You literally can't, though. For instance, the only good pdf readers are okular and atril, and the only good runners are krunner and the unity one. The only other decent runner is kupfer, which has ceased development years ago, is really hard to find, and isn't anywhere near as slick or powerful as krunner. Likewise, there are no good calculator programs not tied to DEs (but all DE calculators are good). Puma and kate are by far the best GUI text editors, and although vim is much better for heavy editing, emacs is dogshit in every task.

Hell, I could never even find a good clock/calendar popup. Literally just cal is better than any non-DE option, but it's obviously nowhere near as powerful (you have to get out of your way to spawn a terminal to use it, and you can't attach useful reminders to it).

HELL, even FUCKING DROPDOWN TERMINALS have no alternatives outside DEs.

>>54142276
For some reason I never really got used to looking at clocks and now I need to get used to looking at analog clocks before I completely forget :^)
>>
>>54142292
Part of it is nostalgia but a lot of it is while I acknowledge it looks very good, I feel it's kind of hollow. I feel like I'm using a toy or piece of art, not a tool. That's why I prefer older-style looking desktops. To each their own, though.

I notice when I work on my writing, it's much easier when the desktop is closer to something like 2000 style GTK or late 90s Windows. That's just my preference, though.

I will admit if I'm only browsing the web or playing games, then I prefer a desktop that looks something like Mac OS X. For work, I don't.

>>54142354

Trinity is too buggy and shitty for actual use, and doesn't use the cool opensuse patches which were actually great at the time.

Mate is the only real option for a modern DE. Back in gnome2/kde3 days, both were actually good, and even xfce was alright. Where did everything go so wrong?
>>
>>54149261
what is the point of using old KDE?
The main reason to use the new ones is krunner, so why would you use something pre krunner?
>>
Still seems "comfy" to me
>>
>>54132256
STOP RECOMMENDING XFCE, STOP.

Mate is a fork of GNOME 2, so it's fast on old machines but whatever.

Cinnamon is a fork of GNOME 3. So it's essentially GNOME but with some added and some missing features. Pretty much anything you can do with Cinnamon can be done with GNOME.
>>
>>54150059
Better panel, konqueror is actually god-tier, much more lightweight, no widget bullshit, more customizability (though I agree that KDE4's good enough for the most part).

With the opensuse patch, or even just the run command dialog, the in-menu search is good enough that krunner doesn't matter that much, but I agree that it's a ridiculously good runner.

Now, the main problems with KDE5, however, are: even less customizability than KDE4 which has less than KDE3; reliance on systemd for no valid reason (the explanation they tried to give was so ridiculous it reeked of payoffs or threats), crashy as fuck (they learned nothing from KDE4), muh flat bullshit, but also ridiculous amounts of wasted space everywhere (have you even seen the fucking network settings popup? Takes half the screen to display absolutely nothing). The only good thing is that it separates the different parts of KDE so another qt DE could take over but keep the KDE programs.
>>
>>54150105
The flat theme is just a theme. You select something else if you want.

I never got used to konqueror, but dolphin have a built in terminal which makes it much more suitable for a file manager.

The widget bullshit is easy to ignore, they pretty much removed the concept in plasma5 anyway, guess they don't want people to use them anymore.

I didn't notice the reliance on systemd, what do you mean? the login?

But krunner is just so essential, I can't go back to anything else. Even a tiling window manager seems slow to me as it doesn't have the ability to read my mind like krunner does.

I'd simply like to interject for a moment. What you're referring to as Linux, is in fact, GNU/Linux, or as I've recently taken to calling it, GNU plus Linux. Linux is not an operating system unto itself, but rather another free part of a fully functioning GNU system made useful by the GNU corelibs, shell utilities and vital system components comprising a full OS as defined by POSIX.

Many computer users run a modified version of the GNU system every day, without realizing it. Through a peculiar turn of events, the version of GNU which is widely used today is often called Linux, and many of its users are not aware that it is basically the GNU system, developed by the GNU Project.

There really is a Linux, and these people are using it, but it is simply a part of the system they use. Linux is the kernel: the program in the system that allocates the machine's resources to the other programs that you run. The kernel is an essential part of an operating system, but useless by itself; it can only function in the context of a complete operating system. Linux is normally used in combination with the GNU operating system: the whole system is basically GNU with Linux added, or GNU/Linux. All the so-called Linux distributions are really distributions of GNU/Linux.
>>
>>54154137
I'm terribly sorry for interjecting another moment, but what I just told you is GNU/Linux is, in fact, just Linux, or as I've just now taken to calling it, Just.Linux. Linux apparently does happen to be a whole operating system unto itself and comprises a full OS as defined by POSIX.

Most computer users who run the entire Linux system every day already realize it. Through a peculiar turn of events, I was misled into calling the system "GNU/Linux", and until now, I was unaware that it is basically the Linux system, developed by the Linux project.

There really isn't a GNU/Linux, and I really wasn't using it; it is an extraneous misrepresentation of the system that's being used. Linux is the operating system: the entire system made useful by its included corelibs, shell utilities, and other vital system components. The kernel is already an integral part of the Linux operating system, never confined useless by itself; it functions coherently within the context of the complete Linux operating system. Linux is never used in combination with GNU accessories: the whole system is basically Linux without any GNU added, or Just.Linux. All the so-called "GNU/Linux" distributions are really distributions of Linux.
