>Gizmo 5

>Gizmo5 (formerly known as Gizmo Project and SIPphone) was a Voice over IP communications network and a proprietary freeware soft phone for that network. On November 12, 2009, Google announced that it had acquired Gizmo5.[1] On March 4, 2011, Google announced that the service would be discontinued as of April 3, 2011.[2]

>The Gizmo5 network used open standards for call management, Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) and Extensible Messaging and Presence Protocol (XMPP).

>Gizmo Project was founded by Michael Robertson and his company SIPphone.[4]

>On November 12, 2009, Google announced that it had acquired Gizmo5[1] for a reported $30 million in cash. Prior to this acquisition, Gizmo5 had a working relationship with GrandCentral (now Google Voice) for years.[citation needed] Upon announcement, Gizmo5 suspended new signups until a Google relaunch.[5] Google was also dogfooding a Google Voice desktop client based on Gizmo5, branded as Gizmo5 by Google.[6]

>On April 3, 2011 Google shut down Gizmo5 and recommended users to use Google Talk instead.[7]

I think there's a few OTG type C flash drives, and some cables, but nothing worth bothering for yet.
Which is why I'm not upgrading yet.
That, and I wanna see what Zen does.
Also lower TDPs, pls.
If I can get a CPU that performs at least 15% better, and has a TDP of less than 40W I'll consider upgrading.

As it stands the Cryorig C7 I'm using on my 3570K @ 4.1GHz is doing fine, but it's louder than I'd like it to be.
A CPU with a signifigantly lower TDP than I have now should give me lower noise levels while keeping the same or slightly improved performance.

Sure it has some kind of charm, like those retro-futuristic cyberpunk stuff, but in practice, newer is almost always better.
Smartphones in their solid form are at their peak. It's a fucking mini PC. The you from 15-20 years ago would be crazy about that kind of technology.
MP3 players? Do you need a smartphone AND a player?
PCs? Do you want a slower machine?

He's exaggerating a bit, but it's true manufacturers began focusing on power efficiency instead of raw processing power. Build quality also went down because "muh thinness", DYEL numales/Appleshit emulation. It's been a step backward in many respects.

Older hardware is highly underrated for everyday tasks. /tpg/ for instance went thru a slump over the years it's coming out of - originally people lauded older models for a variety of legit reasons, then a newfag influx disregarded anything older than a couple of years, now anon opinions have gone back the other direction again.

Also, consider some people only have 1 computer. What you see as acceptable performance in a laptop for instance, varies with your use case. I'd say *most* people need a laptop for light mobile computing needs only and have a powerful desktop for serious work. Others (students and poorfags mostly, but some that simply value the efficiency of a single device) only have one computer and need something that can do double-duty as mobile shitposting and serious work.
>>
>>54076311
For the longest time, like until 2009, my only computer was a Gateway with a P4, a 20 gig HD, and 256 megs of ram. Topped off with a chunky 20 inch monitor.

I ran this computer out of a Jeep with an extension cord, due to lack of space. What I would do was pop the back seat off, then set it all the way back against the tailgate. This would be where I'd sit. I would then lower the front seats and the monitor would sit on the seat backs between the seats, with the keyboard also between the seats in front of the monitor. The tower would go on one of the seatbacks, and was where I'd put the mouse.

Shame I don't have a pic.

Christ it's hell being poor.

>this attitude seems kinda hipster to me.
There's nothing really trendy about old PC hardware unless it's used for retrogaming, and even then those types are almost always console/8-bit users.

I personally love old high-end gear because there's a lot of interesting shit to learn from it, the history is interesting, and the engineering and aesthetic is fascinating, just because it's old doesn't mean it isn't still the culmination of years of work of incredibly talented engineers and designers alike, or a piece of some of the most advanced, versatile and expensive technologies we as a species can develop.

It's also cheap as fuck and a good motivator to get you off your ass and start tinkering and experimenting to find ways to breathe new life into something everyone else tells you is useless.

>Smartphones in their solid form are at their peak. It's a fucking mini PC. The you from 15-20 years ago would be crazy about that kind of technology.
They're great internet browsing and "casual" use, but for other stuff, I don't really know, I don't find them enjoyable or powerful to use at all. Modern smartphone applications just feel toyish, touch interfaces and software keyboards that use half of your tiny screen are painful, filesystem access feels like an afterthought, the devices themselves are unexpandable and bland. Don't really want to go back to the old ways, but I don't really feel excited about the new ways either.

>PCs? Do you want a slower machine?
Speed isn't really everything in computing, though. And even then you don't really start to notice a lack of responsiveness until you go back to mid-'90s consumer hardware. Pretty much anything 1999+ runs like a dream if you know your limits, and I've only really felt limited for my own use case on 2005 and older hardware in media and JS-heavy sites.

Thanks for reading my blog.

