Is it just me or has Google been complete garbage at delivering good search results for the past three or four years?

It seems like it's always giving me a bunch of filtered and corporate/government-approved results on the first page (and we all know no one ever looks past the first or second page of results).

Back in the day you used to find interesting pages, articles, blogs but now it always leads to the same handful of websites like lifehacker, stackoverflow, webmd, wikipedia, wikihow etc.

Btw wikipedia is also terrible. Surely someone has a better grasp on the history of the roman empire or machine learning or prion diseases and has written a better article about it then those convoluted, condensed wiki entries, so why not show it?

>Btw wikipedia is also terrible. Surely someone has a better grasp on the history of the roman empire or machine learning or prion diseases and has written a better article about it then those convoluted, condensed wiki entries, so why not show it?

no
wikipedia is fucking amazing
if you dont want as much information or detail use simple wikipedia
>>
>>54135275
I've gotten the same impression. The way we use internet search nowadays is different now though, you no longer need to find the best website for weather, stocks, even news, even addresses - Google shows everything right in it's search results.
For actually finding interesting things outside this bubble it sucks though. In my opinion Google is no longer about finding websites, but about finding answers, even if the answers come from the same sources all the time.

>>54135304
seconded, wikipedia is a blessing, even if they're not perfect
>>
>>54135432
>Google is no longer about finding websites, but about finding answers

Nicely put.
>>
Years ago I used to use a engine called "Inference Find", used Yahoo then Altavista, then Google. Maybe you faggots are to young to remember but shit used to be scattered all over the fucking place, the internet is different today, a lot of the internet is just dead and been replaced by facebook/tumblr bullshit. I remember people used to be scared to use a search engine because so often porn would be what would come up, sometimes cp is what would come up. I wish there was a good up to date web directory or even a alternative to google that doesn't return the same results as a google search.
>>
I don't give a fuck what anyone says, I've had better results with Bing when trying to find something specific.
>>
I've switched to duckduckgo, the results change a little from other search engines, but still same shit
>>
Their is no alternative to google anymore. Yahoo, startpage, ddg all use googles search engine
>>
I use bing more and more these days since it seems to have improved a lot.

PLus if you search for porn images/videos or just non porn ones bing has great video thumbnail previews.
>>
>>54135900
Oh and you get some dank papes since each day you get a featured bg wallpapers/images and some are pretty dope.
>>
It's not just you. It really has become garbage.
>>
>>54135275
You know what the cool kids say?! Bing it on!
>>
>>54135900
>>54135913
>>54135948
What is it with bing fags, google is amazing you guys are retarded
>>
I agree
I can't find fucking anything on google anymore
I can search, word for word, an EXACT QUOTE of something that I'm looking for, and the first few results will be completely unrelated bullshit, and then further down the page is exactly what I typed. Why is it not the first result? For what reason has google found EXACTLY what I typed and decided that it is not the most relevant answer?
And that's when I'm lucky, most times, there is no answer to be found at all. For example, I can search "Program to host files on local network", and I'll search every possible rephrasing of that, and no matter what, the results will always be "How to modify your host files" instead of showing me what I fucking asked for like XAMPP or HFS
Google is fucking shit
>>
>>54135275
Well it's in part fault of all the websites that actually pay google to be on the first results and the ones that exploit the search algorithm on the first spots too.
I actually knew a guy that ran a book business and used to exploit google's algorithm for it, then algorithm changed and he got rekt went from the first page to like page 10, he eventually went out of business.
>>
>>54135664
Oh I remember Altavista. Back then I was constantly search-engine-hopping, because nothing was really better than the others. There was a real market for competition. Msn, Yahoo, Altavista, Lycos, Ask.com, AOL.
>>
>>54135948
>>54135983
yahoo it, goym
>>
>>54136007
you have to wrap everything in 10 layers of hard quotes and then pick the 'verbatim' option. Not making excuses for Google here, but yeah.
>>
honestly tho what is better than google, bing is shit, yahoo is an ancient joke and everything else doesnt have enough knowledege of the internet to be considered a real option
>>
>>54136060
Even that doesn't work sometimes
It just outright ignores them
>>
>>54135983
I just prefer it these days.

Also for some reason, porn or not porn but adult tier shit for me on google does not work and filters my results unless I add "xxx" to the search terms.

Fucking why?
I'm signed in and it knows I'm 26.
Safe search claims to be off, turning it on and off again makes no difference either.

