Other business laptops are also welcome in /tpg/ (e.g. Dell Latitude/Precision, HP EliteBook/ZBook).
----
If you're looking for purchase advice, READ THE BUYERS GUIDE FIRST. Then post, stating budget and requirements (e.g. size and performance).
Don't buy anything OTHER THAN T, X AND W/P SERIES if you want the Real ThinkPad Experience™

Recommended models:
T420 - 14", normal size
X220 - 12.5", lightweight
----
Why ThinkPad? (also applies to other business laptops)
>Used machines are plentiful and cheap.
>Excellent keyboards - tactile feel and quiet.
>Great durability: chassis uses a magnesium rollcage for structural integrity, with high quality plastic body panels.
>Utilitarian design: e.g. indicator LEDs, 7 row keyboard layout on older models.
>Docking stations that easily turns your laptop into a desktop.
>Easy to repair, upgrade and maintain thanks to readily available service manuals for every model. Spare parts are easy and cheap to obtain.
>The best trackpoint (that red thing in the middle of the keyboard). Great for those who type a lot or hate swiping their fingers all over a touchpad.
>Excellent GNU/Linux & *BSD support.

WHAT IN FUCK IS DONE TO THIS POOR LAPTOP? STUPID FAGGOT AMERICAN WITH MACINTOSH PHONE AND GIANT ORIFICE OF BOWEL LOOKS AT PERFECTLY FINE MACHINE OF INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS AND SAYS "NO, LAPTOP NEED LESS DUMB FEATURES ON IT"?

WHAT IS REASON FOR ISLAND KEY? IF YOU NEED TO TYPE QUICKLY IN EMERGENCY, NOW FINGERS TWISTED INTO PAINFUL ANGLE AND YOU MISS EVERY KEY! LOOK AT WRONG ANGLE OF SCREEN VIEWING! LOOK AT CHEAP PLASTIC CASE THAT CRACK LIKE TRASH FROM CHINESE SLAVE FACTORY! WHERE DID POINTING STICK GO?

I HEAR OF CANCER OF MACINTOSH IN AMERICA. ADDING ISLAND KEY TO LAPTOP MEANS YOU CHANGE OTHER PARTS. WHAT ELSE YOU FUCK? YOU PUT CHEAP SOLDERED RAM? HOW ABOUT BAD SCREEN OF TWISTED NEMATIC DESIGN AND ASPECT OF HOLLYWOOD TO SHOW OFF AT CAPITALIST COFFEE HOUSE AND NEVER COMRADE CAN SEE WHEN SIT NEXT TO YOU?

SURE, IS ONLY CHINESE SLAVE FACTORY COPY TYPE BUT IS STILL PROUD DESIGN OF RICHARD SAPPER. THIS IS LIKE SENDING HIM BIRTHDAY CARD WITH SEVERED OFF THUMB OF DAUGHTER IN ENVELOPE. "HAPPY BIRTHDAY COMRADE SAPPERI! I PISS ON ALL YOU CREATE!" LARGE MOUND FORMS OVER LANDFILL BY CONSTANT TUMBLING OF ANGRY MACHINE SPIRITS. IS FAULT OF PEOPLE LIKE YOU.

LAPTOP WAS FINE BEFORE YOU FUCK IT. NOW IS TRASH. MAYBE YOU CHECK IN FACTORY AND ORIGINAL DESIGN OF CASE AND KEYBOARD ARE STILL THERE. MAYBE IS NOT TOO LATE TO KEEP LAPTOP SOMETHING NOT SHAMEFUL TO TAKE TO PLACE OF EDUCATION OR WORK. TAKE SHIT OF GOAT AWAY AND COULD STILL BE GOOD LAPTOP.

Hey /tpg/. I have an old x201 that's about to kick it soon, and I'm wondering if any other models can accept some of the parts. The integrated camera on my T420s is not working. I bought the laptop used, with the Windows 10 upgrade installed.
There's no Camera section in the Lenovo Settings app, and Device Manager doesn't even detect any imaging devices.
I thought it was just the lack of drivers/support in Windows 10, but even when I installed Ubuntu it can't detect a webcam.
Any ideas? Or should I just get my money back.

I want to wrap a t520 for a new look.

What can I upgrade before doing this so I dont have to open it up twice.

Well, guys, today I brought home my new (and sort of first) thinkpad.

