It definitely sounds like you've got something in there. Your best bet is going to be to soak it in hot, salty water for an hour or so, then press firmly on either side of the cut. While holding pressure, probe around in there to see if you can find the foreign object.

If it's a small shard, it will be as easy for it to move deeper in as out, which is the "hornet" feeling he's describing when he puts weight on it the wrong way. It will reject out eventually on its own, but I had a piece of glass in my heel for months once.
