Thinly veiled guts thread?

Total after everything is probably pretty close to $3500. Paid in full at time of purchases. Originally only had 8gb RAM, 1HDD, 1 980, and a shitty 720p TV. I had all the money at the time originally, but didn't think to need it, thankfully I left myself options.

Won't be "upgrading" for a very long time. Eventually the case and most of its internals will be salvaged and used as a home server / NAS. Likewise I'll make my current server / NAS my primary gaymen PC.

Probably around $2.5k without peripherals.

Peripherals are a das model s with browns (~$100), a $5 WMO, a 10 year old dell monitor, a 5 year old samsung tn monitor (~$100).

I'll probably buy a real monitor eventually, rather spend my income on other things right now. I have no intention of upgrading anything else for years to come, with the exception of another hdd if necessary.

It's fine, doesn't overheat even playing games. It's always in my bed and if I move it there's definitely a warm spot but not super hot. I do alway have a fan blowing near it which helps but mostly have it as I prefer having a bed fan.

The airflow on it is silly though, intake and out flow are both on bottom so it sucks up its own hot air lol

Seeing how I've always wanted to build my own "dream machine" through buying high-end parts with my own "hard-earned" money, probably a good 6-7 years like my now-past system I built in 2010. I quote "hard-earned" because I'm still single, still live with my parents, but was raised to have a good work ethiic. So like any fucking normie I got a job as a RN and started making my own money that way.

Most likely when something's in dire need of an upgrade. Next on my schedule would be the CPU/Motherboard/RAM combo (e.g. skylake+DDR4), which I'm thinking might be come relevant if high-bitrate HEVC ever becomes pirateable.

They don't need more than 4 cores, but they benefit quite a bit from more than 4 cores. You can play most games on a GTX 560 ti, but you still see people having GTX 980s and 980tis. Maybe I want better, more stable framerate?
>but generally it's a couple of FPS
Regurgitating the same bullshit doesn't make it true. It's definitely more than a couple of fps which in itself doesn't mean anything. I'm talking about percentages and more cores and or threads will often give you 30-40%+ better performance in certain titles which is worth it, at least to me.

I would sell the second one and put Haswell-E and SSDs into the first one. SLI 970s are shit when you can get a 980Ti for the same performance.

get a lenovo thinkstation d30 motherboard and a pair of xeon e5-2687w's. get a pair of quadro 6000's. get a couple ssd's, adobe software can make good use of a 64gb scratch drive. get 64gb of oem ibm/lenovo ram for d30.

if you want more modern options and 10 bit, get a quadro m4000 rather than 6000 SLi. but the crunch will be slower.

For the past 10 years I've had a emachines prebuilt PC with an AMD Sempron 3100+, 512MB and an integrated nForce 6100, so I'm pretty sure I can last another 10 years with my current set up.

Built my rig back in like 2011. Still fucking with same i5 2500k @ 4.5GHz. And let me tell you I have been cooking the fucker the entire time.

Upgraded the gpu twice, we 960 now. Totally fine for my casual ass for the next 3 years or so.

RAM is 8GB of 1600. I should probably remedy this next.

Windows 7 but I will likely upgrade to 10 for the fps meme. It is just a Steam machine basically, I do all my real work, fapping etc on linux

Dunno, whenever I feel like a change

Case is a powermac g5 that I picked up for $30, better than the piece of shit case I had at the time so I gutted it and put some epoxy down for the standoffs, and cut a hole for the io shield. If I had to do it again I'd mount the mobo vertically and just run extension cords to the stock back panel, but I think it turned out alright. Only thing left to do is get the front usb port working (just gotta fix the wiring). Macbook pro on the left is for work, its a top end mid 2012 retina 15". Gotta get the screen fixed (its cracked) but when I do I'm going to be putting arch on it. GPU on top of the speaker on the left is a 780ti.

Always upgrading something or another, got an M.2 SSD recently when I upgraded the mobo, got a CPU cooler not long after I bought it, a better case some time later. In terms of major upgrades I'll probably update the GPU in a couple years time, CPU won't be upgraded for the forseeable future.

Add another $10 to the HDD and double its capacity.
Not sure how massive and expensive of a cooler you think you need on a 6700k, even on a heavy OC.
Nothing wrong with bronze, if you want modular and gold add $50 for the 500w version.
Not sure what kind of case you're looking at, but in general most people don't need to spend >$120 for a quality case, even at mITX.

Even with all those values maxed out its still a lot closer to $1000 than $1500. By all means show me this magical $1500 system based on 6700k and GTX 960. I know it's possible with certain things like the stupidly expensive mobos or more / higher capacity drives. But the point stands, quality can be had @ ~$1000 for those base specs. Take off another $100 because 90% of people don't need the 6700k over the 6600k anyway, especially not for medium level gaymen with a 960.

