Earlier I booted it on USB via Linus Live Tool Creator and it worked, but then I messed up the install somehow ( I think when i wiped the USB instead of the Hard Drive)

why do you idiots place the taskbar at the top?
it's not a mobile device and its not a mac (global menu, etc). not to mention it ruins slamming the corner to close/window menu.

at least on unity it makes a bit of sense as they try a global menu approach but everywhere else is just a me too kneejerk reaction.

You ask an interesting question. It's a matter of habit where you like to have your task bar, and I would argue there's no real difference between having it at the top or bottom (or even at the side, like some people have it). But if you shouldn't have it at the top, for the reason you stated, why does Gnome have it at the top? They state usability tests as an influence on the design of Gnome Shell, and I believe there must be another reason for that decision.
The only reason I can think of is, that with the task bar at the top, you have both task bar and window title bar at the top. All the readable information is at the top. This must be the explanation for putting the title bar at the top.

gnome devs are idiots. the reason they want it there is that they try to pitch they shitty ui to mobile devices. why the fuck do you think they have a "weather app" or mobile copy/paste markers?

there is a bit of a difference. leave the top clean so now you can do stuff faster by not having to aim.
as before, to close just slam the mouse in the top right direction and click, the close button is always there, need to access window menu, top left. for the average mouse wiggler user this makes some things faster.

with the proliferation of widescreens you can start to argue for a left side default a la unity but for the love of god dont fail like they did with another bar at the top. they could easily have some more icons for the rest of the topbar items in the vertical taskbar. but they too started with some constraints -netbooks, see pic- and worked from them rather than think things through.

or do what i did when docks where the shit and keep all the tray/user shit in a right aligned docklet that is offseted to the left enough to leave the window buttons uncovered. that way you still have info at the top while keeping the corners clean. that idiot shuttleworth had some right ideas with the window indicators but evidently fucked it up. tho recently I saw they put menus in the title bar; maybe indicators will make a comeback...

>>54105844
There's a video on Computerphile that supports your argument very well. It discusses how there are various formulas regarding the placement of buttons, and being in the corners is the optimal placement because it effectively gives them infinite vertical and horizontal size.
You could simply move the title bar to the bottom to regain this effectively infinitely large (and thus very easy to press) button, but then you would find that your users are having to fight against their own muscle memory with no additional benefit.

>the reason they want it there is that they try to pitch they shitty ui to mobile devices

No. You haven't even thought this through or used GNOME. GNOME uses the two valuable infinite size corner hotspots for window management (left side) and device management (right side). Obviously the judgment was that these two actions are more common than closing windows. And I notice this is true in practice especially with GNOME's promotion of workspaces to a core UX component.

It's keyboard-driven. They've definitely taken touchscreen into account when designing the UI, but none of it gets in the way of keyboarding. Mousing leaves something to be desired but can be improved with a couple of extensions, which leads me to:

>draconic control
People are always forgetting the extension support. It's pretty much the straight opposite of draconic control.
