how big is big enough?

Mid tower is big enough for most stuff.
I love the NZXT Phantom 430.
Really it depends on motherboard size support and compatibility for your components.

Full, no reason to artificially constrain space just to make things harder, my switch 810 is nice, except my next case is gonna be that fucking corsair cube thing so I can have more then a goddamn inch in the back of the case. My nas is mitx though, so it's not as obtrusive

very comfy with itx in a legacy u2. I could have gone even smaller with a pc-q02, but after dealing with it in person I decided to get something a tad larger to accommodate more components.

Mid tower is big enough for the majority of people.
>>54128108
Do it, mITX is the best
>>54128439
With an ATX motherboard you need a mid tower at the least, probably.
Unless you get something like the A05N or something that's kinda in-between mATX tower and mid tower.

fuck that case. I have a N200 mini tower and even for its size it was still easier to work with and no fear of it trying to take a fucking arm off.
>>
>>54128496
Fair enough. But if your build is at that price range, why not go for a fully modular psu?
>>
I don't use a case. Never saw the point in paying for a useless metal box.
>>
>>54127584
Used to have a mid-sized tower until I got a GTX 260. The Power outputs of the video card were basically touching my hard drive due to how little space there was in the case, so I got a full-sized tower and haven't thought of upgrading since.

Although I probably should upgrade due to a severe lack of USB 3.0 ports.

>>54128503
From what I'm seeing, I'm not liking any of the mids nor the below $100 full towers. Is the NZXT Phantom that good and worth the $108 pricetag? I'm really anxious about cases since almost everything below has its fair share of negative reviews and experiences, while this one has very little.

>>54128516
I want to keep it below $1200, if I can. I'm looking for power, but budget power if it makes sense. Hence my concern with the case being big enough or not (or good enough with air control), and what kind of card I should go for.

Doing research without understanding everything about the cards means all I see is shitflinging between Nvidia and AMD, so I'm completely at a loss. And this is months of looking and lurking around all over the net.
>>
>>54127584
The smallest non shit ATX case. I have a monster NZXT Switch 810 for when I was running a custom liquid loop. Thing had room for 60mm thick rads in the roof and floor, both in push pull configuration. But fully loaded with all parts and a fully topped off water loop, the thing had to weigh around 80lbs. Was a monster.

Currently have a Fractal R5. Couldn't be happier. My days of custom liquid and windowed cases is pretty much done.

Best budget ATX case BY FAR is the NZXT Source 210. Hands down one of the best budget tier cases I have ever worked with. Plain non 1337 GAYMER aesthetics but still packs all the stuff a gamer case would have. Extra clearance for tall coolers, rooms for long video cards, etc.

Have built inside them more than once for clients and none of them have ever complained.
>>
>>54128573
gimme a sec. I'll comb it over. Under $1200 for just the tower right?

No no, $1200 overall. For the entire thing.
>>
>>54128573
The NZXT cases are generally pretty ok.
Phanteks and Fractal make good stuff too.
If you see a case you like, look up professional reviews from bit-tech, anandtech, hardwarecanucks and the like.
The source 210 like >>54128581 mentioned is a case I've heard good things about.
And that other anon meant just the tower as in no monitor/keyboard/speakers/mouse/OS.
Tower meaning the whole computer, but just the computer.
>>
>>54128616
oh boy. Ok changing a few things...
>>
>>54128573
I dont know if youd like it, but check the Fractal Design Define S, it has enough space and no clutter to get in the way of airflow. Unless you plan on having more than 2 HDDs and 2 SSDs, I think it might fit your bill.
>>
>>54128404

>>
I'm getting this for my new build.

What does /g/ think of the 88R?
>>
>>54128649
Alright, I might go with that instead. That drops the price down to $811.36 roughly, which is nice.

Now my concern rests on the graphics card.