It's a T420S, with the i7-2640M and 16GB RAM. I also think it has the NVS 4200M, because it talks about nVidia Optimus in the BIOS. I have a 500GB 850 EVO arriving this evening, then I will be installing Fedora. Laptop was $215 with tax, and the SSD was $150. Pretty excited.

Hey /g/ yesterday my trusty t420 mysteriously died. I was doing some light work on word and went to get coffee, when I came back from the kitchen the laptop was completely dead. I tried another power source and didn't worked, the battery was around 90% too. There are no lights whatsoever when I plug the charger in.

I pressed the power button 10 times and held it for 30 seconds as it is advised on similar cases to discharge static, but had no luck. I've tested the ram, hdd, optical drive, keyboard and they are all working fine.

For those who bitch about the X230 having a shit chicklet keyboard...

There is a mod to get an X220 keyboard working fully and potentially a T430 with a T420 keyboard... (though they all should be the same, I havent checked FRU's)

I don't believe I have any T420 keyboards laying around to see if I could mod mine yet.

Also remember you have to grind/cut some parts of the keyboard for it to fit into the laptop.

What is your definition for obsolete?
Maybe I am biased but I have my T430s on the market on craiglsist, someone said it was outdated and offered $400 for it.
I had it out for $600 w/ the IPS mod (I would of been fine if he offered $500), but its otherwise perfect.

Anywho, my computers are good with being able to web-browse, stream 1080p at a constant FPS, not die with photoshop and play League at highest settings without framedrops under 30fps.

I take my laptops to work but all that is needed is to be able to connect to a camera and post photos and post listings on eBay.
Basic work like every other business.

You're a big guy for admitting it.

First time I took my T60 apart, I drew a map where all the screws went and their relative lengths (S/M/L).

You'll pay more attention next time and not fuck shit up. Comes with experience.
>>
>>54179518

Happens to the best of us. Take better notes on the screws. I've found the best way is to make a rough sketch of each layer as you go. Place each screw upside down in the appropriate place on your sketch. Another tip is to use different colored sharpies to mark the top of the screw and place the same colored dot next to its hole.

Not at all

X230 is marginally, to a nearly unnoticeable extent, better in only the cpu department. The only reason the X230 might be considered is for the intel HD 4000 over 3000 which is quite a bit better.

If you don't play the latest games or have a desktop already there is literally no reason to get the X230

Alright, I have a couple questions about my new 420S.

Is the main drive bay SATA II? Same for the optical bay? I remember reading somewhere that it was. Also, is the mSATA slot SATA II as well?

I want to get better WIFI speeds. I was sort of hoping to see a difference from my shitty HP, but I am still getting around 2MB/s transfer speeds. They are both from around 2011, so I assume it's that 'draft-N' bullshit. My 420S came with the Advanced-N 6205 2x2, would I see any difference if I got the Ultimate-N 6300 3x3?

Heyo,

Swap to using my T430 as my main rig is closing in. Before it becomes the only comp in my hands, i'll try to do all sorts of maintenance to prevent problems in the future.

Bought the T430 used, but it was in MINT condition. Original battery was had only gone trough 1 charging cycle.

Still, T430 was build around 2012, right? So even thoguh it's clearly not been used i'm wondering should i change the thermal paste. Planning to use Coollaboratory Liquid Ultra (i5-3320M). Any reason why i shouldn't? What else should i do while i'm at it (besides dusting the guts?)
>>
>>54186684
isn't liquid ultra designed more for sub zero use, and i would replace thermal paste that old regardless of use. It's a pretty easy thing to do.
>>
Is the screen of the X220T interchangeable with the X220 screen? I may be able to get a cheap defective X220T and since they all came with IPS panels, I thought that this would be a great way to upgrade the shitty TN panel, if it's possible.

My problems with the T420:

1. Ctrl key is in a stupid place, although you can fix this by swapping Fn and Ctrl in bios. It still triggers my autism though since the labels don't match what they do.

2. I keep accidentally opening the DVD drive, the button is super sensitive, I guess I could just swap it for a HDD caddy.

3. No HDMI.

What are your problems with the T420, /tpg/?

>you need to remove the keyboard/palmrest to really get in there.

Removing the keyboard is really easy though.
Much easier than removing the back cover, like you have to do on most laptops and on modern Thinkpads.

My main issues are the shitty screen and the fact it just isn't fast enough for my modern needs.

