I have tried razer keyboards at my local electronics store and their switches feel ok, but I'm not a huge fan of them. I'd have to open it up to check out the build quality, but they don't have a very amazing reputation going for themselves in that aspect.

I can tell you though that they look ugly as shit and that the bottom row is non-standard, so there's two great reasons to not get a razer keyboard.

They are. To the naked eye they aren't so bright. The bounce flash is incredibly bright, pierces the blue layer, and bounces off the white layer, making them appear brighter. Under normal lighting they're slightly more subdued.

Here are the old red ones for comparison. They are not translucent and do not brighten under flash the same way.

I have a blackwidow ultimate 2013 before they made the big switch change, I love it; I got a k70 with brown switches for Christmas and that my main board now. Even with that said, I used the bw with my 2nd rig and it's great. I find its smaller than my k70 and it takes time to get back into it, but once I do I do t have an issue with it. I also have the ouroboros and it's fantastic. Because I'm one of those people I changed it out for a rival, I wanted to keep the colors matching. Again I use it with my 2nd rig and that too is fantastic

No, but if you press the request button on the gateron drop massdrop will pay no particular attention to that and send you an email should they show up again. Which seems quite likely, they were already up two times in rapid succession and massdrop is always glad to make more money off things.

If you don't care a whole lot about the switch type you could give matias switches a try. They're really damn cheap, you'll just have limited options when it comes to keycaps.

If you're talking about input lag, I wouldn't be terribly surprised either.

>the bezel
I see where you are coming from, the bezel is a bit excessive. Sometimes I use the bottom bezel as a wrist wrest when typing anything long, but you are correct that the top bezel is unnecessary and the bottom itself is pretty large.

>macro keys
They serve a useful purpose, though I guess not everyone needs, wants, or even likes them at all.

However, Razer offers a version without the macro keys if they really are that bad to you.

>Snakes logo
You win there, it is pretty ugly. I am willing to overlook it because it is a good keyboard, but the logo is pretty bad.

>Keycaps
I personally like the feel of the keycaps, and I like how large they are and there is no wobble.

However, >>54152818 is right in that they tend to collect grease after some usage, but cleaning the keycaps isnt too hard at all and it rids all the grease.

I honestly don't think the font on the keycaps matters at all, unless you look at your keyboard when typing for whatever reason.

>huge case
True, the size could be reduced. My only real issue with the case is that the top plate hangs over the sides of the case a bit, which adds unnecessary size.

I imagine it would be a pain using this with a very small desk.

Just tested on mine, yeah, this happens.

Anyway, any 6.25u spacebar will work fine on this keyboard. 6.25 is the standard spacebar spacing, so, pretty much every keyset fit.

You can make it work on the default keycaps tho, you just need to not insert the stabs "legs" all the way down. Put something like double sided tape in the middle to prevent it from entering, and the spacebar will stop hitting other keys.

How is this hard to understand? You either stretch your right hand to the left more while typing, or have to stretch to the right to reach the mouse if you have it on-center.

Unless you're left handed, 60% is better ergonomics. This is for typing and actual work, not gaymer garbage.

Yup, typing on it right now.

Though I also got another board that I rotate it with. I feel like building another TKL or 60% (or maybe a 40%) now, but I'm getting some keycaps for the memeforce in pic related first. Also going to put together some numpads/macro pads together sometime, one with alps and another one with gaterons since I still have the switches and plates for both laying around.

I've got gateron clears in the magicforce (excuse the blurry picture) which are really damn nice. I'm thinking of going with blacks for the numpad since I still have a 120 pack of those laying around and I'm not sure anymore if I want to use them for my split keyboard project.

The plate for the numpad will be from my old cherry mx board 3.0 (first mech) which is in ISO and I hence don't have much use for anything but the numpad part. Maybe I'll make a TKL for a friend to whom the reds belong with the rest of the plate (if he can get over his autism which somehow makes the barely noticeable variation in weighting in some of the gaterons a problem (he was somehow expecting cherry quality but smoother from cheaper chink knockoffs)).

Other than that, I just remembered that I'm planning to get a clueboard next. I want a keyboard with an entirely clear casing and I'm quite curious to try out matias QC switches. Should go well with the alps numpad.

Sure.

They're really fucking light. Like, if you thought that reds are light you haven't felt nothing yet.

I'd say that it feels a lot like I'm typing on nothing but the keycaps. You just press down and it goes right down, extremely smooth and with just about no resistance (hence I but a red in the spacebar). Holding them down when gaymen feels pretty much the same, it feels almost like I'm just resting my fingers on the keycaps (I used to game on cherry clears). Contrary to my expectations, I'm not making more typos than usual, despite these being so light. I feel like the amount of typos depends more on the keycaps one has rather than the switches under them.