Did you know you can get internal WLAN cards for these from old WRT54G routers? The first versions of the WRT54G used a mini-pci card which you can just remove and drop in the 600-series, though you'll also need to run some antennas into your screen or through the body.

iPhone 4S - a like the smaller size as it fits comfortably in my pocket. IOS never really changes, and I don't game or anything or care about my little pony icon packs so no use for Android. I also use it as sat nav and my tomtom cradle doesn't fit newer iPhones.

I'll probably keep it till it dies.

1st gen iPad mini - same thing just use it for ebay and web browsing in bed, and ordering groceries, so no need to replace it.

Smartphones: These things are not meant to do the same work as a PC. given it's thumb based interface and mostly keyboardless devices, it's just not possible. It's cool. but even 15-20 years ago, the fact that it's cool will always rival against it's usefulness and speed.

>MP3 Players?
It's like you hate not affecting your phones storage and battery for your shitty /mu/sic collection.

>PCs
Older machines just did things differently, same as the smart phone. Your current PC does so much shit you don't know about, and it's power is diverted to there. Say you were in 90s DOS, and you had DOOM. DOOM was the ONLY thing that ran (aside from some drivers - Usually Mouse Driver and Maybe a sound driver) so your CPU was only worried about a small selection of things and the multitasking happened rather quickly on it. (Not to mention the increased use of Interpreters and hundreds of background services in modern OSes)

Also some programs have features and quirks that aren't in the modern day software. or people have a workflow that use old PCs.

Theres reasons for shit. Unless you're a collector, everyone will tell you theres a reason beside "just because"

Who here still uses a Zune HD?

I still keep my (now pretty outdated) music library on the zune desktop client on W7 so that I can sync it to my zune.

I don't know if it's because I'm getting older (26 here) or what, but I just can't be bothered to give a shit about streaming music services, or music on my phone in general. My library is also on google music, but the upload process is such a fucking piece of shit and if metadata gets fucked up during the upload, you're basically fucked because getting songs to reupload is impossible.

I keep my metadata immaculate in my Zune library. The only problem is that I gave up the search for 'free' online music because the quality is shit 99% of the time and now the only time I get new music is when I buy it.

This means I have turned into the worst of all plebes, most of my music listening is done on youtube while I play games.

Went to computer store (shall remain nameless) few days ago to get some upgrades on the computer my Dad bought from them 15 years ago. Thing was getting slow and the salesman had given a coupon to upgrade the ram to the maximum 512MB, add a CD drive as I am running out of floppy disks and gave the promise of helpful support for as long as we owned it. Asked how much it would be to do the work I had listed. I had considered doing it myself but didn't want to hunt down compatible parts and such as I couldn't find any info on it.

At first they asked where i got such a strange looking computer. When I told them I got it from there they denied it and things slowly escalated till I got to talk with the manager. Everyone swore they knew the companies entire product line and that that computer was not part of it. Eventually they showed me a list of all their products in an effort to prove it was not something they sold, as they didn't want to help. When I could not find it they felt vindicated till I told them their archive was incomplete and only went back 10 years.

At which someone asked how old it was. I told them and they all basically threw their hands up in defeat and told me that while it may have been their product they could not help me at all. Next time I think I might buy a bigger brand name like a Dell, hear they have good customer support. Anyway I don't plan to shop there again given how much trouble they gave me about this. They wouldn't even honor their coupon for the RAM upgrade, which had not expiration date. Said they didn't carry the dual 256MB RAM cards kits anymore, and I don't want to just fill the second slot with just any RAM card, got to be a kit.

Given how much I have learned in those years I am really tempted, but am really busy at work right now so it is more a made of convenience. If things slow down I will probably do it, more so given how every manufacture seems to mess things up or the few that don't charge an arm and a leg to basically not sabotage things.

>>54085988
Why not, if I doubled my RAM it would fix the memory issues and if I got the CD drive with write abilities then I would not have to be so thoughtful of my dwindling floppy disk supply, which is nearly depleted. So if I got those upgrades it should last me much longer for less than buying a new one that has lots of newfangled features I would never use.

I mean look at graphic cards, my computer had displayed great black and green graphics just fine for nearly as long I have been using a computer. In fact the monitor I use is from the prior computer. And don't tell me I need it to play games, organ trail still, works fine without it.

Well, given the requirement of XP is 64MB of RAM, if course it's going to run, but even at 128MB it won't be in top form. I pulled that thing out of the shed in the back yard and revived it despite it being exposed to the elements for years.

But props for getting that thing to run on the modern web. Your HDD getting fisted is likely the SWAP usage spiking after running out of RAM.

Very hard to know the difference and there may be some here, but you're not looking for hipsters, you're looking for luddites. Hipsters pretend to "use" old tech because they think it makes them unique. Luddites "use" old tech because they are absolutely scared to death of anything new, and ironically in their high school days spent most of their time trying to "educate" old teachers on how to use computers and after graduation, freaked the fuck out and made up dates when "everything went to shit" and this is their excuse on how they give up and can't try anymore.

