

Plus, it's well supported in Linux or OSX, should you want to go hackintosh.

For the price, it's great but for performance, you should look elsewhere or wait.
