That sounds preposterous to me. If it were true (and I doubt it), then companies would be selling computers without a windows. This clearly is not happening, so there must be some error in your calculations.
I hope you realise that windows is more than just Office ? Its a whole system that runs the computer from start to finish, and that is a very difficult thing to acheive. A lot of people dont realise this.
Microsoft just spent $9 billion and many years to create Vista, so it does not sound reasonable that some new alternative could just snap into existence overnight like that.
It would take billions of dollars and a massive effort to achieve. IBM tried, and spent a huge amount of money developing OS/2 but could never keep up with Windows.
Apple tried to create their own system for years, but finally gave up recently and moved to Intel and Microsoft.
Its just not possible that a freeware like the Linux could be extended to the point where it runs the entire computer fron start to finish, without using some of the more critical parts of windows.

Ubuntu has been around for over 10 years and even their last LTS had several very annoying issues.
the biggest of which was the VERY annoying fucking glitch that would cause the entire OS to restart automatically.
its entirely based on the X drivers, since when i switched to fedora 22 that had native wayland enviroment the issue never happened, but wayland had a lack of features and fedora was annoying as fuck
also i checked out the beta of 16.04 and using the Gnome Store to handle the updates is fucking shit as fuck
if microsoft was still cutting off windows 10 after 30 days and forcing you to pay $200 ot activate i'd still be on the linux bandwagon
also if qihoo360 with bitdefender an avira engines didnt exist for free an id still have to fuck around trying to crack a kaspersky security suite or something, then i'd still be on the linux bandwagon
never would i think the OS that i literally installed and never had to touch again was windows over linux
also amazon hooks are all over the ubuntu os, they even use it at their fucking corporate centers and the amazon app is still preinstalled on teh dashboard

Sometimes driver installation is easier in Mint for newbies like us. I use it out of necessity on one of my laptops, but when it works I prefer ubuntu.
Cinnamon works better in mint than in ubuntu.
I would suggest to try if Ubuntu works out of the box on your machine in a live enviroment, if it does and you are not a Cinnamon fan there's no reason to use Mint.

Install unity-tweak-tool. You have the option to move the launcher to the bottom of the screen. Man, Ubuntu looks so good now. I was a long time Arch user, Xfce was the only good DE I fiind but Unity is really ok, I'm so glad I don't have to use compton anymore (freezes). I'm on the latest daily build of Ubuntu right now, will install the LTS once released (and get rid of dualboot, I thought I need Windows on my laptop but I use it just on my second PC).
