I don't know why the US wants to outlaw backdoorless encryption.

It's like they actually want companies rely on their IP to go bankrupt when Chinese and/or Russian hackers crack their weak encryption and sell their industry secrets to the highest bidder.

Politicians globally fail to realise that encryption protects their online banking amd general transactions. They will stay ignorant until they're on the receiving end of consequences.

My favourite example is that of air ambulances in the republic of Ireland. An extra one was deemed an unnecessary expense until a politician had a child that missed out on a kidney transplant because the only helicopter was out rescuing someone else. All of a sudden getting another one became a priority.

We don't know what will happen yet because it's not $15/hour over there yet.
However, talking to a friend who owns a small business (a bike shop on the outskirt of Seattle), he says that his business either has to let go of half his employees (which is 3) or possibly all of them to find people who are willing to work full-time once the minimum wage does go up. He showed me his financials and he's barely keeping the business afloat as it is with 5 additional employees, which he needs because they all work part-time shifts since he's the only person working there full-time. If he can convince 2-3 of them to go full-time with just over the new minimum wage (I think he set $18/hour as the base wage), then he can let go of three part-timers and be about $1.5k over his current expenditures. But there is a very good chance that none of them will bite because they're all in college or working another job, so he's probably going to have to phase those employees out paying them $15/hour AND hire new people at the same time to ensure his business can stay afloat, putting him more into the red.

I'm all for raising wages for hard-working people, but there needs to be a realistic approach to this. A job market is still a market, after all. You have to add value to yourself as a employee in order to be paid more. If you can do the job of two part-time, unskilled workers, then you deserve a raise which ends up saving your business money for not having to provide healthcare and benefits for an additional person. By kicking up the minimum wage, there will be the unintended consequence of job losses in the short-term, since businesses have to adjust their employees to stay in the green. That will drive up unemployment, which puts added pressure on the job market since you now have more jobless bumblefucks competing for the same positions of which there used to be more of before the minimum wage raise.

The idea is that minimum wages, or wages in general haven't gone up with inflation or productivity in the past few decades.

I honestly don't know if that's true or not.
>>
>>54077065
Depends on which sector you look at. Minimum wages are, broadly, comparable to what they were decades ago, after you adjust for inflation. High-skilled positions pay way more than they used to, there's a big premium on the very very best. What happened in between those two extremes is that average wages came down because of automation and competition. In the 60s every office had a bunch of file clerks, now your computer does all that. Auto manufacturers stopped building in Detroit where the UAW was strong and demanded high wages and went to the southern right-to-work states.

Outsourcing contributed to it too - there's several billion people in this world that are happy to work for a fraction of any US minimum wage - but make no mistake about it, the above factors would have led us to the same place even if Trump and Sanders had ripped up the free-trade deals twenty years ago. You just don't need ten thousand people to run a factory anymore. You can run a factory that way, if ten thousand Chinese workers are cheaper than the industrial automation to do their work, but if labor is more expensive like it is in the US, you can now substitute capital for it and fill the same factory with robots and run it with 100 people.

Back on topic, Feinstein is just one of those types, common in government, that really, really, REALLY hate the idea that there's something, anything, that they don't or can't control. Their presence is why every government grows more authoritarian over time. The cynical examples of these are actually less harmful - they want power for power's sake and will bend on other issues so long as they retain that power. Feinstein is one of the truly malignant ones, the "well-intentioned" people who think they know better than anyone else how people need to live their lives, and want power to enforce that. There's no compromising with those. They want you to have no right to do anything they disapprove of.

>Minimum wages are, broadly, comparable to what they were decades ago, after you adjust for inflation
wages as a percentage of GDP have been in decline for decades and we are now paid the least we ever have for the amount of work we do. The minimum wage has barely changed for low income workers but has increased by several orders of magnitude for executives. The only countries who see any change in minimum wages use collective bargaining by trade unions. The union movement is not considered relevant by many young people today, so workers are being treated worse than ever.
>>
>>54077740
Twitter banning "hate speech" is no more of a restriction of free speech than you refusing to let your neighbors use your computer to shitpost on Facebook is
>>
>>54077913
most people rightly care more about what their wages will buy (which is measured by the inflation rate and CPI) than about labor's share of GDP.

Also bear in mind that the unions have kind of shot themselves in the foot appealing to young people. The unions want to protect seniority and job security, which favors the old at the young's expense. (since the old have jobs and seniority and the young don't)

I have no idea how widespread a phenomenon this is, but I know a fellow my age (mid-20s) who worked at a union store. The people the union protected were the deadbeats and screwups. Those people were always calling their union rep to protest some demerit or another, and grew really close to the union folks as a result. The guys who worked hard, showed up on time, and didn't have management on their ass as a result, the union didn't really bother with. The result was a kind of adverse selection, the people the union stuck up for were the good-for-nothings. My friend quit because he was sick of always picking up the slack for them.

>>54077973
Twitter has the right to do that, they are a private company, not a government entity. I'd argue that they shouldn't though. The more you moderate, the less you can claim that you're just a dumb pipe who shouldn't be responsible for what your users post, which leads ever in the direction of tighter and tighter restrictions. They may want that anyway to appeal to advertisers, who would like it if there's nothing controversial at all, just feel-good, brand-friendly content, but that makes your communication platform boring and generic, and people will move away from it as a result. See also, Facebook, where this is happening as more and more people self-moderate because their bosses, grandmothers, and everyone else is on Facebook, and everything is tied to your real identity.

I remember an article about a fast-food chain that trialed using a call center in india to take drive through orders and type them in, where they'd show up on a screen inside the restaurant. Idea being to allow them to carry less US labor. Apparently it worked and did save money, but the hassle of working with the foreign outsourcing company and complaints about the call-takers being hard to understand (shitty drive through with that Indian accent on top of it) led them to scrap it.

And anyway there's still tens of millions of jobs left that are gonna be on the chopping block not because of Pajeet, but because of automation.
