Other business laptops are also welcome in /tpg/ (e.g. Dell Latitude/Precision, HP EliteBook/ZBook).
----
If you're looking for purchase advice, READ THE BUYERS GUIDE FIRST. Then post, stating budget and requirements (e.g. size and performance).
Don't buy anything OTHER THAN T, X AND W/P SERIES if you want the Real ThinkPad Experience™

Recommended models:
T420 - 14", normal size
X220 - 12.5", lightweight
----
Why ThinkPad? (also applies to other business laptops)
>Used machines are plentiful and cheap.
>Excellent keyboards - tactile feel and quiet.
>Great durability: chassis uses a magnesium rollcage for structural integrity, with high quality plastic body panels.
>Utilitarian design: e.g. indicator LEDs, 7 row keyboard layout on older models.
>Docking stations that easily turns your laptop into a desktop.
>Easy to repair, upgrade and maintain thanks to readily available service manuals for every model. Spare parts are easy and cheap to obtain.
>The best trackpoint (that red thing in the middle of the keyboard). Great for those who type a lot or hate swiping their fingers all over a touchpad.
>Excellent GNU/Linux & *BSD support.

No, chinks are not the fault(thinkpads aren't even engineered in China), is a designers fault. David Hill said several times he wanted to slim down thinkpads. The problem to slim down thinkpads is that means to make some compromises in build quality.

Is it possible to get a 15" FHD thinkpad with 8GB RAM, good CPU and an SSD, for ~500 euro? Oh yeah, not bulky af. Main usage: office, matlab, old games, programming, etc.

I tried to entice my brother into trying them, but he wasn't interested, that faggot. My sister used a T60 that I personally picked for her when she needed a machine for her studies 6 years ago. She liked it. She later sold it to me for a hundred, when she upgraded to something never.

I personally own 3 at the moment: A T510, an X201 (posting with it now), and the aforementioned T60.

Hi friends. I have a stock T450s. Windows 10. Haven't done shit with it because I'm a normie with no free time. The Bluetooth suddenly doesn't work anymore- updating drivers doesn't help and it seems like the thing is having trouble getting power and keeping power based on how it flickers on and off in device manager. What a little fuck. All I wanted to do was use these neat earbuds I got as a present. Has anyone else experienced this? It's like the antenna doesn't even exist- the option for Bluetooth settings literally vanishes as well.

It's a great laptop otherwise. Well, I've had wireless issues too, but that doesn't happen anymore. I don't remember how I fixed those...

I'm sure I'll switch to a different OS one of these days. Surely.

Bought lenovo 11e for travelling, stable built, 8gb ram, ssd, 1.4kg, bout 700$, pretty cheap. hate tablets. Linux works fine, mousepad and keyboard a little lagging.

>>
Would a 2ghz pentium m be a noticeable improvement over a 1.7ghz one?

They're like 12$ on eBay and I might get one if it would make a t42 feel a bit faster.

Also, what's the best way to keep an ibm era thinkpad cool? It idles at 55c and I've already got new thermal paste in the mail, is there something like a really fast fan I could use?

Remove keyboard screws from the back, they have little keyboards next to them. Then push the keyboard forward and snap it out.

keep charge between 40-80% all the time, and then recalibrate once a month ish
recalibrate by discharging all the way to 0% (while plugged in, tlp on linux lets you do this) and then charging to 100% in one go

Stay plugged in even though you have a low power CPU, macshill
>>
>>54123591
Why is it important to keep it between 40% and 80%?

Also, if I'm working near a power outlet, why not just let it top off at 100% and leave it plugged in? Does the battery get worn out this way or does it know to stop charging when it's at 100%?
>>
>>54123647
Li-Ion batteries get fucked when they get to 0% or 100%, and 40-80% are the `golden range' to prevent damage. If you're at a power outlet, let it top out at 80% and then just pull the battery out, leaving it plugged in until you have to go. On top of that, keep the computer as cool as possible. Clean out the fans if it's a used laptop, and keep it off soft surfaces.
>>
>>54123710
>If you're at a power outlet, let it top out at 80% and then just pull the battery out, leaving it plugged in until you have to go.
On Thinkpads you can just use Lenovo Power Manager or TLP to set charge thresholds so you don't have to do that.

Yeah, you definitely should set the charge threshholds on TLP, but pulling the battery out keeps it away from the hot computer components, preventing heat damage. It's good practice even if not entirely necessary.

Holy shit m8. I tried this before and was pretty sad that my battery wasnt included. A slight chip on the batter stopped the latch from 'latching' meaning it wasnt a secure fit.

Just had the idea to go on ebay and see if anyone had posted clear pictures of serial numbers that I could try.

Holy shit, they did. I found a cheap <$20 listing for a 50% ish capacity battery and the Bar code went through and now I have myself a new Lenovo replacement coming.

I also purchased the listing off ebay as I would have felt like a real scumbag otherwise. I wont actually confirm payment until I have confirmation my replacement is coming. If I run into problems I'll see what else I can do.

So yesssss, cheap offical new Lenovo batteryssss. You are welcome!

(Also when you have submitted the RMA for the battery I double checked you cant do it again, and the number I sent off says 'this battery has already been proccessed' etc.)

TLDR: Go on ebay and look for pictures of barcodes people have posted.

Alright, guys, it's time. I want to get a thinkpad. I have been researching them for quite a while now, but I just can't make up my mind.

My desired specs are thus:
>1080p (native or relatively easy swap)
>16GB RAM
>recent-ish processor, second (preferably third) gen core-i or better
>at or around $400, but might be willing to go as high as $500 if it's really nice

What are my options? I like the feel of the X230 and the T420S, both of which I have had in my hands/repaired. I have the opportunity to get the 420S for about $200, but I feel that's too expensive for the condition it's in.

What should I do?

I don't know, but I'm guessing no since the touch part would be a separate cable, which the t420 wouldn't have a socket for
