That being said, most garakei are pretty capable compared to the typical dumb phone. They can all send e-mail and have a decent web browser and train schedule app. I have seen some that can tether, and even some that have common apps like dictionaries and LINE.

She's only 12 years old, for fuck's sake. But instead of taking responsibility and making her go to school, as one would do with a spoiled, petulant child, they went after my girlfriend blaming her for ruining their child's life. They took it to the Board of Ed and tried to get her fired, and then threatened her SEVERAL times with lawsuits.
People have kids like they're having pets, like it's not a serious commitment, and expect their teachers to do all the work of raising them.

-No disciplinary action for disrupting classes (ie walking around, starting fights in the classroom, climbing on desks, harassing other students, screaming, etc)
So you've got a system where there aren't really any actual grades being given, and nobody is actually required to participate or show up to advance to the next level. Then you have to take a very difficult exam to get into a high school that's successful enough in propaganda to have a "good" reputation. The delinquent students aren't encouraged or required to take the standardized tests, and so the scores are conveniently absent of those negative outliers. Once students enter high school it's the same story, where there's no metric except standardized test scores. No creative writing, no critical thinking, just memorization. Examinations never ask about the why of the ideas taught, resulting in superficial understanding.

I suppose I should clarify; I was in central Ogaki in the middle of the city, not one of the weird gerrymandered inaka parts. It's wack, it's like having separate non-contiguous islands of a city stretched out in the middle of nowhere across different counties.
I've lived out in the actual sticks in rural Fukuoka and Nagasaki, places with the Cinderella express where if you're not on a bus or train out of the nearest civilization before 9pm you're not getting back. Compared to that the Nagoya metro area is huge. The sprawl here is so bad you can't really judge by population density.

Glass today is the same thing as it was years ago. There may be some more resistant lens coatings, or coatings that give "truer" colors, but it is all small things.
The biggest change recently would most likely be translucent mirror and mirrorless cameras. Modern cameras are fast enough to focus without a mirror for most uses.

I currently have this phone. The screen is really nice, and the clean sharp edges have their appeal. But the battery is not removeable, and it has a distinct lack of memory. Constantly bogging down by whatever the provider put on their.
I will say WHEN it works, it works great. But half the time I can barely type with the keyboard (if it responds, it`s usually registering the wrong press, or takes forever to register) Maybe if I can get it rooted and get rid of all the bloat. I keep putting off looking into that.

They are exposed when the lens is off. But it isn't exactly a dust magnet. They have sensor cleaning modes, and if it really gets bad there is stuff to clean it relatively easily.
It isn't really a concern to be honest.
If you are that worried about it, you can get an A7 series with an LA-EA4 adapter. The adapter is to use A-mount lenses and features a translucent mirror.
