Yes. The aerodynamics are such that they would crash without computer assistance. The jets are just too unstable and too fast for a human to control.

Aircraft with low static stability become very stable in supersonic flight, and the tail surface has to create a high down-force so that the sum of all lift stays where the CG is. Creating lift always incurs a drag penalty, and in supersonic flight it has to be payed twice: One for the excess lift on the wing (which is needed to compensate for the tail's down-force) and one for the down-force on the tail.

Using a flight control computer offers the possibility to allow the pilot to let go of the stick without the aircraft going off course. Now the stick does not command elevator deflection, but pitch rate, and the CG can be moved back from maybe 12% of MAC (mean aerodynamic chord) to -2%.

Can a human still fly such an aircraft? In glider competitions, the more daring pilots fly with relaxed static stability and have no problem to keep the aircraft under control. Even the Wright brothers could handle their unstable airplane, and handling improved when they moved the CG further back (If you want to know why, please post a new question. This answer is getting too long already!). However, the speed of an aircraft's pitch response is proportional to flight speed (and inverse to the pitch moment of inertia), so faster aircraft are harder to control. You can compare dynamic pressure with the stiffness of a spring: A stiffer spring moves the eigenfrequency of a spring-mass system up, and the same is true for the eigenvalues of the equations of motion of an aircraft. Given that the reaction time of a good pilot is at least 0.1 s (and more if he/she is tired), it is impossible to counteract motions with frequencies of more than a few Hertz. The lag means that the reaction comes too late and will support the motion.

Upgrade it to the latest standards. F-22s haven't been upgraded in fucking forever, they can't even carry AIM-9Xs
>>
Trash the fucking F-35 and give the proper amount of funding that the F-22 was supposed to receive and give it a chance to have a full production run. The F-22 program was going perfectly fine until Congress decided to axe it prematurely for no goddamn reason.

The pilot doesn't get to manipulate the control surfaces, when he twiddles the stick all that does it send a signal to the control computer which decided how it wants to apply that input to the control surfaces. That's the whole point of fly by wire.

Well it was a retarded idea to trash the F-22 in favor of the F-35 in the first place, and the F-22 program was never even doing as badly as the F-35 farce has gone so far.

>f the software crashes in one of these does it literally crash?

Not so easily. Fly-by-wire has very high redundancy.

If one of the flight-control computers crashes or gives weird signals, the others computers overrule the faulty one (or even two of them) and continue flying the aircraft safely. The faulty computers will get rebooted or shut down (if reboot is not possible).

In the space shuttle they have four digital computers running its primary flight-control software PLUS a fifth back-up computer running a separately developed (reduced-function) software flight-control system.

First idea, recognize it is junk and start over. (or maybe relocate funds to other projects I think are better)

Some other things would be to use coordinated proper machining. The fact that parts were made by many manufactures, in many location with little coordination has lead to most parts being re-machined and surfaced at final assembly, defeating the gains of monolith part construction. This more then doubles the work and stresses parts lowering performance.

Reduce and add redundancies to computer and software. The fact that the time to main system crash is less then 2 hours is pitifully sad, and the mid-flight reboot takes so long that at cruise the plane nearly crashes before controls reactivate. There is a secondary system to stabilize flight to prevent crashing, but it doesn't handles sharp maneuvers well and do not sync with the navigation system. Which is why one test pilot ended up using his cell phone to figure out how for he drifted off course during reboot. (I am more surprised it worked given the type of phone he reportedly had)

Better paint job, not just to make it look cool, although I like to see it have some bight non-tactical colors just for fun even some LEDs which could actually be useful. But more to deal with the water issues with the paint they used. I know it has the best radar reduction value, but if it soaks water like a sponge leading to weight and friction gain, and icing issues, while loosing nearly all of its paint related stealth when wet or in high humidity then it is better to just have a lower stealth value and save a fortune on maintenance and while increasing reliability. Remember it is not always the most expensive weapon that wins the war.

>>54150900
The technology has been solved, but the core integration is still junk.
>>54150895
If someone bought it they could reverse engineer the amazing tech, then incorporate the tech into a more sensible structure making a world class war machine.

Well for starters they tweaked it too much, over too long a time with too many engineers.
At some point it is better to just charge ahead, less this happens.

I will try to use an analogy /g/ should get.

Let's say you are building a high end gaming computer. You plan it out. You know you want X GB of RAM and a Y GHz type CPU among other things like the latest Firewire port at the time.

So you start building, but do to funding and other things it takes you decades to build the thing. In the mean time new tech comes out, which you add to your design. Once you are done building you turn it on, and it works. But not nearly as well as you hoped.

The controller you used to convert the now outdated Firewire port to USB 3 adds a sizable amount of lag and doesn't really improve anything. The new CPU you replaced the old one with can't use all of it's features because of the older motherboard you had got years ago. The double slot graphic card you got, took the slot you had originally planned to use for the high speed internet card so your online games lag despite your insanely fast graphic rending. Which also now draws more power heating things up a lot and making the cooling pumps get loud which you find distracting during play. ...

So in the end if you had just built a decent gaming computer for a bit less with the best you had at the time you could have played the games you wanted to instead of waiting to finish building. Or just waited and invest in a nice new one years later you could play your new games, along with the old ones you had been saving, then you would of had a blast.

But no you had to have bleeding edged tech layered on outdated bleeding edge tech, resulting in a Frankenstein contraption that runs like a regular computer your mother would buy for work. Is it bad, not really as it does play most of your games, but you can't call it good either given all the issues it has.
