Just checked digital foundry becnhmarks.
An overclocked 750ti with an i3 still outperforms the Ps4/Xbone with most games.
Pretty sad but I guess those consoles have very shitty thermals and are easily thermalthrottled.

Depends on the specs. The current PS4 is roughly equal to an R7 370. If the NEO is indeed double the power, it will be equal to the R9 380X.

The only thing that can truly save this console, or at least make it more future proof then it is now, is to release a really power CPU model with a similar-spec GPU as the PS4 and add a Thunderbolt 3 port to allow an external PCIe3.0 x4 dock to connect to it. Sony could then provide an authorized list of PS4-approved GPUs (around $150-$200) so that users can upgrade their consoles without having to buy a whole new device.
Or, they can release a mini-ITX computer so users can install whatever CPU, RAM, GPU, or storage configuration they want, and maybe run a completely free-as-in-freedom OS as an option. The user interface could be one of those newfangled keypad things and a one-handed controller device that glides on a flat surface and uses lasers or infrared lights on the bottom to detect and display movement onto the screen.
Sony could call it a "Personal Computer", or a PC for short.

The CPU is not clocked at 1.6ghz. This was speculatory nonsense floating around before the systems were ever released. The SoC clocks the CPU cores based on remaining thermal margin, and their nominal clock ends up around 2ghz. They're capable of boosting to 2.4ghz, exactly like the top binned Beema parts we have on the market.
Never trust console kiddy sites for hardware information.
The cat core designs can't scale much higher than that anyway. Their entire backend would have to be redesigned, and its not worth the investment. Dropping in two Excavator modules would be the only viable solution.

If this is going to be a SoC the CPU has to be FinFET too, since a SoC means the GPU and CPU are literally on the same chip. Even if they use the old architecture moving to FinFET alone should help quite a bit with power consumption.
