Other business laptops are also welcome in /tpg/ (e.g. Dell Latitude/Precision, HP EliteBook/ZBook).

If you're looking for purchase advice, READ THE BUYERS GUIDE FIRST. Then post, stating budget and requirements (e.g. size and performance).
Don't buy anything OTHER THAN T, X AND W/P SERIES if you want the Real ThinkPad Experience™

Recommended models:
T420 - 14", normal size
X220 - 12.5", lightweight
----
Why ThinkPad? (also applies to other business laptops)
>Used machines are plentiful and cheap.
>Excellent keyboards - tactile feel and quiet.
>Great durability: chassis uses a magnesium rollcage for structural integrity, with high quality plastic body panels.
>Utilitarian design: e.g. indicator LEDs, 7 row keyboard layout on older models.
>Docking stations that easily turns your laptop into a desktop.
>Easy to repair, upgrade and maintain thanks to readily available service manuals for every model. Spare parts are easy and cheap to obtain.
>The best trackpoint (that red thing in the middle of the keyboard). Great for those who type a lot or hate swiping their fingers all over a touchpad.
>Excellent GNU/Linux & *BSD support.

I'm pretty sure you can't overclock a mobile processor. Even if you could, it wouldn't be a good idea on the T420 since its cooling isn't great to begin with.

Anybody got a T430 with a quad-core i7 in it? I could get one for 500 €. It also has a 480GB SSD and 2 x 8GB 1600Mhz DDR3. I'm kinda worried about possible heat issues though.

Intel CPUs newer than 2009 (and AMD newer than 2013) contain backdoors and mandatory proprietary code that makes Libreboot support basically impossible.

I have thought about getting a newer thinkpad, but the x200 does everything I need it to, and I can use it in freedom. My desktop does have a new CPU though.

Can I just throw in any quad core in my T420, or am I limited to a particular generation?
>>
>>54137708
I think it would be nice if other CPU architectures became more viable. In a perfect world I would love an architecture that is free and open with no patents that could be made by any company that had the resources, and could be run with no proprietary code. x86 is very ingrained though, so that would be very difficult to do.

>>54137724
http://mail.fsfeurope.org/pipermail/discussion/2016-April/010912.html

Intel Active Management is basicaly a low level complete remote control system that works all the way down at the BIOS level, and can be used while the computer is off. It is marketed as a tool for remotely controling servers, and people do use it for that, but it is in every Intel CPU newer than 2009.

If we want to go full tinfoil hat here, if the NSA/other agency were to get access to something like this, it could potentially render all encryption done on those CPUs meaningless, as the keys could be grabbed as the computer is running without the user ever knowing. This probably is not happening(yet), but the code is proprietary and hidden, so there is no way to know.

And it's finally done: the Alienware screen swap for the T420.

Coming from a 1366x768 display, the resolution improvement is awesome. However, it's still a TN display, so the angles aren't the best.

The colors are far better than the stock version, I no longer have to use a color profile for my display to unfuck the disgusting washed-out default settings.

As for the replacement, it's about as easy as they get.
The Alienware screen is the exact same size as the stock display, so all the mounting points line up perfectly.
The only tricky part is replacing the LCD cable and then seating the replacement cable properly.

Once that's done, it's a simple plug n play replacement, no BIOS mods or any shit required. My GNU/Linux distro picked up on the change immediately and there was no configuration required.

All in all, if you can't stand the default display and have ~80-90USD (approx 130 canadian pesos, including shipping and taxes) laying around, it's a worthwhile upgrade.

Let me know if you have any questions. I'll be updating Thinkwiki soon with this.

Here's a second picture that's way shittier. Dynamic range on iPhones sucks.

I should also note that there is no longer any of that "screen door effect" when reading text. That was pretty bothersome on the original display.

Also, the display finally has proper blacks/dark colors.

>>54139115
I've used this thinkpad for 8 months (and an X220 for about a year before that) and it was fine. However, at a certain point it becomes worth it to upgrade.

For me, I wanted to be able to put more shit on my screen when programming/working, and I had a bit of money I could spend so I bit the bullet.