It's an extremely pleasant feeling (typing on them now), they aren't so crazy light that they actuate just by you resting your fingers on them (unless you maybe have extremely heavy fingers). Though I do sometimes have them pressed down in some games without even noticing that I was pressing them. Like I said, it really feels like I'm typing on almost nothing, it's a really fucking pleasant feeling, these are definitely some of my favourite switches. If you want something light that feels unlike anything you've typed on before, I can highly recommend them.

If you want to use a PCB you'll either have to design your own (in which case I'd just recommend hand wiring) or take a PCB that already exists. You can find PCBs on mechanicalkeyboards.com, gonskeyboards also sells just about everything you need to build your own keyboard (quite overpriced though).

I'd start with thinking about WHAT you want to build. Chances are someone already made something similar. If it's your first time I'd recommend following in the steps of what someone else did since it's a great way to learn and if you can contact the person who made the original thing they're often glad to help you.

So, what is it that you want to build?

What do you mean what do I want to build? As in, form factor? Probably either another TKL like the Ducky I have now, or a 60%. I'm not sure if that's what you mean.

As for the PCB, I would just buy one myself.
>>
>>54157646
really bad with money?
>>
>>54157635
Well that's a shit comparison. I mean sure the basic purpose of a car is to get you from point A to point B just like a keyboard is just a tool to allow you to input characters on a computer. The analogy stops there.

With cars you get ones for different purposes, some are trucks that haul things around, others are soccer mom mobiles, and others are luxury sport cars. Sure you can argue that customizing a shitbox is a money

pit but what you gain is performance and different capabilities. You can have a jeep that can rock crawl or a FRS that is better tuned for the track. With keyboards you reach the point of diminishing returns with a

single upgrade, everything else is purely cosmetic.

>Custom cable
Cosmetic.
>Pbt double shot keycaps
Mostly cosmetic (having shiny key caps does not make a keyboard less functional)
>RGB lighting
Ricer cosmetic
>Aluminum base/shell
Cosmetic that only affects feel slightly
>Different switches
Purely subjective
>60%
reduced functionality/aesthetically interesting but might give you a more ergonomic feel
>Ergodox
Sure it's more comfortable, i'll give you that.

The only real improvement is when you spend money on a gamer keyboard which you can assign macros but at the end of the day it's just a tool used for typing that might give you a more tactile feel, slightly better

typing speed, and response. All the crap people spend on in these thread is multiple sets of keycaps that are just purely cosmetic and retarded. At least cars can get your a GF and are much more fun than typing.
>>
>>54157972

>What do you mean what do I want to build?
Yeah, pretty much the form factor/layout. If you want to build a TKL or a 60% things are simple enough since there's plenty of PCBs out there (Phantom PCB for example).

If you go with the PCB route all you need to worry about is getting a PCB, a case, a plate to put your switches, the switches and keycaps for them. You'll also have to find out how you can program your keyboard (phantom pcb uses a teensy 2.0 so you can use the TMK firmware with that).

Personally not what I'd consider the most exciting way to go about building a keyboard, but certainly a good start to it.

Also, don't expect this to be cheap. The combined cost will probably be more than an already completely assembled keyboard.
One of the reasons why I try to recycle keyboards as much as possible when building shit.

Actually, if you want to keep things cheap, I'd recommend doing just that. Get a cheap chink board or a vintage keyboard and mod it to your liking.
>>
I have a Ripjaws gaymen keyboard with browns. It's a tank.

Biggest issue is the raised keys meaning dust gets lit up like a christmas tree, I am constantly having to clean it which pisses me off no end. Oh and the UK version has a bug in that one of the keys does not light up in single color mode. It also doesn't have the option to assign keyboard shortcuts to macro keys which is lame.

Greetings. I come before /mkg/ in search of some advice and shall format as requested in the pastebin. I am looking to pick up a mechanical keyboard. This will be my first ever. I recently bought a $140 refurbished PC to play CS:Source with my little brother. I won't bore you with the whole story but I'm trying to connect. It's been about 6-7 years since I've been "in the loop" and everything has changed. The PC has been running the game fine on minimum settings which is all I need. I bought a cheap keyboard and mouse to match but have been disappointed. I bought a decent mouse which is on its way and while the keyboard I have is functional I feel I should get ahead of the curve and replace it before it dies like my mouse. So....

> Budget
I would like to be spending around $40. I have done some looking and feel like I should be able to get something functional in that range. I may be wrong.

> Location
USA

> Preferred Switch Type
While unsure, I looked at the image ya'll supplied in the pastebin link and feel that I would probably most enjoy Black switches.

> Layout
ANSI

> Form Factor
80% would probably be perfect for me.

> Backlight
Would definitely be cool/handy but I'm on a budget so not necessary. Functionality, durability and overall quality are more priority.

> Previous/Current Keyboard
Currently a walmart purchased "Onn" brand $9 P.O.S. Kinda gave my background in the intro statement.

Thanks in advance ya'll and I really appreciate any help I can get!

Was searching more and had seen magicforce recommended earlier in the thread. Bought this cause it seemed to match what I wanted. Can always return if not happy. How did i do?