Google treats me like a fucking child. Bing doesn't.
>>
>>54135522
What anime is the gif? I love that style of animation. Thanks!
>>
>>54136091
okay youre actually right adult searches arent the same on google, safe search fucks me over but for general shit like research googleis better in my opinion for finding answers and exact quotes, from my experience
>>
>>54135948
I hate the phrash google it, its annoying how a corporation can have that much of an impact on modern language
>>

I wosh i was alive and 18 in the 80s. I woulda pirchased heaps of google stock. Shame booms like this wont happen again, especially after facebook became the last one.
>>
>>54136204
I use yandex mail sometimes for fraudulent purposes, but im curious what their privacy is like. Are they really that good?
>>
>>54135275
>Back in the day you used to find interesting pages, articles, blogs but now it always leads to the same handful of websites like lifehacker, stackoverflow, webmd, wikipedia, wikihow etc.
That's just because the entire web has been funneled into those sites. People don't make simple homepages anymore. At least, not as often as they used to.
>>
>>54136093
Cowboy bebop
>>
>>54136257
Well they cant because geocities is kill.
>>
>>54136242
I would bet the Russian government makes sure that if anybody reads your email, it's them and not any western governments. And Yandex sure aren't criminals who would steal your credit card information, or else they could do it with the millions of Russians who use it as well.
So the question is, if you can hide your secrets from your government by giving them to another, is it worth it?
>>
>>54136034
me to, you could actually find different things depending on what engine you used. never had luck with ask or lycos, and never used aol really. Yahoo was good enough for a very long time, even after google came around I don't know if yahoo got bad or google got good, I think it was both really.

Then Yahoo went off the fucking rails
>oh lets make a itunes competitor because why the fuck not
>that thing we bought that is such a popular social media before anyone called it that geocities, yeah, lets shut that shit down
>lets replace geocities with this shit called yahoo 360 which is just a profile, that will work
>that popular directory that got us on the map, lets shut it down
>lets sell off the popular webring service we got

it was like they wanted to be irrelevant
>>
>>54136204
Nah they got a really nasty cookie that tracks your ass all the time and it's almost impossible to get rid of it.
>>
>>54135948
bing is even worse t b h
>>
duckduckgo > google
>>
>>54135833
are you kidding? I've found tons of files that would never show up during a google search.
>>
>>54136283
Well didnt the rushing government play a part in the Panama papers?
>>
>not just using searx.me
>>
>>54136302
Google became popular when they were a really fast and precise search engine, and nothing more. Yahoo, Aol, Msn, they offered everything to everyone in a really confusing format. 50+ options on their "portal" page, when most people just wanted to search for something.

I actually think that these days Google is becoming more and more like these old portal sites. Google has waaaay too many services. The only saving grace is that their main page (google.com) is still very clean, and that they dominate their markets now.
>>
>>54136351
Which uses.. Bing.
>>
>>54135275
>(and we all know no one ever looks past the first or second page of results)
There's your problem. You.
>>
I use Bing a lot more now. It gives me the sites I'm looking for when I want to torrent stuff and Bing videos is great for porn or to watch my favorite shows. On top of that every time I search, I accumulate points which I can redeem for things like amazon gift cards.
>>
>>54137124
I wish i could get points from bing, id use them if i could
>>
>>54136484
Your reply is almost word for word what a friend of mine told me at the time... Are you in Macau??

You are right though, Yahoo was at the time, slower than google even though today yahoo is still slower than it was back then and so is google. I remember everyone wanted a fucking gmail inviten because "you never have to delete anything anon" and even back then I thought "why would you want to keep all that shit?"

It feels like google has turned into the altavista of then, only with better results, regular users can't tell where the ads end and the results begin, and a lot of the results are pushed either by payment or shenanigans. It's the right time for a alternative if they can push it.
>>
>>54135275
you just dont know how to search it, things have changed with their algorithms over the past few years. You have to put your search queries in like a dumbass would. If the autocomplete can guess your whole query before you finish typing you will get your result. Also use things like -inurl:someword to exclude results with 'someword' in the URL, or just 'inurl:' (without the minus) to include them
there are a whole bunch of these extra parameters.

The only thing wrong with google search recently is they've taken down a lot of results due to DMCA complaints

Bing still allows you to search for porn.
>>
I use bing because I dont like how google displays some things to 'make it easier' for me. I like to find my own shit. And I use edge because its smoother.

Search results would be a lot better if you could block all clickbait and content mill domains.

Use a metasearch engine like searx.me and choose good engines.

I was going to say google "muslims are terrorists" just like that, with quotation marks, but even that gives you results saying how muslims are not terrorists. They still put not in it. Lovely.
