I figured this would be a good place to ask this kind of question, with all these people who know their computer well.

What is the most thermally conductive metal i could get my hands on? I have an idea about replacing the heatsink in my T42 with something other than copper. Ive got multiple CNC machines at my disposal in a few weeks when the workload at work lightens up, and i have a program to make the heatsink itself. Just wondering what metal would be the best for it from you guys's personal experiences with cpu temps.

sheit that would be expensive

i wonder if it would actually be worth it to buy 10 oz of silver just to machine it into a heatsink for a 13 year old laptop.
>>
>>54105639
>10 oz of silver just to machine it into a heatsink for a 13 year old laptop.
Theoretically you can just melt it back down and remould it for your next CPU
>>
>>54102508
Imagine the mess if that overheats and blows.
>>
>>54105653
that i could, and that would be a good option for when the t42 is finally ready to die

No part of the PSU breaches 60 °C under any load scenario, and no fan breaches 800 RPM. Here's a picture of the transformer temperature under full load.

Enjoy your closed loop water coolers. :^)

you do realize that you are aiming that directly onto the outside of the venting grate. which is why the temp is 40C.
>>
>>54105726
That's retarded, take a train somewhere out of state and buy some. 10oz is not a lot. Can't you just order some scrap silver online and melt it down yourself?

I deal in antiques and i take all the scrap silver i collect over the year and melt it down into 5oz bars.
>>
>>54105726
Don't you think it's a better idea to try different heatsink designs from copper? I don't think just changing it to silver is going to make that much of an impact.
I haven't a clue about heatsink design, but there must be some resources you can find.

The point of this machine is to be as quiet as possible, not as cool as possible. If the former was the goal, it would be more than a tad silly to remove the PSU fan.

50 °C is furthermore a quite normal temperature for a transformer in an application like that. Their cooling ability is very limited due to their inability to couple well to the air surrounding them. The parts which should suffer the most in my set-up are the heat-sinked transistors and rectifiers, but their heat sinks are considerably cooler than the transformer - which is why I chose to use the transformer as an example, since I'm not a lying twat.

>>54106114
That is the temperature of the transformer, which is the hottest part as well as a part that's rated for well over 100 °C operating temperature. The capacitors, which are the most heat-sensitive devices never go far beyond 40 C, which lends them an operational specification of many tens of thousands of hours.

Good, that's roughly the look I was going for.

>>
>>54106225
It'll not read anything sensible at all, since the emissivity of your tubing and fluid is going to be very low. You basically need to read a solid, preferably opaque black surface.

I've been thinking of a 1440p monitor (60hz, I can't afford 1440p and 144hz and I rather higher resolution between the 2)

will a 290 run 1440p fine though?
