I wouldn't be surprised if they smuggle drugs in the cases.
>>
>>54140503
Yes, run by respectable chinese people (if you can call them that), because patents and trademarks simply don't apply to chinese companies. Those things are totally legal according to chinese laws.
>>
>>54140316
Actually this!
An awful lot of brands are just marketings money milking mashines. You pay way too mutch for some brands.

Save the money for something actually fun. Overpriced dogshit will have you justifying it to everyone, and feeling like ppl only want to annoy you.
Thus making you bitter and miserable.
>>
>>54140526
Stoning women for being raped is legal in some counties too, that doesn't mean those sandniggers are respectable in any civilized way.
>>
>>54140557

The point is, those counterfeit factrories are NOT run by organized crime, they're run by legitimate chinese companies that employ skilled workers that are payed like chinese skilled workers (well, for chinese standards, like dogshit, for western standards).
They're not starving children being abused by mafia in any means, like you're implying.

>>

>>54140526

No really. Just google it. You'll find dozens of sources. It's common knowledge that the counterfeiting rings are controlled by triads and the like.

And no, it's not legal in China or Southeast Asia.
As with other criminal organizations, the ringleaders escape prosecution with bribes, extortion, having people take the fall for them, and so on.

You're just mad because your willful ignorance is under attack.
>>
>>54140585

That's wrong, though...

Counterfeit factories ARE run by organized crime and DO exploit un-payed & under-payed laborers.

You can find this out very easily. You are trying to deny it because it makes you a bad person.

But hey guess what! Being willfully ignorant doesn't make you any less of a bad person.

There's no simple answer.
Different watches require different tools for different repairs.

It's not really a great plan to buy broken watches, fix them, and flip them. If you have the knowledge and equipment to do this, you'll make better money servicing other people's watches.

Found this Scubapro 500 Automatic on my flooded attic after being left unattended for two decades or so.

The crown has fallen off (I believe broke at one of its thread), there are rust spots all over it, the lugs are stuck and one of the pins has broken inside the watch.

And most importantly, even though it's missing the crown, if I wind it through movement, the seconds hand it will start moving though it doesn't seem to store power. If I wind it for a minute it will completely stop in two or three minutes.

Also couldn't open the back with the duct tape ball trick. Humidity and rust has sealed it shut.

Is it worth having it fixed and regulated? If so, should I expect it to be expensive? I'm kind of broke right now.
>>
>>54140367
This is a sweatshop? just looks like any manufacturing plant. is it because they are asian?
>>
>>54142046

The best thing to do would be to take a watch repair class. They'll be able to direct your learning in an informed manner.

Failing that, start by learning about escapements.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Escapement
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lever_escapement
http://www.nawcc-index.net/Articles/Headrick-EscMechanics.pdf

From there, move on to watchmaker channels on Youtube and keep an eye on watchprosite to read about interesting escapements & complications. Again consider receiving professional instruction.

If you really want to get into fixing things, there is a fairly well developed hobby industry revolving around the repair of old pocket watches. It is my general understanding that this is more affordable and often more interesting than tinkering with wristwatches.

Ok, update on the Scubapro 500 from here >>54142148.

Managed to open the caseback by using a superglued nut + WD40 + a wrench.

The movement doesn't seem all that bad or am I wrong? Some tarnishing on the rotor but most of it seems conserved. Maybe I lucked out it was a diver/scuba watch?

The (hopefully) most exciting part: the rotor was stuck. By manually moving past its stuck point a few times it began to work and started to store power. The rotor is moving much more freely now but it's still sticking at a certain point.

I didn't want to push it very far but I turned the rotor by hand for about a minute. So far it's been 30 minutes and the watch has been running absolutely fine.

This is reason to be hopeful, right? If it's just the rotor sticking and the broken crown, am I wrong to assume the movement itself is mostly fine?

Those damn Swiss, I'm seriously impressed this thing survived.
>>
>>54144295
You're probably okay. It was only exposed through the crown tube, and probably not completely submerged if at all. An ultrasonic bath at a watchmaker would likely take off any gunk and get it running great again. As a cool alternative to the usual vintage Seikos, I'd do it. I wouldn't run it much until then.
>>
>>54144377
Thanks. It's been 40 minutes and it's still running but I'll move it carefully not to charge it further.

Really psyched, just found out these (especially the silver bezel one which I what I have) often go for $1,000~2,000.

Quite a step up from my shitty Rodina.

>>

Eh, your figure may be right, but all sold listings on eBay I saw were around $1k for the black bezel or the quartz one.

Still, even if they go for $800, still a pretty damn great score.

Not too terrible, but it really needs service.

It's definitely not "mostly fine". There is discoloration in places and even a little bit of rust. It needs professional cleaning and lubrication. In the meantime you should avoid letting it run.

It's a really nice watch though. Well worth it.
>>
>>54144619
Yeah, definitely. I meant mostly fine in a general sense, as in the movement isn't ruined as people initially assumed here.

I'll definitely get it cleaned, lubbed and serviced. It still needs a new crown after all.

I'll also see if it's possible to clean the dial a bit and maybe relume the hands.

My most 'expensive' whatch is a seiko 7002, so I would like it to be somewhat 'special' not some generic moutain jew scam like tag heuer.

Also what are some brands with the best resale value for that budget? I don't plan to sell it but I would like it to keep it's value through time.
>>
>>54147860
Rolex tend to hold value pretty well. The name goes a long way to selling them.

If you're looking at dropping €3k, you're going to be looking at Rolex, Grand Seiko, Omega.
Omega's have a little bit of markup, and aren't necceseraly worth what they ask, but very good pieces none the less.
Grand Seiko, similar boat, marked up a bit, still very good.
Rolex..Well, they're Rolex. Fantastic time pieces, with the equivalent of the "Apple Tax" meaning half of the time you're going to pay for a name, but the other half, you're getting a quality item. Personally I think most rolexes look pig disgusting, with the only ones I find "good looking" are Explorers and Oysters.

>submarine steel

Can we stop for a second and talk about how utterly ridiculous this is?

It's literally just "muh katana steel folded over one trillion times" all over again.

Congratulations. Your perfectly normal steel case has an extra buzzword on it somewhere and MAY have gone through some kind of extra heat treatment.

Germans seem to like exotic/military steel. Here they make hammers out of commie vehicle armor:

>Your perfectly normal steel case has an extra buzzword on it somewhere and MAY have gone through some kind of extra heat treatment.
I don't think it's only that. I think what Sinn did is used the same steel alloy German submarines are built of. It's supposedly antimagnetic and more resistant to saltwater, which explains why they dared to give them a blasted finish which would normally be more prone to rust spots.

Does anyone have a suggestion for a nice looking digital watch that isn't fuckhueg?

I'd like something to wear while doing sports or riding my bike. I looked at the Suunto watches at first, but I saw one on a girl at work and it was incredibly big, so I won't even consider it anymore.

I've got a regular Casio right now, but it's a bit too subtle imo.

Make a digital watches thread and see what people post. I can start with my favs, the OutGear line from Casio (imagine budget ProTrek), sgw 100 and sgw 500.
