Whenever I run into one, they always seem to have a thinkpad from 2007-2009 and they go on about how Macbook owners are sheep while being completely oblivious to displaying exactly the same behavior.

Not exactly. Of course, things will vary greatly by class and university. I go to a small but very high quality liberal arts school and am a CS major. My class sizes are all pretty small; 40 at most in a CS class (80 in the lowest level physics or psychology classes). Professors will always make the code they're running in class available on the course page because they don't want people copying down syntax.
Furthermore, in my own experience people using computers to take notes are almost never just taking notes. They're almost always on facebook/imessage/reddit as well or exclusively.
More intense classes seem to command more attention: math classes, algorithms cs classes, etc.

My first computer was the black macbook before this one, and I would have had it longer, but my mom lost it. I like mine a lot. It crashed (with no survivors) in 2012 (but I was actually able to recover almost everything), and it's been fine since then. I like the disc drive, and I actually hear about a lot of friends' newer macbook pros/air/whatever crashing.
I'll definitely consider other brands when I do get my next computer, but for now I'm quite happy.

Probably. I got both a engineering physics degree and software engineering degree and everyone used pen and paper at both places. In engineering physics everything was written by hand. No computers or calculators anything. And for software engineering we had classes in computer labs. And we generally stayed in the labs until our assignments were done so we could go out partying on our free time.