If you don't mind the default display (which isn't THAAAT bad) or don't have the money to replace it right away, don't do it.

Hey /tpg/, I have a question for you guys.
I have a xps l502x that has a battery going on it. It has:
Quad core Sandy Bridge
8gb ram 1333 mhz
gtx 525m
500gb hard drive.
Nothing's wrong with it except for some light wear from ~5 years of use.
I can't really upgrade too much in it, but I can throw a new battery in there and maybe a SSD. Will that get this laptop going for another few years? Is it worth sinking the money into it? I know it's considerably less then a new laptop, but I'm worried about the ram being stuck at a lower speed.
Would you guys go new or go thrifty?

8GiB is all you should really need, unless you like to have a lot of memory intensive programs open at once or something. What's the best Ultrabay hard drive caddy for a T400? I have a spare 160GB mechanical drive after replacing the main with an SSD and I use my optical drive precisely never so it would be nice to have some extra space.

I read reviews for some and people complain about an ugly LED that is on for no reason or that they aren't flush with the side panel or that they don't lock for shit and fall out.

I don't want to waste money on bullshit, help me out here /tpg/

I went through that phase too, senpai.
Unless you want to play windumb gaymes, or absolutely need to use windows only software, use loonix.
I went from Win7 -> Win8.1 -> Ubuntu -> Xubuntu -> Mint -> Manjaro -> Win10 -> Antergos

Just keep a second partition with windows, or a virtual machine, if you should need it.

>>
>>54147961
When I was working at a charity refurbisher a while ago I dealt with quite a lot of them.

Honestly they feel pretty solid, and they look quite good from above. The trackpad feels nicer then the plasticy feeling older thinkpads. The trackpad buttons were much better then the previous 2540p's that were a fucking terrible design flaw (the rubber cover for the button would come off, but then could not go back on again meaning you had to get a new one.) The physical button light above the screen was broken on a lot of the units we received, so I guess more then a few people had run into problems with those.

Also check what the screen resolution is. If I remember correctly there were some that were 768p, some that were 900p.

200euros doesnt seem like a that good of a price though from looking on ebay.

what specs? if it's way better specced than an t/x*20 what you could get for that price, could be worth considering. also, try looking around for a 2570p, they seem to be just a tiny price gap apart from 2560p / t/x*20, much unlike the t/x*30

The thing is, Switzerland is generally not like that.
Normally, tech hardware is around the same price as in America, if you know where to look. Only for the higher-end stuff though, the low-end stuff doesn't even exist here, or is that overpriced you could just get something higher-end for the same money.

Germany for example is usually more expensive for tech than Switzerland, so is France, Italy etc.

Didn't you ask this 2 days ago? We said yeah then and will probably say that again now.
>>
>>54148589 >>54148615
Well, I'have contacted the seller, it comes with those specs:
CPU: Intel Core i5 2540M 2.60GHz
RAM: 8GB DDR3 1333MHz
HDD: 500GB SATA
Screen: 12,5” LED WXGA Anti-Glare (1366 x 768)

So yeah, I have been looking on ebay and I have found the same model cheaper. I will be looking for another used laptop for the same price.
>>
>>54149623
Also, it only comes with a 65W charger... Is that enough to power an i7 & Nvidia?
>>
>>54149686
It probably is. You can get a genuine 90w charger for like $10 on ebay anyways.
>>
>>54149631
Yeah - but I've got it now, and am still somewhat ambivalent about whether or not to keep it. It doesn't have the webcam or fingerprint reader the description said it had, and it has an Nvidia GPU that I didn't really want, and it only came with a 65W charger. Oh and the Windows sticker says "Windows 7 Pro OA for Lenovo Singapore". So I assume this laptop has seen some mileage....
>>

That's literally the same lineage and a step of the multiplier. You could probably find one with that processor out there. iOS devices past 6.1 cannot be sync anymore. limitations of the library. imobiledevice.

i have no issues tho. i have a jailbroken device with PwnTunes (got the license for free in a raffle) and it mounts the /mobile folder the device as MTP so i can transfer music to it.
