>Parents work for wagecuck pharma empire
>Fucking hate everyone in that company but the IT guys cause they're chill
>All employees use thinkpads, just upgraded to T460S's
>Walls of barely used T450S's
>Need to get a new laptop
>Ask head IT bro if I could buy a used one from them
>"Sorry man I can't turn over used equipment it's against company code"

Why the fuck do companies do this? They have like $20 grand in thinkpads literally doing nothing yet won't sell one to a broke student even if they take out the hard drive.
>>
because everything is a liability nowadays.
>>
>>54074813
because you could use data recovery tools to gain vital access to passwords and company secrets.
>>
>>54074831
this, especially pharma. all the liberals are out for blood trying to get "muh money" and figure out why "muh obamacare" isn't working quite right.
>>
>>54074858
hmm I'm pretty sure that isn't the reason anonymous
>>
Really? I just took an X61+dock from my company (a multinational electronics company) last week from the other IT guys who were going to toss it.

Battery is completely dead and hard drive was encrypted but whatever.

Obviously you aren't supposed to just give away new equipment but if that shit is headed to the dumpster then it's free game.
>>
>>54074813
aproach a company with less money and weaker beliefs
>>
>>54074950
This. Ask the IT guys what they're doing with them, and "intercept" them from a dumpster.
The data is no longer confidential once it's in the trash, it's in the public domain.
>>
>>54075105
If they care about those computers, it is likely they will get it to a secure computer disposal/recycler [sic] so they can get certificates of destruction which are required for compliance.
>>
They usually end up paying an e-waste company to get rid of them, and the e-waste company destroys the hard drives and sells the remainder on eBay.
>>
Get a job, you fucking loser.
>>
>>54074950
That company's policy on hardware disposal is different to op.
>>
>>54075105
>this
could work but i generally remove cpu+ram+hdd from any machines i throw out
>>
>>54075105
op here:
is there any law protecting or proving this wrong in the US?
>>
>asking about it instead of just yanking one before they're all thrown away
dumbass
>>
>>54075351

dont dumpster dive during daylight. Most corps lock their electronic waste for collect, or , if cheap, destroy Themistocles, for pick up of smashed components only.
>>
>>54075418
*destroy themselves
>>
>>54075418
I wouldn't dumpster dive, just get one off the dude I know once they go to throw them out before it hits the trash. Is that theft?
>>
>>54074853
They could just have the hard drive destroyed
>>
>>54074813
How do you make pancakes like this?
>>
>>54075440
out of site, out of mind. Ignorance is bliss. No witness, no human victim, no crime.
>>
>>54075493

>>
>>54075817
this is genius
>>
>>54075469
The average person doesn't know how to do that, so it's easier to just put a blanket company wide policy of no selling. Especially for people who don't have the authority to sell and want to make a buck.

At the end of the day even if they let th IT team do it, they would have to manage the full sale and ensure it's don'e legally, receipts are handed and all the nonsense + they would have to use up IT time to sell laptops rather than use them for what they were hired for.
>>
>>54074813
ITT: thinkpad fags talk about dumpster diving

Why am I not surprised
>>
Eli Lilly? When I worked there they used HP, though.
>>
i started with some friends a hardware club and we are trying to expose all the money that our uni is throwing away from herself and the feds (it is a public university)

so, basically they MUST report everything they throw away or breaks. and that include computers.
but they cant put in trash, there's a procedure of wiping all data and them calling a auction to anyone interested in buying as scrap metal. (there's A LOT of still functional shit. even fucking high-end nvidia quadros and full servers)

to avoid all this, they just call an NGO to pick it up and melt for free (reclycle)

i tried taking it b4 the trucks appear and they called it as a robbery, now i try to take diretaly with professors

my point is, the isntitution dont give a single fuck about why you want their trash. even is to hide something or just because they dont wanna their data leaikng. it's just to keep the economical wheel running and also to call more money to replace their machines.
>>
>>54074813
Do you realize there's more to it that just giving it to you? The hassle they would have with bureaucracy would probably cost them more that you would be willing to pay.
>>
They're already cheap as balls for exactly the reason you describe. Just because you didn't get one for free doesn't mean they're useless.
>>
I work for Novartis since they bought my company from Nestle. We still have hundreds of T410's in users' hands, along with T420's and T430's. T450's are just starting to show up. Cheap bastards...when my company's in-house management called the shots, we'd get new Dell Latitudes every time a new model came out.
>>
>>54074813
You can thank the secops stooges for that.