>linux can't into optimus
It's very much a Thinkpad for people who don't know what Thinkpad they want. Cheap and flexible, but no real strengths.
>>
>>54189373
>one headphone/microphone jack
I understand this because in 2011, any mic youd buy would be a usb, 3.5mm mics died years ago.
>>
>>54189215
It's literally two screws:
One to open the maintenance hatch, and one to unlock the keyboard.

By comparison: on my new T460p it's 8 screws and a whole array of plastic clips that can only be unclipped by ripping the plastic back cover off with force.
>>
>>54189413
It's more the drivers that are the problem. It took me forever to figure out which setting I had to fuck with to make the internal mic work when I had headphones in.
>>

So, I just scored an x201 with the Ultrabase. I have another x201, but it has pretty much shit the bed. The problem is that the new x201 doesn't have a trackpad. While this isn't a huge deal for me, I figured I'd ask, how difficult is it to replace a palmrest on an x201? I'm thinking of stripping my old x201 and adding some parts to the new one. I have very little experience with taking apart computers, and almost none in taking apart laptops.

Ok, a bit of an update on this mess, i got some good sleep, and went at it again.

I removed every screw, took the whole thing apart, found that the long screw i put through the palmrest didnt affect anything else, it fit through a big empty space where nothing was.

I finally got the top plastic plate in correctly, and i glued it down as i broke the clips last night.

Its all working, but i have an apple hard drive for some reason which i never noticed before. And the caddy screws are missing, so its being propped up with a rolled up bit of plastic.
Works though, and thats all that matters.

You've shown me yours so I'll show you mine.

First a normal picture to show what it looks like to the naked eye.
The recycle bin and the cursor indicate the top corners, and serve as a reference to white.

And the same, but with a higher ISO and longer shutter time to emphasize the difference in black levels.

This shows there are some "light leaks", but nothing I could see with my own eyes, only the camera (set to f/1.4, ISO 6400 and 1/25s) could capture it.

yeah, they fixed one out of a hundred fuckups while not listening to the community regarding numerous design changes. All they had to do was continue making quality machines and instead they decided they will start making consumer-tier trash

Why are cheap IPS screens so shit? Even my HP compaq with a TN display is better.

It wasn't an option.

This is unfortunately what it looks like to the naked eye for me.

So I am having some problems with my new T420S.

I am trying to install Fedora and it worked OK for the first few hours of the install, but then it became unstable and eventually would not boot. I try to input my encryption password and it just does not boot. It drops me to the dracut terminal.

When I boot the live image it is very unstable, with lots of graphical errors, eventually crashing and forcing me to log out.

Also, the laptop will not stay off. I turn it off (either from within the live image or manually by holding the power button), and it turns off, but then a few seconds later it will power on on its own.

The temps looked fine when the install of Fedora was working. I am currently running memtest to see if it's the memory.

Any suggestions or ideas?

IPS has advantages and disadvantages when compared to TN.

Black levels is a weak point for IPS, don't know why exactly.

I am very happy with my T460p screen, btw.
It's certainly not "cheap" in terms of quality, and it's great for outdoor use. (I plan to work outside once the weather gets a little better).

Update:
Upon inspection the two memory modules seem to be mismatched. They are both Kingston 8GB sticks, but one is 1333MHz and one is 1600MHz. Would this cause instability?

Backlighting wouldn't even be necessary if they wouldn't have fucked up the layout in the newer keybards. It's practically necessary now to find those less-often-used keys.

>Just put in some new thermal paste
Probably fucked it up. Try reapplying and make sure you don't trap any air. Also, make sure your thermal sensor isn't faulty.

>need sidekick buying a x220
- 2540m i5
- 8Gb Ram
- 250GB ssd
- 500GB HDD
- IPS Panel
>rarely use the t440p

Why is the x220 so comfy? Even the speakers got better comparing to a x201. This is the ultimate TP

I recently got a T420 and put some loonix on it. However, suspend/hibernate doesn't work. When i trigger it, it goes into a pseudo-suspended state when the screen is off, the power button is rapidly flashing and the battery keeps going down; also it can't be resumed from, only turned off. A plenty seems to have been written about making suspend work on thinkpads it seems, but I can't seem to find the right solution. Anybody got any ideas?

got a t420, recently got some new drives and did a fresh install of win7.

I've got an SSD with my OS on it, and a terabyte HDD for file storage.

How can I be sure APS is running to protect the HDD and not just running for the mSATA.