I just have them in SLI just because I can. Most games work fine in SLI, some cause stuttering even with the high frame rates. I have games running full-screen on one of the monitors (1440p with G-Sync, soon to be upgraded to a 4K with G-Sync) and it usually stays above the refresh rate of the monitor. It's not twice as strong as a single card, it's more like what three 970s with perfect scaling would be.

>>54109548
It's for LAN-parties or when the main battlestation is busy rendering videos. I rarely use it anymore. It was the first computer that I built for myself since I started really getting into computers. I'll probably use it as an HTPC at some point, but I'll need to replace it with a mini-gaming rig. I'll probably go with an i7-6700k and a Radeon DualPro or whatever the dual Fiji card is called.

Maybe I'll upgrade to zen, only for vga passthrough to run linux but still be able to game. The most demanding game I played is TW3 which ran 50-60fps on ultra at 1440p with my 290 OCed which looked fine at 96hz. Pretty good value, average of ~$200/year and been sliding every thing to max with 7 problems since I had it. I miss upgrading almost everything every two years.

Nice battlestation.
Just a word of advice: You could dual boot and use GAN00/l00NIX on the go.

GPU is just a placeholder until I can upgrade to Pascal (I'm going to give this one to my friend).

>Never because of reason below...

I got it about a year ago. I wanted a DDR4 computer. I also wanted just the best possible thing I could get so I didn't have to deal with issues anymore. Overboard? Yes, but that was the point. I got it because I wanted to get more hardcore into video games.

Then, I realized that video games are pointless and were going to seriously hurt my life more than they already have. Wasn't worth it. Took it too seriously and even when I didn't, it was just such a stupid waste of time that it didn't matter. Was just running from my problems, ironically making them worse. Not to mention the gaming community is terrible, but I suppose that's what you get when you place a bunch of socially awkward people in one place that focus on a virtual world that means nothing.

The community was starting to ruin me the more I got into it. I had a friend who quit a few years back and bought a motorcycle and he said his life became so much better after he left. I did the same a few months ago. Haven't played a game since January and never will.

Got a Mac. Life is good. Nice and comfy now. There's your autism for the day. I'm sure (You) can handle gaming and it's totally not a waste of time (which is what I told myself too...) and I'm sure you're right and that you can handle it (no you can't), but I couldn't.

A change of pace from the usual replies. (^:

~$700 initially (late 2012/early 2013)
home built from parts
- gigabyte 990FX UD3 mobo
- FX8350 CPU
- EVO 212 cooling block
- EVGA GTX 760
- 2x 8 GB GSkill Sniper 1866 DDR3
- 620 W Antec Bronze PSU
- WD black 750 GB HDD (system)
- 2 TB Toshiba HDD (storage)
- ASUS blu ray burner
- ASUS DVD burner
- noname generic case
- some fans
- couple other misc support items

2x monitors, Dell U2412M @ $220 each (cost in addition to $700 main system).

About $500 other support equipment (performance USB flash drives, external enclosures & several 2 TB HDDs, router, switch)

Keyboards, mice, USB hubs, speakers all scavanged from previous systems, almost all of which was free from somewhere else or another.

~$210 in upgrades in 3 years
- MSI GTX 960 (last month)
- 250 GB MX200 SSD (system) (January)

All paid in cash (via credit card online ... I don't buy anything that doesn't get paid off by the end of the month).

A few small upgrades will keep this system running strong for at least 5 years, such as 2nd & 3rd SSDs for multi-boot system and at least one 4 TB HDD for storage. So, another $180-$200 in the next 12 months.

Will then spec & price out new home built system in ~2020 or 2021. Can't say more because most of that tech hasn't been invented yet. Probably under $1000 budget, maybe as low as $500 ... I buy quality parts for long-term use.

Old system (current one described above) will get relegated to some sort of home server/firewall function until it breaks beyond repair, which might be 2025 or later.

AMD CPUs are shit, you're a retard if you are building an AM3+ machine right now. AM3+ hasn't changed since 2011, they are using 3rd party addon controllers for USB 3 and SATA because the chipset doesn't natively support half of modern shit.

Like I already told you, get a low end Intel CPU and a better graphics card.

If you aren't actually here for advice, go build your shitty computer and live with your shitty purchase.

Soon, hopefully. I want to snatch another 8gb ram but I'm waiting out to see if zen will offer a big performance upgrade over my current i5. If it does i'll get that and DDR4 instead.

Will also be getting one of the new Pascal cards when they release.

No clue, I don't need more power for work or media, and the only game that could make me upgrade is Bannerlord.

I've been making minor upgrades such as adding more storage drives and changing some case fans, but I think my next big upgrade will be a new case since I like mine, but it feels and looks cheap considering the components I have inside. Idk when that will end up being though. I'll likely just cave once I see a deal for a case I like.

Not for another 5 years or so, since i just built it earlier this year.

A good chunk of the cost was finding a motherboard that supported AMD-Vi and had enough sata ports for 5 2tb drives and 2 512gb SDD. I didn't want to get a pci/pcie sata controller because i was worried with 2 graphics cards and the tv card i had all my slots would be in use or blocked. I was right.