Budgeting sucks when you only make about $200 twice a month.
>>
>>54128646
Here. $200 left for peripherals. This build is pretty much better all around than what you posted. Most of your parts were WAY over-priced compared to faster counterparts. Like your RAM. 2x8gb of ddr4 2133 from kingston is the same price as 2x8gb of ddr4 2666mhz from Corsair.

Motherboard wasn't trash, but it was over-priced for what you get.

Cooler was mediocre at best. $10 more gets you the 212 EVO.

Video card is up to you. I have personally used power color and their cards are top notch. If you don't want AMD, you can get a 4gb gtx 960 for $200. Or 2gb for the same price as the r9 380 I included.

http://pcpartpicker.com/p/rft8RB
>>
>>54128747
The motherboard you chose isn't compatible with the case.

I don't get why I should pay the exact same price for a 100W difference when they're both Gold.

Won't 2GB cards stutter like fucking mad with games these days?

Why pay $20 more for the same size SSD?

The rest you offered I've mended on the list, but the questions above still stand.

Imo, the sweet spot for budget graphic cards is the R9 380/x. But if you're on a tight budget, why are you building a skylake build? You can save a bit if you go with a 4xxx series processor instead. I built pic related for 750 dollars, and I could've saved 50 dollars easily, but Im picky. Ignore the shit resolution, Im using my tv as a monitor for now.
>>
>>54129084
I plan on overclocking to get as much possible out of the build as I can for the price I have to pay. I heard the 6700K is very good for that, and whatever card I DO end up getting could hopefully get a very good amount of mileage from with the fans + plenty of airflow.

If I sound like a clueless fucking idiot please tell me so I can correct my ignorance.

I think I taped a few off and have them ona resistor wire too, to lessen the brightness.

I love how literally anyone builds on mid towers with 1 hard drive and a single gpu and they never upgrade lol.
Seriously buying anything bigger than mATX is retarded unless you are planning to install 3x cards. Even Itx cases have space for like 3 ssd and 1 hdd.
>>
>>54129303
>he ranks motherboards by the number of SATA ports and 16x slots

Yeah, for gamers nothing bigger than mATX makes a lot of sense, but you know which standard doesn't have any good cases? mATX.

There's simply more choice with ATX, both in motherboards and cases. Not only that, you can space GPUs out.
>>
>>54129383
Yeah but I only need one good case and I'm set, I don't care about case choices it just makes it harder to choose but eventually you can find one that suits you, I'm sure mid towers have their advantages but 90% of new builders or whatever don't use them.

I dont know much about overclocking since Ive never done it. I suggest you look for benchmarks about what you plan on using the computer for comparing skylake and haswell and make a decision from there. On the graphics card part, apparently Nvidia gimps their cards, but I'd take that with a grain of salt. Although, again, on your price range, the Sapphire R9 380 4GB is your best bet, /g/ and reviews Ive read recommend it.

Wait for the 01-e version. They made it atx psu compatible, meaning semi-passive cooling, and they removed the optical bay because who the fuck uses optical drives these days anyway. Surely what i will buy. Price is the same, so a natural winner there.

I'm going to miss last decades massive PCs, today you could build an ITX system that's as fast as the pictured computer. Even if you still wanted to build in such a large case, it would offer no benefit over say an mATX form factor since even two GPUs are overkill for most things. No one really needs as much expansion as ATX offers.

I'm using mid.
It's too spacey.

I'll definitely go with a smaller one next time, not sure how much smaller though.
I don't want to make compromises due to size, so I'll just get the smallest that will accommodate the new build and its potential upgrades without a single "but".
>>
>>54129812
I'd cushion the top and call it an ottoman. I doubt it affects the cooling too much if it doesn't have any vents on top.

Just bought a silverstone ps11b-q. The cable management is so-so as it doesn't come with fabric ties on the backside of the motherboard tray and the bevel is in the side of the case instead of where you rout the cables, so they inevitably stick right into the foam.

But it was $79au or something so I can just deal cause it's quiet and looks great.
