Yes they know. They've got their core userbase, now they're trying to position themselves as a serious competitor to BTN, and the only way they can even begin to do that is by shutting their doors to some extent. It's very unlikely they'll recruit you based on anything other than their specific requirements, only way I can see you getting considered on an individual basis is if you're an encoder.

Which isn't to say there aren't excellent users on /ptg/, but without at least a vetting of posters from here before inviting them (which I can already see being interpreted as an attack on privacy) there's just no real way of ensuring you're getting the ones who will make an effort on your site. If staff actually monitored every account regularly it'd take up much more of their time (tougher for smaller sites because of their often smaller staff roster), so they play the safe route and ensure a slow and steady increase of users, and content.

The problem with private trackers in principle is that filesharing is ostensibly about the freedom of information. We flout the establishment's intellectual property laws and their attempts to imposition us. Data's true nature is to be free, it's why piracy is as rife as it is, why the various P2P networks are so popular, why when one dies, ten rise in its place. It's also why many private tracker internals find their way into more public forums. Private trackers are a step backwards in this argument and seriously inhibit our ability to justify what we do. They're simply the most effective solution to what is a really shitty problem. But knowing what we know it's hard to not use them. I make a point of sharing as much as I can with friends and on public forums.
Can I blame private tracker operators for doing things the way they do? I don't know. I don't know what else we're supposed to do. It just doesn't sit right with me, and I do feel that they are hypocritical as a result.
