Even in airplane mode the modem is in a passive state and will happily respond to any tracking requests. Removing the modem is the only way to not be tracked.
Technically the wifi-NIC could also have some firmware on it that regularly sends some data to a certain IP whenever it connects but that's easier to find out.

We've been able to stick MicroSD cards INSIDE our phones to add storage since forever. Now it can even be used as additional internal storage.

Androids have more features yes, but it's for a smartphone ffs. Most normal people use their smartphone for making calls, browsing net, and sending/recieving texts/emails, which iPhone does better
Android is better for many other things because extra features, but if you are someone who won't use them, there's no point going for it
For tablets Android is definately the way to go, but for phones, I would say both are almost on the same level, with advantages and disadvantages

Custom aosp-based roms provide the smoothest AND the most feature-rich user experience. Basically, you haven't seen Android if you haven't tried them. Not every app can use the same interface. I'd rather have an app that was designed to work to its full potential even if the interface isn't completely the same than one that looks pretty and is worthless.