Go find a company that has little or no secops. For instance my company has 1 secops guy and I just gave away all our old T420s laptops(minus the disk).
>>
>>54074813
>those pancakes
THICC
>>
>>54075931
Exactly, it would cost more to sell them than to give them away or pay to have them destroyed.
>>
>>54077748
I wish I had eaten them.

They'd have to take out the hard drive and grind it into fine powder then the ram too for good measure because if anyone got any data about anything they could get fucked
>>
>>54074813
>Why the fuck do companies do this?

Because this isn't how accounting works. Depending on your state and county, there could be permits they need to sell computers, etc, etc.

There's more red tape than handing over 50 bucks and getting a laptop.
>>
>>54077791
not every business is being chased by the NSA, stupid animeposter. a DBAN is more than enough to hide corporate secrets. They wouldn't even do that much, honestly.
>>
>>54074813
>pharmacy
Those laptops are being destroyed.

The laptops we refreshed where all donated. All 4000 of them. But I work corporate retail.
>>
>>54074813
I am high as giraffe pussy and that looks so delicious I'm at half wood just looking at it
>>
>>54077808
continuing question of why does a government who is supposed to make citizens lives easier do this. also, fuck the government, just sell the computers anyway internally to employees, thats what i did 10 years ago with my employer and about 60 computers. sold them all for ~$50 and bought new shit for the IT dept
>>
>>54077999
because they are incompetent.
>>
>>54077999
If they didn't make businesses declare all their assets, it could be a good tool for tax avoidance. You know how much businesses hate taxes.
>>
>>54077922
>But I work corporate retail.
what does a pharmacy have to hide anyways

they forgot to count narcs or something?
>>
>>54075135
>If they care about those computers, it is likely they will get it to a secure computer disposal/recycler [sic] so they can get certificates of destruction which are required for compliance.
This. Also, the trusted recycler thing is for making sure the thing is recycled too. How do they know what you will do with the laptop once it's reached end of life? This way, they know it's disposed of properly.

AFAIK, this isn't new.

That's not a rice cooker shape. That's a pancake you would put in a cake mold and shove in the oven.
>>
>>54078097
>so they can get certificates of destruction which are required for compliance.
right, i forgot about patient confidentiality. I was only thinking about patents or whatever.
>>
>>54078676
if it was in a cake mold it would have cooked the sides of it as well

It's amazing that /g/ will make threads asking how to properly format their drives so that they can give it to their grandmother without fearing that said grandmother will uncover their cheese pizza collections, but in the same breath express surprise that a big pharmaceutical company has a policy against selling basically new laptops.

do you guys ever finish a thought process or are you just leaping from one retarded thought to the next?
>>
>>54074813
it's a private property and can be used in whatever way they want
and you're a socialist trash who should be brutally penetrated by president Trump
>>
>>54080286
Probably the understanding that the hard drives is where the data is actually stored.
Destroy the hard drives and the data is gone, there's no residual lying around in the rest of the computer.

You want to throw the baby out with the bathwater.
>>
>>54080286
"A bunch of people leaping from one retarded thought to the next" would make a pretty good description of ~90% of the threads on /g/.
>>
>>54074879
>>54074813
Because HIPA and also lawsuits. Dumb fuck.
>>
ask if they want to sell it to you without the HDD or just steal it.
>>
>>54074813
What an idiot.

Well maybe you will get lucky and they will throw one in the bin and you can rummage through it and get one for free like the freetards I see going through Tesco bins looking for food.