This particular variation of luddite thread started about a month ago was fine at first because there were things posted like "I use a 2010 smartphone and it still works for me" and has gone right back to luddite threads of olde wherein there's people in here that are unironically complaining that the internet doesn't work on their single core Pentium IV from 2003, and is therefore shit now.

>The you from 15-20 years ago would be crazy about that kind of technology.
You're logically right, but the piece that you're missing is that during those 15 years they have been conditioning themselves be the new bitter unreachable old people. The next 15-20 year period will be nostalgia circlejerking of re-posting the same picture they took two decades ago of a PC that's turned off because it didn't even work then let alone now.

The other fun thing to look out for is if a hipster does indeed show up and mentions his age, to see the conversation go from "another like minded friend!" to "...you're not in my made up age group, kid" is also fucking hilarious to watch. Also be on the look out for 90s and 80s shits mingling, I've actually seen it come to the point where they say "my made up nostalgia is better than your made up nostalgia".

>if a car manufacturer will even respond to a 15 year old car...

Uh, yeah they will. They are obligated to carry parts for 10 years after the manufacture date. Then you have Autozone / NAPA / O'Reilly's / Advance, etc.... for aftermarket parts. I took my '98 in a little while ago because the seat belt broke and they fixed it for free. Also, his "computer store" is full of faggots if they didn't have these cheap ass commonly available parts around.

That's all I need. WIth Sublime I could do 90% of the tasks I need of a computer, mainly thanks to the Orgmode plugin.

Still using a computer I built in 2009 as my main computer. Was planning on building a new computer late last year when FO4 came around, but that ended up being shit and now it appears Bethesda might try to push payed mods again so I never bothered. Still looking at doing a cute mini-ITX build but can't seem to actually build up the will to do it because my current desktop still does everything I've wanted it to do and I don't have to worry about the ridiculous Intel ME/AMD PSP bullshit. Maybe AMD will surprise everyone and take the PSP shit out/make it open source for when Zen comes out (yes, I know that will never happen).

You can get refurbed clip+ on ebay for $35, very happy with mine. It looks and feels brand new, only giveaway is the "REFURB" stamp on the very bottom surface, which I don't mind since I don't look at that surface during normal operation.

I bought the one, was satisfied, then bought another so I have a spare. There will come a day when even the refurbs will run out (or the price will spike higher and higher from amazon jews), so it's good to be prepared.

Ruizu X02 is half as good for half the price, so it's worth considering.

That's the thing, smartphones ARE powerful, it's just that they're gimped by garbage OSes. Hell, the processor in the newest Samsung Galaxy S6 benchmarks the same as the processor in my seven year old desktop and it has 3 GB of RAM. A smartphone with a physical keyboard with a trackpoint and an OS that wasn't shit would kick ass, and could probably run Crysis well if it used one of the newer Intel Atom processors instead of an ARM processor.

There's no data or sources on that graph to learn the nature of this "security" either or how it relates to "stagefright"

The dimensions as it relates to phones doesn't make sense either, as flip/slidephones have an open/closed state to measure. Perhaps he means screen dimension?

At least he's passionate about his unsourced, mysterious bullshit.

Maybe barebones debian+icewm? He'd have to be careful with what he uses, but he wouldn't be as limited in software choices as he'd be in Puppy.
Dunno, I've just never seen Puppy as a "real" daily use OS. More of a nice thing to have in a live flash drive in case your linux partition is fucked up.

How limited are you on hard drive space? I had an old ~2001 laptop with similar specs that I put Archbang on, but from messing around with other distros it appears that it uses just as much RAM as a minimal install of Debian when neither are running a DE/WM. Just use a lighweight WM and the linux distro of your choice and you should be good.
>>
>>54090973
it's been awhile so I'm not sure about the no partition thing, but I do know that if you just use the live boot, the first time you shut down it has an option for a save file which basically gives it persistence and when booting up it loads to ram instead of relying on drive speed

Lubuntu will probably work, though I've never ran it on something quite so low end. Works fine on Atom N270, 512 MB RAM netbooks, not sure how the CPU compares to what you've got. Lubuntu is a "fully featured" OS etc, and it doesn't have the huge gaping butthole vulnerabilities of Win 2k if you're thinking about connecting it to the internet.

Puppy Linux is designed for absolute toasters, but takes a serious hit to usability, normie-computer-ness as compared with Lubuntu (Lub ships with firefox and has access to the expansive Ubuntu repos).

You could also go balls deep into the memes and do a minimal install of pretty much any distro and use i3 if you want a l33t haxxor machine that's really only useful for posting in desktop threads.

Honestly with that piece of shit I'd probably just get an old style, parallel port gamepad and put Win 95 on it as an airgapped retro gaming machine for DOOM, Tie Fighter etc.

Do you have a graphics card in it?
